Yeah your partially right...nostalgia and name play a huge role in reviews thats the way it always has been and always will be. Quite frankly I don't hate SMG2, but I don't think it deserved a 10 just because it really isn't all that fun. And if its not fun what else does it have? Certainly not an amazing story...not incredible graphics...not amazing game mechanics, fun is really the only thing it has, and like I said since I don't find it all that fun...it doesn't offer a whole lot for me. It is worth pointing out though t I haven't actually beaten it ( I've played it for about 3-4 hrs)...so maybe I'm speaking unfairly...but thats just my opinion.
If Super Mario Galaxy 2 didnt score a 10, the Wiibiis would still be in hiding right now.

This...also Ima get flamed for saying this but if SMG2 had been the exact same game on any other system it would not have gotten a 10. Reviewers review games with a different mind set when they know they are on the Wii.

If SMG2 were on another system, it would have had HD graphics and fans of those systems would have gone nuts over it. See I can make wild claims too.

That's purely due to the graphics though, even though this game still looks good and has some amazing artistic design. All in all it doesn't change the point that this game has some of the most fluid, polishedand creative gameplay seen in any game on any platform.

I don't see why not, the highest scoring platformer on the other systems (LBP) has some of the most mediocore platforming you'll find and it got a 9. If anything, SMG2 would get a 12 if judged on those standards, it actually had to be better than other good platformers like NSMBWii, SMG1, Warioland, A Boy and His Blob etc.

I actually agree with this.
Compared to what PS3/360 owners call platformers, Mario is leagues and bounds ahead. Some people actually called Uncharted a platformer ...
Did anybody ever read the last part of the review of the first game from GS where it said:
When all is said and done, the thing that really makes Super Mario Galaxy such a standout game isn't the fact that it's another Mario game, but the fact that it doesn't evenneedto be a Mario game to be successful. Sure, it's got all the nostalgic flavor Mario fans would want, with the updated soundtrack, familiar foes, and various other Mario-related bric-a-brac scattered throughout the adventure, but the game never leans on these nostalgic aspects as a crutch. It instead puts the whole of its focus on its gameplay design, and with good reason. You could probably swap in just about any other characters from practically any other franchise, and this would still be a phenomenally fun game. That it layers all these memorable characters and components on top of that phenomenal design just makes it all the sweeter. If ever there were a must-own Wii game, Super Mario Galaxy is it.
GameSpot
Why would SMG2 really be any different?
What I find more surprising is how NSMBW got an 8.5. It's a very unspectacular 2D platformer that is hard to focus on for more than half an hour if you're not playing with friends.

Haha, I disagree, the game had crappy art and crappy music (except the castle theme, that kicked so much ass) but gameplay wise its pretty damn good, predictable but every level had you do some sort of new focus and activity. I found it quite enjoyable. The game went to crap with 4 people, you can't play precision mario with people bumping into each other. But some of the levels were just ridiculously cool and well designed specifically the 8th, 7th and 6htworlds and the last world had awesome throwback music. I played that gme at large chunks too.
Mario is a ool dude with tons of appeal ...
Still ... I think Mario Galaxy was a boring cake walkof game

I thought Mirrors Edge was okay, I just think Mario Galaxy is boring and ridiculously easy.
The last platformer i really enjoyed was Prince of Persia 1-3. I like the original Jak and Daxter too
Last paragraph of the GS mario galaxy review:

If Super Mario Galaxy 2 didn't have the word "Mario" in the title and there was a different main character, I guarantee it would not have gotten such high reviews. Im not trying to hate on Nintendo, I used to be a huge Nintendo fan but I have realized that they just rehash the same game over and over again. The worst example of this is Zelda. Zelda ocarina of time is my favorite game of all time but since it came out, nintendo has seriously completely rehashed the game over and over (except Majoras mask). But anyway, it seems like alot of people who are saying Super Mario Galaxy 2 deserves a 10 are blinded by nostalgia. Im not saying SMG2 is a bad game but it really is not as great as everyone makes it out to be and without Mario in it, it would have got lower scores.

Go play the game and get to the green stars before you spread your disagreement.

Which is why the original beat Halo 3 and other PS3/PC/360 games for GoTY.
(sigh) Its a shame the standards argument wont just die already
Whats really irritating about these threads is most of the creators confirm in their first post a) they haven't played it and b) they have no plan to because all Nintendo do is rehash. Somebody needs to dig out the Super Paper Mario pic about complaining on forums me thinks :P.

say that once you get to the green stars, because I thought the same thing up till around that point when it started getting hardI completely disagree with rehashes of Mario and Zelda. Games like Ratchet and Clank,God of War and Halo hardly change at all and it would still get the same score if it had another character in it.
Thanks, but SW doesn't need another over assuming wannabe psychologist.all you people complaining about these threads LOVE them, dont even pretend otherwise. you know this to be true
exhibit a: you continually post in them, when just ignoring them completely would be far more effective as they would sink off the first page in like 10 minutes
exhibit b: it gives you a chance to pc+1 (this should probably be exhibit a, most important)
exhibit c: it provides another opportunity to defend the game, which is easy because its a popular position, and you can usually be a little bit brazen about it with nothing on the line--even more so than usual on the internet

that was pretty funny
Yeah I have played the game, I havent beat it yet but thats because I find it extremely boring. Its exactly like Mario Galaxy 1 and I had to force myself to finish the game. I got it at the same time I got Halo 3 and Gears of War and I had to force myself to stop playing those games just because I felt bad that my parents bought me SMG for Christmas and I hadnt even played it. My tastes in games have just changed since I was a little kid. Games like Zelda and Mario are just not fun to me anymore. I would much rather play deeper games like The elder scrolls, GTA, and Halo.

Wait did you just use deeper games and Halo in the game sentence...don't make me laugh. Hell even GTA4 was a gutted version of what the other installments had. I'll give you Elder Scrolls though, but saying Halo is a deep game is like saying Mario's the maturest game out there. Halo was the most casual FPS out there until CoD4...

He is certainly entitled to his own opinion but that hardly qualifies him to run out and make threads about how SMG2 is only so critically acclaimed because the main character is a fat moustache sporting italian wearing red overalls

Well Gamespot, the site you are posting on, specifically refuted your point in their official review.

And don't put "deep" in the same sentence as halo or GTA. They're some of the most shallow games around. That's why they're so fun and popular.

change "MARIO" to "LUIGI" and its still gonna be EPIC!
smg would have gotten its scores no matter the character surrealnumber5This. There seem to be a growing number of people saying Nintendo games get a free pass for having that label on it. So we're not even giving them credit for having those great games anymore? People never stopped to think that maybe these games get high scores because they're fantastic games did they? By this logic, 50% of the PS3 and 360's great games are getting free rides as well.
Its a great game, only problem with it is that the game is that its way way way too easyDiviniuzDid you get every single star? Some of the bonus and comet stars can get quite tricky.

But someone PLEASE explain to me how GTA and Halo are "deeper" than Mario? You want deep? Go play a good RPG. The only one of those games listed that has any depth beyond Mario's is Elder Scrolls, which is an RPG. I've played Mario, Halo, and GTA. All good games, I like Mario best, and I have to say GTA and Halo are far easier than Mario. So he can't be talking about difficulty... in terms of depth, as I said, there's no depth in either. Everyone doesn't need to like a game because reviewers do, but they shouldn't be a fanboy and degrade a developer's hard work by claiming that the only reason people like it is because it has Mario in it, WITHOUT EVEN BEATING THE GAME !!!Yeah I have played the game, I havent beat it yet but thats because I find it extremely boring. If the game would have been called Crash Galaxy 2 or Sonic Galaxy 2, the game would still get incredible high scores, it is really that good.
That's total bull. I think that JUST BECAUSE Mario is the main character you think it is somehow THE SAME GAME. Wrong! Have you not grown up with the Nintendo series? If you have, how on earth can you not admit that Nintendo has constantly added to their series' formulas and enhanced the experience? The fact that Nintendo has been able to keep their franchises, with the core series being nearly three decades old, and make them completely relevant and fun today, is no small feat. And if it were all nostalgia, Sonic would not be getting crap reviews like it does. To me, the Nintendo games (and notable others) are a place of escape from all of the boring run-of-the-mill first person shooters, GTA rip-offs, and senseless action games out there.
Just because a game has blood, guts, and prostitutes does not mean it is a deeper game. I hate how you say "My tastes have changed since I was a little kid." It's almost as if you are generalizing all gamers and dissing those who have opposite tastes from yours. Halo and Elder Scrolls are awesome, but if I am stranded on an island that has a shack with electrical outlets, I would rather have my Super Mario Galaxy 2 over those titles. As I have grown older, I have actually enjoyed Mario, Metroid, Zelda (and games like it such as Okami) even more than what I used to. So am I regressing in my age or something?
This pretty much. The game is a cakewalk.Mario is a ool dude with tons of appeal ...
