Sega FTW

Sega was in increasing financial trouble since introducing the Sega CD. The 32X and Saturn were both disasters for them, and it's that financial problem that caused them to pull the plug on the Dreamcast. By contrast, Nintendo has a highly lucrative handheld market that it dominates, and as of the launch of the Wii had a $6 billion war chest. Nintendo Economics FTW. Sega Economics FTL.

Nintendo has much more of a chance of bankrupting than Microsoft and Sony combined.

Sony is actually the company in danger.  Their gaming division has run a 1 billion dollar defict over the past 3 quarters.  Sony is a company that only makes a couple of billion dollars a year, so that's a pretty big hit to their bottom line.

Nintendo is the only one of the big three actually making money.

wow you have no idea what you are talking about do you ?

how so? What he said was the truth. gaming division-wise at least, nintendo is the only company making money. Sony is taking a big hit from the gaming division, and there was a link a few pages back showing that sony have made only a few billion dollars this year.

that was because of R&D, ever heard of that ? every game maker loses money on R&D and also loses a lot at launch for manufacturing of consoles, MS lost billions on xbox and 360. still no one proved if they are close to bankruptcy, infact they posted record profits for january. sony has their hand in so many different things its funny. and they make money for every blu-ray movie cus they own blu-ray. blu-ray just won the format war so they are gonna make hundreds of millions off that alone. gaming is but a small part of their business, they are the top maker of flat-screen tvs as well. they make cameras, batteries, anything electronic that you can think of.

theres the link to sony's financial stuff. check it out for yourself.

ya i saw, where does it say "we are close to bankruptcy sorry stockholders" infact their stocks have shot up sharply recently. and you totally avoided everything i said.

I never even hinted that sony were going bankrupt, where the hell did you get that from? All i'm saying is financially, they're not doing quite as well as nintendo. And they're not. thats all.

what happened to Sega could happen to Nintendofarnham

... and it could also happen to Sony and Microsoft.

I think no console will fail this gen. Nintendo has the most appealing console, Microsoft is growing quickly and Sony has it fanbase.

What happened to Sega happened because Sega did very bad decisions. It didn't happen because  of bllind luck, like you are stating when you say that it could happen to Nintendo.

Of all three companies, Nintendo is the "richer" (not in absolute numbers, but in capabilities of generating profits)

Well Sega didn't have a Wii nor a handheld segment with a huge line of profit. I also don't see Nintendo having Financial problems for quite a few gens back. I really don't know where some people at this point in time can even consider this possibility.

that guy said they were in danger, and you agreed with him. and again of course they didnt make as much because they were developing and manufacturing the ps3 and blu-ray technology of course, but they arent even close to losing money. now that they are done developing and researching for ps3 and its out in the open, they will make more profits. and like i said blu-ray won the format war, and when spider-man 3 hits exclusively on blu-ray they are gonna make a lot of money. oh speaking of that, last year sony had the most #1 movies ever, it was a record, and they also broke a record for profits in 2006 in their movies division for any studio in history. they have become the biggest most successful movie studio along with videogame company, and with spider-man 3 coming like i mentioned before, well you can finish the rest...

I doubt Nintendo would ever go 3rd Party. Didn't they say they would sooner leave the console business? Well I kinda agree with them leaving all together and just making some super handheld if that's true. Nintendo is way to stubborn to ever make games for Sony or MS that would be like the Spartans bowing down to the Persians in 300. Its not gonna happen. Nintendo's stubborn attitude would drive their company to the grave before that.

erm... Nintendo Gameboy + Nintendo DS + Nintendo Wii + good first party game vs unprofitable hardware vs crappy arcade game rehashes Nintendo comparisons to sega are pretty ludicrous. If we become all ludicrous and we were able to comment on this thread, lets say if it turned out Shigeru embezzled all of nintendo's vast wealth and ran away to pluto, and ds's started blowing up like Sony laptop batteries, then i would hope microsoft would do some wheeling and dealing to secure nintendo's exclusivity. they have the money and would desperately want to win over the japanese market.

I remember Nintendo saying they would never go thrid-party and if for some reason they can't continue to make consoles they would just stop gaming and the company would shutdown.Synchro456
I think you are a little misled. Nintendo may stop making consoles for whatever reason, but if handheld sales are still strong they will stay in that market. And I don't see Nintendo handheld sales EVER slowing down. So no matter what happens with their consoles, Nintendo isn't going anywhere for a long, long time.

I would rather have it Multiplat if that happens because I don't want it to split up because I want all the Nintendo games on one console I wouldn't want there Franchises to split up, because I would only want to buy one console, but if they where Multiplat I can buy one console and not have to worry that I'm missing Nintendo's games hypothetically.

If Nintendo went third party, which I doubt they will since they are rolling in dough, I believe they would put the majority of their franchises on a Sony console only because I think they would sell better to a Sony audience. Don't  automatically think they wouldn't support their old nemesis Sony just because of past event because did you ever think Sega would put Sonic on a Nintendo platform? And again, Nintendo isn't going third party, so we really don't have to worry about this.

Here's a little tid-bit. Nintendo makes sure they make PROFIT on everything they sell. Even though the GC didn't sell too many units, it was still very profitable. They won't go 3rd party, and I think they'd drop out of gaming rather than go multiplat.

Sega went under because they were in the exact same boat as Nintendo has always been in. When you are strictly a gaming development company then you have to set your financial resources to a standard that will keep your company going. Sega did not do that and instead of trying to make money on their consoles, they were losing profits and eventually the competition killed them because of it. Not to metion they never had a solid fanbase to begin with so trying to compete was tough, this is why Sony and Microsoft can afford to make expensive consoles and are willing to take the losses because they have extra money coming in from other sources.

that was because of R&D, ever heard of that ? every game maker loses money on R&D and also loses a lot at launch for manufacturing of consoles, MS lost billions on xbox and 360. still no one proved if they are close to bankruptcy, infact they posted record profits for january. sony has their hand in so many different things its funny. and they make money for every blu-ray movie cus they own blu-ray. blu-ray just won the format war so they are gonna make hundreds of millions off that alone. gaming is but a small part of their business, they are the top maker of flat-screen tvs as well. they make cameras, batteries, anything electronic that you can think of. -Me_Ur_Daddy-

Keep in mind that of the billions of dollars they have sunk into R&D, that they cannot turn profits from it.  Not in direct sales at any rate.  Any direct sales they make from their PS3 just generates a larger deficit.  Now the problem here is, when does all that R&D money turn into profit?  If it does, when will it start generating a net income to off-set all the costs?

Sony's gaming division is in real danger, especially since their whole business stratagy around the PS3 revolved around it selling as good (or better) than the PS2.  Investers/stockholders into Sony will have a hard time swallowing what they are fed about the PS3, because for Sony to gain a large marketshare they have to sell millions and millions of units.  Even in an idealistic situation of them selling 100 million PS3s, that still will cost Sony a staggering 20 billion dollars to pull off it they take a loss of 200 dollars per unit.  That translates into 2-3 billion dollars a year.  Granted of course the technology will become cheaper as years go by, but odds are they will be taking losses on each console sold for several years to come.

So in terms of companies that might inevitably drop out of the console wars, it would be Sony first, Microsoft second (although MS has a lot of incomes to rely on, if a department of a company does not make money, there is little to no reason to keep it up) and finnally Nintendo.

[QUOTE="RahnAetas"][QUOTE="lzorro"]^^wait what are we talking about the Company as a whole or just they're gaming division?lzorro

If you're just talking about gaming divisions, then Sony is way in the lead... for highest deficit. Their gaming division hasn't made money in 3 quarters. Once Q4 earnings are released, odds are Sony will have gone 12 months without making a single penny from their gaming division.

I find it hard to believe that Sony Electronics Sony Computer Entertainment Sony Ericsson (50%) Sony Pictures Entertainment Sony BMG (50%) Sony Marketing Sony Life Sony Assurance Sony Bank Only make a few billion each year :?

Sony has very small market shares in most of those divisions, especially with the Ericsson mobile phones and their BMG music division which is extremely tiny compared to the other big record lables out there. Sony really only makes money on their other electronics like televisions and mp3 players. Blu Ray isnt helping them either player sales wise, its costing them tons of money to market it and they have to sell it at the price that will make them some money, I certainly aint going to pay 1300 CAD for a Blu Ray player when the PS3 is half the price and has a Blu Ray player.

Nintendo has much more of a chance of bankrupting than Microsoft and Sony combined.

Dont kid yourself, Sony could easily have to kill off some of their divisions in order to keep the PS3 afloat, if M$ keeps losing money on the 360 and cant start making a profit 2 or 3 years after its release, they are going to have to start cutting division as well. Nintendo only has its handheld and console divisions, well they also own the Seattle Mariners and are part owners of the Atlanta Hawks basketball team, but I doubt they make much money out of both those companies. Nintendo has profits coming in left and right because game development time is a lot shorter for the Wii then other consoles, thus allowing for more games to be produced by both first and 3rd party companies with ease. Even if games dont sell as well on the Wii, development costs are a lot cheaper for them and thus they make a profit on the games.
