I'd say wait until that gen ends before they can leave the industry and NEVER look back.
Lol, sure, company with several multibillion dollar brands decides to just stop using them. Very likely hahaha.
Decides to stop using them after seeing that there is little to no interest for them on other systems? I don't see the PlayStation/XBOX/PC audience buying the likes of what Nintendo has to offer when, again, the majority of them have since moved on from Nintendo at this point. I don't see Smash faring anywhere near as well as Traditional Fighters, I don't see Splatoon faring as well as CoD, and I sure as hell don't see JRPG fans on PlayStation clamor for Pokemon like they do Final Fantasy, Tales of, or Shim Megami Tensei/Persona.
Announce at the nearest E3 that their next Mario title will be multiplatform. That should be enough to get the message across.
Doesn't everyone and their mother know that the Xbox was the spiritual successor to the Dreamcast? Sega was even trying to find a way for the OG Xbox to be able to play Dreamcast games.

Yup, people here have seen me refer to the OG Xbox as the DC2, 360 as the DC3 and X1 well, as the DC3.5. lol :P
Nintendo has already shot their foot by not releasing the console during the holidays. That can hurt initial sales if there isn't HUGE titles at launch. I have a feeling they wont receive the third party support a lot of people have asked for and that will ultimately cause them to bow out.
I don't think it should last as long as the Wii U did. What a painful 4 years.
But if Nintendo makes their own PS4 Neo type console upgrades then I don't think it'll matter. Each revision gives them a chance to reposition the brand, so if it fails out the gates they won't have to make an entirely new system.
Honestly, if Nintendo was to ever drop out of consoles, I'd probably be done with consoles and go exclusively PC. I'm hoping Nintendo pulls off something great with the NX because the PS4 and Xbone are turds in the games department. At least Nintendo can provide a library of games different to what is offered on PC.

I know YOU don't see it. I know YOU think the strongest brand names in gaming history (Mario and Pokemon) will collapse overnight if they *GASP* run on a generic computer rather than a Nintendo branded computer. But you're crazy, to be fair. That's not how reality works.
Gamers like good games, it's really that simple. They just aren't willing to buy shit systems.
I think I might be done buying non-Nintendo consoles after this gen. If Nintendo went third party, I'd be PC only. The other consoles just cost way too much to justify the 1 or 2 games per year that I want to play on them.
Agreed. If there's no Nintendo, then no console for me. The other consoles are pretty much pointless if you've got a PC.
As for the topic, I highly doubt Nintendo will ever go third-party. Not in any near future, at least.
Not everyone has a PC or even cares about having a gaming PC?, Including there still allot of PS4 only games out there that you can't get on PC.
I strongly disagree that we don't owe Nintendo anything. It's also probably going to take Nintendo a LOT more than two consecutive "flop consoles" to sell off or go third party. All those great Sega franchises basically went to waste after their demise, and the few that didn't just suck this day and age. Here's hoping that Nintendo kills it. I am sick of these idiots out there that refuse to support companies simply because they want to see them fail so they can "be right". Everyone needs to get off the bandwagon and make their own damn decisions. No, I didn't care too much for the Wii.. the Wii U was a little better, still not great, however, I think the NX will nail it. If not then I don't even know where to start. Nintendo LOOKS as if they have finally wised up though. If they drop a couple MMO's like DQ and something unannounced along with a very strong showing of others games including new IP's, the ones we are expecting, and a couple throw backs AND if they have a good controller, then I don't see where they can go wrong if they have 3rd party support. THAT is what it all boils down to. Nintendo will sink or swim depending upon the support they receive by BOTH consumers and companies alike.

Even Nintendo is waking up to how profitable open platforms are. I'm already predicting software platforms, as opposed to hardware, are the future. The stage is already set for this with two x86 based console platforms and a likely third (Nintendo NX) on the way, on top of the expected mid-gen update to the PS4 platform. Add to that is the recent introduction of PS4 to PC streaming, which I normally would not have expected from a console company, but Sony has deep ties to the PC and mobile, with the now defunct Viao PC, Sony Online Entertainment and Playstation Mobile brands. While graphics hardware is not homogeneous across all platforms, the adoption of new and very efficient APIs can make this possible without any real porting necessary between PC and console, or vice-versa.
Built-in DRM and excellent customer service is what makes Steam so successful, and is a very good model for emulation. I for one would be more than happy to buy PS4 exclusives for my PC, even if it meant using Sony's proprietary digital download system or operating system. Just make the process fast, easy, and secure for the users. Piracy will always be a possibility on either console or PC, so it's best to just deliver a good experience and design DRM to be in the background with minimal interference both in-game and directly at the customer.
Well, I pretty much thought they abandoned Wii U after two years until they decided to coast off mediocrity so I give it two years before they stop swinging and four years before they cry uncle and make games exclusively for iPhones/iPads.
For me, it's pretty much the announcement. Another unorthodox, industry unfriendly console design and I'm hoping for Zelda on Xbox and playstation. Legacy catalog soon to follow.
Sadly I have to agree. I sure would love all those Nintendo games on superior hardware.
Nintendo has already said that their plan is to develop and operate the new membership service that encompasses smart devices and dedicated video game systems (the graphic illustration indicated smartphone, pc, tablet, 3DS, Wii U, and a dedicated game system NX). Technically aren't they already developing software as a 3rd party for smartphones with Miitomo? I wonder if they have plans to do something like Steam with or without an optical disc drive/cartridge? Does anyone think that Nintendo could at some point offer a subscription (call it Club Nintendo) through a PlayStation or Xbox like Netflix or Hulu, in addition to having their own dedicated home console hardware to play their games?
I think Nintendo will always make their own hardware, and they will always make video games, if at the very least for their handheld consoles. Their handhelds have been a reliable success for them. Nintendo has announced that they are moving away from the Wii U brand with the NX. If it turns out that the NX has a strange controller or some other characteristic that is not well-received; they could always start releasing ordinary powerful consoles with ordinary controllers. People are looking at their move into mobile as a sign of retreat, but it looks to me like they are trying to expand exponentially by putting their software on as many devices as possible (video game systems, pcs, tablets, and smartphones).
@Collie_Lover: Shh, dont tell no one Nintendo already went third-party. By time they catch on and realize it, itll be too late. Will we see games like Miitomo on Steam one day...most likely.
I dont think Nintendo will do a subscription like the competition. I think they will stay open like Steam, Apple, and others do. I do think they might offer refunds, or i pray they do!

Gamers like good games, yes. But only if it APPEALS to them.
Gamers weren't appealed by Beyond Good and Evil at initial launch.
Gamers weren't appealed by Bayonetta 2 when Nintendo laid their hands on it.
Both games were financial failures for their respective companies.
And like I said before, Nintendo's IP's DON'T have the appeal on the other systems, either because that audience has since moved past Nintendo at this point, or rather like what Sony and MS have to offer more so than Nintendo does, added with the fact that they SURE as hell appear to be enamored by what the third parties had, so they gave their **** you's to Nintendo and jumped ship to PlayStation quite exactly, and hell, some even refuse to give Nintendo credit for why the SNES was successful.

That's their loss?
Sure, there are PS4 exclusives. Very few of them are worth it, though.
@so_hai: not so much "don't understand" just I think we're taking things a little far when we claim that a global operation like Nintendo is purposefully going after a niche or unorthodox crowd. I can't think of a more monumentally terrible idea in running a business...
Also, conservative gamers play psn and xbox? Isnt that presumptuous as well?
I just think we're painting in very broad strokes with that thought.

What the **** does the failure of niche games like Beyond Good And Evil or Bayonetta (both of them) in sales, across ALL platforms, have to do with the most popular game series ever made, Mario and Pokemon?
"Nintendo's IP's DON'T have the appeal on the other systems" - Just because you keep shouting this won't make it true. You need facts and logic to prove a point, not repeated and wildly illogical claims.
@TheEroica: Well then it seems Nintendo has fell from grace with you. I couldnt imagine missing out on so many good Nintendo games. Especially in an industry so void of innovation as todays.
So what game from Nintendo that was on the Wiiu was so innovative?
@ryno1179: Depends in which way, bout all of them are. Hyrule Warriors for using dual screen coop instead of split screen. Pikmin 3 used touch controls so you could throw Pikmin with your stylus, touch way points to follow and use map etc. Captian Toad/Pushmo used touch controls to solve puzzles. Splatoon used the Gyro to give more precision by using it along with dual analogs for shooting. Xenoblade Chronicles X used it for map and resource management which was amazing. Plus it used it to fast travel which was a godsend. Star Fox Zero uses it to not only give more precision through the gyro while shooting, but also used as a second screen to switch from 1st person view and third person. Along with many other games too, but too much to list.

Hey, you were the one who said "gamers like good games" and used that as a definitive statement to why Nintendo games would sell well anywhere. Besides, you are aware that Ubisoft expected WAY more out out of Beyond Good and Evil, right? They didn't advertise Michel Ancel's involvement for no reason. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo and SEGA expected better from Bayonetta 2 (Bayonetta 1 AT LEAST sold 2 million units across two platforms).
There not illogical once you see what's popular these days. Have you forgotten that Nintendo isn't even in the top 100's anymore? Have you not seen the attitude towards them ever since the N64?
The fact that during their worst selling console ever, their net worth dropped by only a small percentage, makes me think that going third party is an option in the distant future. They'll test the mobile waters for the next decade at least before considering options like third party development on competing consoles.
Nintendo is in a double-bind with certain gamers and analysts. When the console sells well like the Wii it is described as a passing fad, and when the console does not sell well like the Wii U it is Nintendoom. In other words both are failures because of Nintendo hate. To be sure other companies would like a shot to fail as hard as Nintendo did with the Wii. The solutions for Nintendo in the opinion of certain critics: A) make an ordinary powerful console identical to PlayStation, Xbox, or PC with 3rd party support; or B) Nintendo go 3rd party even though said skeptics don't want to play Nintendo games anyway.

That's only in your opinion because everyone i meet are mainly ps4 owners while few are xbox one with one thinking of switching too ps4 & one mainly PC/PS3.
Bad marketing killed the WiiU, killed sales and chased 3rd party support away. Lets just hope they do the most important thing they absolutely need to nail - let people know that NX is out there.
The NX will nail it if its properly marketed to the masses. From everything we've read and learned, it's not hard to see how much soul Nintendo is putting on this one. They're swinging for online full force, they're expanding their reach, and they're even changing their brand in an attempt to get as far away from the deadly plague that is the Wii brand.

Again you're racing off on tangents. What the hell is a "top 100"? The attitude towards "them" (Nintendo) is that GAMERS HAVE BOUGHT HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF THEIR GAMES.
Mario and Pokemon are literally the most popular games in existence (leaving aside Free To Play), so again WHAT ARE YOU BABBLING ABOUT?
Baffling that a mod could post the classic "Nitundu to mah suny consul!"
Again, not surprising when Charizard made this thread about over a year ago (my math was way off).

And how are Mario games selling now? Sure in the millions, but as much as in the past? No, and I doubt it's because of their hardware (though it doesn't help). Funny enough, another pro-"Nintendo should be third party" camper who claims himself a "true Nintendo fan" slaps THAT in my face like he does his collection, but somehow still follows in the camp and believes they'd be a hit regardless.
This is the top 100 I'm talking about.
