NWA90s
if one of those three companies were to leave and that's a big IF here, it would be Mircosoft. That's what I think at least, but it won't happen, all companies are doing great regardless of their heated competition in sales. At the moment, Microsoft has their great online service doing great. Sony has impressive amount of exclusive games for all kind of audience. Wii has the casual gamers.. etc. So every company of those has a thing or two to keep them going and I don't see anyone leaving especially this year.
the obvious answer is Sony... Sony has been bleeding money for most of the past 5 years, whilst Ninty has been raking it in, and MS has been doing well for themselves.
Of course the Sony Corp. will still exist, but if 1 had to leave the Video Game Marketbased on their financial success of this gen, then it'd be Sony for sure. Sony is so out of touch with their consumers. They do have some great 1st party stuff though, but its not like Sony couldnt continue to develop/publish software and just leave the Hardware of it all to MS& Ninty.
That said, I would want to see another 3rd company take up the gauntlet to give NInty and MS more competition... 3 hardware developers is the sweet spot, imo.
Everyone who is saying anything but Sony are just choosing based on fanboyism.
FLAME SHIELD UP!
Microsoft would fail, they are basically babies in the console industry compared to Ninty and Sony, which both have gigantic fanbases.
Sony, on the other hand, has been struggling to make a profit as a whole, consistently for about a decade now. The PS2 carried them for several years and they flushed that advantage away by letting their primary competitor take the initiative to release a year ahed of them. ArchaoN
But the PS2 is the highest selling console of all time, and continues to sell and make plenty of money to this day. I think the reason why the PS3 was so pricey at first was because of the blu-ray, 6 years ago that wasn't common, i'm guessing.

The PS2 being the best selling console of all time does nothing for them now. The reality remains... They are not on good financial footing. If MS is as ruthless as they can be, they should release a new console asap, forcing Sony's hand. Sony cannot afford to release a new console now, as they have only started turning a profit within the last 12 months or so.Nintendo was worth more than Sony not long ago, I don't know if that has changed now that PS3 is more profitable. There's no way Microsoft would go down, they have windows, office, etc. Sony wouldn't either, they make tvs, blu ray players, etc. Nintendo is only games, so they're the only ones I could see going out of business. Won't happen though.

Yeah, it's probably between Sony and Nintendo. I don't know which is worth more, but there's no way Microsoft would go down.
Microsoft as,
1. Kinect is successful, but not the next wii like they hoped (and invested 500+ M in)
2. They have euthanized their 1st party
3. Microsoft is a very big $$$ oriented company, and the xbox brand has been delivering profit as well as the Zune in many of their minds(aka in the red). And now the zune is dead, xbox division may follow if sales drop
4. They don't have as much invested in game industry. Nintendo only does games, and Sony has a much larger developer list, and console + handheld divisions
dercoo
You make some good points. Kinect is the key point. It is selling, and pushing out a system earlier than expected will only upset consumers, ala sega.
Btw, the color of your text is difficult to read.:)
Microsoft definitly, and that isn't some "what if..." scenario for me, I really do believe they could be forced out of the console market. Unlike Nintendo and Sony they've got very little exclusive franchises. Bungie may be done with Halo now, Gears of War and Fable are on PC, Mass Effect 3 may be multiplat. How much time could Kinect buy Microsoft before the inevitability that people will eventually leave them because there's no reason to own their system over Sony's when Sony gets all the same multiplats and much more exclusives. It is also believed that Nintendo will be using more competitive graphics next gen which also means they will also get more multiplats than with the Wii along with Nintendo's large library of exclusives.
If Microsoft is forced out of the console market, it will be because of their low amount of exclusives.
The Wii, its the weakest of the bunch.Secret-Face
We're talking about the next gen, and the Wii is actually been the console king in terms of sales.
Nintendo would be the easiest to bring down. Look at Japan right now. They're still all messed up, who knows how bad it will get there. MS and Sony are both diversified into other areas so much that they wouldn't be brought down by bad console sales. Nintendo lives or dies by their game division because it's all they have. Therefor, a bad round or two and you could see them in the same position as Sega. mythrol
Retro Studios is in Texas.

Sony doesn't need to release a new console, if MS released a new console now they would be shooting themselves in the foot, no good first party, everyone worried the thing is going to break on launch, only one who charges for online (a fact many people were unaware when they bought a 360 because it was the cheaper of the two) ect. ps3 could compete and win with any xbox released anytime soonNintendo would be the easiest to bring down. Sony's homeland is Japan, it's a japanese conglomerate, and it's division called SCE (which includes consoles) has it's headquarters in Japan in which Kazuo Hirai is president & Group CEO of everything. SCE America is mearly a division of SCE, which SCE is a subsidiary of Sony Corporation.
Nintendo also has a division in America (Nintendo of America), and many offices in other countries. Though i agree Nintendo lives of dies by their console division because it's all they have. Sony is a conglomerate of many things, besides consoles.
Neither really, but Microsoft and Nintendo are more successful this gen, so I guess teh Sony?SaltyMeatballs
i have a feeling another company is about to step into the ring:o
sure. in this scenario that'll never happen, it'd be awful if anyone but microsoft was the one to go.
theuncharted34
My thoughts exactly :P. And the PS3 is doing great, despite seeming as though it is not because of its early years and being released a year later than the 360. Besides, the tables can turn in anyones favor.

My point wasn't to ignore the fact that Sony is based out of Japan just like Nintendo. I just think Nintendo's strongest market is Japan and so if Japan falls Nintendo would be hurt worse. As you have pointed out, Sony has their hand in many different things, so the impact of the earthquakes/tsunami in Japan is less on them.[QUOTE="SaltyMeatballs"]Neither really, but Microsoft and Nintendo are more successful this gen, so I guess teh Sony?eboyishere

I thought that as well, at one point, but then I feel that their business model wouldn't side well with console gamers. Upgrading hardware 2 times a year? No thanks.
*I'm assuming you are referring to Apple.

i thought of apple but they are so turned on to touch screen devices so the only thing i can see them do is handhelds(which is the rumor)....but off the top of my head apple is the only other company i think that will try to RE ENTER the console fight...idk

I suppose it would feel nice if Sega did, but it just doesn't make much sense. People are buying Sega games across 5 or 6 different platforms. Consoles typically create a loss, initially. Where is the gain in Sega re-entering the console market?
It won't be balanced without a third party so i hope none leave or go in a different direction, having three keeps the balance of quality as if there was just two then both companies would be hugely profitable and they'd get lazy, "why spend more money on it, it's already going to sell well" and we will see shovelware to high heaven.JohnF111That sounds like one company already.

with sonic now coming out on both marketplace and psn store i think it's safe to say sega isnt coming back to the console fight
