Poll "If it's not fun, why bother?" Are games still fun, SW? (76 votes)

Yes, games are still fun. 71%
The industry could do better. 29%

What do you think, SW? Do games today still follow this general philosophy, or are too many developers focused on other things? Sometimes I think the industry gets caught up on following trends or graphics or other things instead of the plain old philosophy of fun.

Blame bias reviewers and forum posters since they discourage the making of purely FUN games..

.. by scoring them a 5.0 because not enough feels and movie segments, lol :P

Plenty of fun games are being made, but there's lots of dodging you have to do these days. It's mainly Nintendo and indie developers today who build their games upon the concept of fun.

Stay away from soulless crap like Destiny, Anthem, The Division, whatever BR game, games that are designed to make you progress slowly in order to milk you out of as much money as possible. These games are as well built up upon very repetitive tasks to do, since that's both faster and cheaper for the dev than making a good game.

I haven't touched my PS4 in about three weeks. I started KH3 but haven't really played it. I've been playing Diablo 3 on my Switch. I haven't really had a "fun" game to play since last year. I'm hoping Division 2 will change that.

Games are more enjoyable than before, one reason is because of the multiplayer and add ons. My opinion.

There are still some fun games out there, mostly from Nintendo and the indie scene. Overall though, I think too many AAA developers nowadays are too concerned with things like cinematics, story, making the game more realistic, and making the game longer via unnecessary padding rather than just making the gameplay fun which should be by far the most important thing.

Compared to the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s; games overall are not as fun as they used to be.

The majority of mainstream games today are too easy to be fun and I tend to get bored of them very easily, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a good example of this. These games don't really try anything new any more they just copy what worked to sell other games. Nothing makes me excited for a new console anymore. Gaming has never been this bad IMO.

Hell yeah they're still fun.

My problem is I play too much, so I get bored. That's not the game's fault, though.

If it's not fun for me I don't bother with the games anymore. I still hold that finishing Jak 2 was my breaking point, now if I'm not finding enjoyment in the first couple hours I bail.

That said, I believe there are other reasons to game than "fun." The experience of a game, either through online competitive progression or through experiencing a story or world, are valid reasons for playing. Just depends.

I'm finding that I really don't have time to play games as much lately. I would probably try to find more time to play if there were more co-op games.

There's fun to be had. I do find certain games/developers focus too much on other things which can get in the way

Spiderman is a great example. I want to play as Spiderman, not Mary Jane or Miles or (civilian) Peter Parker. Almost all of that stuff could've and should've been (short) cutscenes.

You have to pick the right console. Xbox One has great shooters and racers - typically considered fun. Nintendo has the platformers and party games - fun stuff. The playstation brand specializes in movie games and jrpgs - busy work, button mashers, and calculation heavy - generally considered not fun.

This is why I'm finding myself playing more Indies and enjoying my Switch a lot... I sort of started to become bored with the same old games you find on the other consoles (games with heaps of cutscenes and ever-expanding open world games filled with fetch-quests). I felt like I was just going through the motions.

The perfect example is RDR 2. It's a great game that I really enjoyed and put a lot of hours into. But when I thought about it, I got just as much enjoyment out of playing a 2/3 hour game like Inside, than I did playing 60+ hours in RDR2. And since then I've been playing Mario Odyssey, which has straight away become my game of then gen.

@Sevenizz:

That is the most biased fanboy drivel in this thread. Funny thing is, the "real world" doesn't take most of your points into consideration because going by your post, the ps offers the least amount of fun. I guess the public must've missed that memo.

I still have tons of fun with competitive games. Story driven games on the other hand, I can't stand any of them anymore. I've pretty much gotten to the point that if a game has cutscenes, I'm not playing it

Games are fun because more of them are available to suit the interests of the gamer... I would be hard pressed to find another human being who has been playing this hobby for decades not totally malaised by the having to play another 3rd person open world game, or another FPS.... Games are still "fun" but that bares no weight as to whether games are becoming fatiguing to play... Many of them are.

@ermacness: You’re right. Naughty Dog and Atlus (Uncharted and Presona) make games exclusively for Xbox, 343i and Turn 10 (Halo and Forza) make Switch titles, and Nintendo (Mario and Zelda) make multiplats.

My apologies.

Now if you’ll excuse me, Superman is at the door selling Girl Scout cookies...again

Preach on Mario? Huh? Odyssey was pretty good.... But it didn't reinvent platformers or anything. It's just really well done.

Zelda is exceptional. There hasn't been a good mass effect game since ME3 and I have no hope for another in its current clutches.

Ollie Ollie is better than every Uncharted game ever made and its not even close....

I will absolutely preach the games I like, and acknowledge when its getting tired.

More recently I've been finally playing through God of War... I really expected it to be a let down, but I was wrong. The game is heavy on gameplay and cares enough for its narrative and characters where I'm pretty well invested. It's a great action game that takes the genre to a higher level. It's the exception to the rule.

But your skill is what's being showcased and you're rewarded for your performance. In single player games, arbitrary things like skill points and unlocks determine your level of performance. That is a waste and an insult to my free time. Where as if I win a game of PUBG, Fortnite or Apex, it's because of my skills and strategy. There is no sense of accomplishment like it. And it sure as hell beats fighting some QTE boss and then watching a 7 minute cutscene.

I can't watch the video because embedded ones doesn't currently work with Chrome, but if it's a video from Nintendo, I can safely assume that they're presumptuously and arrogantly believing they can define and hold some magical monopoly of what constitutes "fun" (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Nintendo's always going to be Nintendo.....thinking they're so superior in their design philosophy to everyone else, which is a load of utter garbage. They excel at what they do, but it's not somehow objectively superior.

A game is fun to me when it's engaging and stimulating, and that encompasses all games. Movie games, mechanic based games, strategy games, simulation games, everything. If it engages me, it's fun.

I have fun when I accomplish challenges and use what I earn in the process to accomplish tougher challenges. This is how I have been having fun in video games since the late eighties. Added bonus for me when enemies bleed numbers, turns me on.

You know I've been asking myself for a while if games are still fun. The answer is no not for me. The kind of games I enjoy are getting fewer and further between. I don't like many new games anymore. My main dissatisfaction lies with everything to do with connecting my systems online. I don't like playing online I don't like day one patches or broken launch games I don't like DLC or micro transactions. I just want to kick back in my chair and enjoy an old school game experience without being gated off from content. The shit has even invaded single player games. If you don't pay up they make the game a grind. I'm sick of it all. Been debating whether or not I should just quit. I have other hobbies like fishing hunting going to the casino or bar.

It's still my biggest pastime for a reason. Even though i've tapered off over the last few years, I still really enjoy gaming, and I don't think games have become less fun. It all depends on where you look.
