how to do kenny's calculations...

1.find when the ps3 sold the most world wide....now multiply that number and assume it will happen continuesly for the rest of the year.

2.put 360 sales at 0 and make out they will sell nothing in that same time perioid.

I said, they were selling about the same at my shop. But what do you think is going to sell more £100 arcade with forza 3, lips and scene it or a 250 quid ps3 with one game bundled ?

reggy72

Well going by Chart track and GFK, the PS3 is about even or past the 360 in Europe. And since the 360 came out nearly a year and a half before the PS3, it's pretty easy to see who has been outselling who.

So i guess the "250 quid ps3 with one game bundled"

Link 1, Link 2.

I think your going by sony's PAL region figures which also included Austrialia/New Zealand and large parts of Asia, whereas Microsofts PALfigures are pretty much based on western Europe

These aren't Sony's numbers, "going by Chart track and GFK".

Your calculations aren't, but it will happen eventually. Even then, what's going to happen? What are cows going to get more annoying and abrasive than they already are, all the while ignoring the repeated bashing the Wii is dealing both consoles?

Well ive been doing some reasearch. The last Media Create hardware sales for the first week in Jan has PS3 selling 68,000 consoles and the 360 only selling 4,000 consoles. So the PS3 is outselling the 360 by 240,000 consoles in Japan... In EU and PAL the PS3 is outselling the 360 by approx 300k consoles a month and here in the US a average of 65,000 consoles.

So to add that up you get 556,000 the PS3 is outselling the 360 by Worldwide on a monthly basis. So 556,000 X 11 months is 6,116,000 units over the 360, right now the 360 has a 5.6 million lead, so by Dec 2010 if my calculations are correct the PS3 will have oficially overtaken the 360 and be ahead by 516,000 consoles..

Again keep in mind im using hard numbers to back up my case. Now ofcourse i realize some months maybe higher or lower than others, but keep in mind this is a average i calculated.

what if natal is a hit and is bundled with 360s? would that be like sonys worst nightmare? but it don't matter to me I don't get anything out of it, 360 and ps3 have adequate 3rd party support so......

Well ps3 did do better in December. Also most ppl who would have wanted a 360 would have already gotten one where as ps3 was to expensive for many ppl before.

cool but what do you get out of it?

Kennysolidsnake

Well i dont mean to sound smug but frankly what i get out of it is the great feeling of being right and me along with other PS3 fans being vindicated and proven right that PS3 will eventually catch 360 as we have been saying for the last few years.

First, they could discontinue the PS3 and PS3 fanboys would still say that it would pass the 360 in sales.

Second, the PS2 completely dominated last gen so for the PS3 to fight for SECOND place is much more of a failure than the 360 beating the PS3 for four years and stealing a huge marketshare from Sony.

Third, who cares.

Economists use incredibly complex modelling to make predictions (and STILL are often wrong)... whereas the TC simply took a good month for the PS3 and assumed this will be the case non-stop going forward. Please.

For one, what source did you get your EU and Japan numbers from? It's always nice to share sources so you don't look like you're pulling it out of your lower regions.

Even with your flawed "calculations", I still don't think the PS3 will catch up to the 360 by the end of this year. For example, in NA, the PS3 was barely able to keep up with the 360 in total 2009 sales. 2009 was undoubtedly the 360's worst year and the PS3's best year. If the PS3 can't keep up in that situation, it looks like they will never catch up. Not to mention the software sales for the PS3 are laughable.

2010 is not going to be like 2009 for the 360. It has many good titles and Microsoft is going to market Natal pretty heavily it seems.

well i hope your right LP4EVA2005
I hope he is not right, I want Sony to learn a lesson from all this market share loss. I want them to realize that their name is not so powerful that they can sell anything they want at any price and expect people to buy it. I want them to actually respect their fanbase next gen. I dont want to see the PS4 with some other "special" features that drive the price through the roof and then sit there and expect people to "work harder" for it. They dumped on the PS2 owners this gen.

No way no how. I remember people thinking the PS3 would over take the 360 by summer of 2009, that obviously didn't happen and there's no indication that Fall of 2010 will be any different.

Also the Wii dominates in sales, so why continue to worry about second place?

You used december sales? No console keeps those figures up for months other than november and december. Plus you cherry picked a month in the US where PS3 outsold the 360. Not exactly hard number but fudging figures.

So the 360 gets released on 2005, and the PS3 will overtake it by 2012... That's sooo far into the generation to even matter, and so close to the next one starting. Also, How will it compare if the next xbox comes out before the next playstation console? Will you still compare PS3 to the xbox720 (or whatever)?

[QUOTE="mythrol"]This entire theory is based off of one GIANT assumption: That Microsoft is going to sit back and do NOTHING. I can 100% GUARANTEE that the PS3 will not have caught up by Dec 2010. To think that Microsoft is going to see it's lead deplete continually by half a MILLION per month and sit back and allow it to happen is completely asinine. Microsoft has Halo Reach and Natal this year and saying as they really didn't do a price cut to counter the PS3's big drop (only offering bigger HDD's for the same price) I'm sure Microsoft could at any time do a price drop if they needed to. I'm not saying the PS3 NEVER catches up to the 360, but in no way will it surpass the 360 by Dec 2010 like you're saying. I will take ANY bet on this issue.ZIMdoom

I would counter by saying your defense of MS is based on one giant assumption: That there is anything more that MS can do.

Keep in mind that they launched a year earlier than the PS3, and $200 cheaper. Despite having a larger game library right now, and a sku even cheaper than the Wii...they STILL have not been able to increase their total lead beyond what they sold during that first year with ZERO competition. Price drops and exclusives have kept them ahead, but it has never helped them catch up. Hell, even when PS3 had their first official price drop last year, they were STILL more money than the 360 and managed to outsell it for roughly half the year.

Meanwhile, Sony has caught up in basic price, has released some great exclusive titles, and is supposedly outselling the 360 in Japan, EU (not just UK which 360 wins). Further, this December, the biggest month for consoles, the PS3 beat the 360 for the first time. the PS3 had its best month yet while the 360 saw a sharp decline...even INCLUDING the basic sku that is like $199. This seems to say that interest in the 360 is holding steady at best, and possibly starting to decilne at worst. Meanwhile, interest in the PS3 seems to be increasing as Sony's saleshave risen world wide this past year.

So what does that say? What more can MS possibly do other than more of the same, which hasn't really HELPED them do anything other than tread water?

I've already addressed this in my first post. Microsoft has Halo Reach releasing this year + Natal which will attract an ENTIRELY NEW AUDIENCE (not more of the same like you suggest) and they still haven't had a price cut to counter the PS3's price drop. Also you're completely wrong about "more of the same" not having an effect on sales. It was only after Sony did not one, but TWO price cuts that they were finally able to outsell the 360 in NA. By your logic after the first price cut didn't put them ahead of Microsoft they should of just given up. Which is just asinine. I promise you if Microsoft were to start selling the elite for $199 there'd be a huge spike in sales. As I've stated, I'll take ANY bet that Sony won't surpass Microsoft BY December 2010. You know the saying: Put up, or shut up.

Correct or not the fact is one...

When youll be near or even surpass X360 , microsoft would be a year more or less away for introducing the new console.

If PS and Sony , the leaders for a decade in console wars , is proud that will "surpass" X360 after 5-6 years ... well... Too bad for sony i guess...

IS NOT something to be proud of when PSone and PS2 were and still are a tremendous success over PS3...

Very true. Also, should MS come out early with their next console, people will be anxious to check out the graphics kings that will no doubt arise on it until PS comes out with their next console. Meaning, the favors will swing in Microsofts direction again anyways.

Christmas season is almost over. And theres another Halo coming out. People want NATAL. And Cod is a 360 seller honestly. Also for your math to work the 360 would have to have a serious halt in sales. Your calculations are wrong

Yep, Elite could probably see another $100 dollar cut without a huge amount of loss, if Sony tried to counter, they'd be seeing 2006 loss per unit once more.

if you weigh last gen's numbers, PS3 should have caught up in 2007, but look at the ignorant company behind it.

Your math is highly incorrect, the PS3 will not over take the X-Box by December. The only way that would ever happen is if people all of the suddenly stopped bying x-box. Before you jump to the idea that im a crazed fanboy, it should be known that I only have a PS3.

Lets look at the math. On average, the xbox sold around 397558 consoles per month in the US during 2009, while the ps3 only sold 361217. If these trends continue at this same rate the PS3 will NEVER pass XBOX. Its mathematically impossible. For PS3 we will use 397558X as our equation, and 361217X for the XBOX. These lines never intersect, thus the values never meet.

Now, we have to consider the rest of the world. While the PS3 sells around twice as much as XBOX in Japan, the XBOX sells twice as much in Europe so we can cancel out both of those values. Thus, the PS3 will not ever catch the XBOX.

You display this in your sig but you are constantly talking sales figures. You are one big walking contradiction my friend.

US a average of 65,000 consoles.

I thought the 360 outsold the PS3 for october and november.

You're right. The PS3 only started out selling the 360 when the Slim came out anyway. I would wait a little longer to start talking about 'averages'.

So you think the PS3 will outsell the 360 by over half a million every single month for the next 11 months heh.. :roll:Your EU numbers are way off, consider this for your mathematics, USA is 47% of the video game market and consumes about an average of 150k video game console units per month. You might want to learn some math before any more speculations and pulling numbers out of the air.

If the Sony fanboys' calculations were correct, the PS3 would have overtaken the 360 WW by 2007.
