Desired Specs:

  • 7nm FinFET APU with 8-Core Ryzen CPU and a decent Vega GPU core. (8 to 10 FP32 Teraflop rating) + ARM Co-processor for Operating System and Background Processes.
  • 12GB/16GB of GDDR5X or GDDR6 memory (HBM2 is too expensive)
  • 4K Ultra Blu-Ray player
  • Backwards compatible with PlayStation 4

Nice specs and all but why wait years for that when in a few short months the X1X will be available? If you own an X1X, it would be hard to get excited about those specs years down the road.

If these are the specs two years from now, I will be shocked. Apparently you doesn't understand these specs at all. This is shooting for a 1080Ti or above. This would be a monster in two years and I don't think if they release something in 2 years that it would be this strong. An Xbox X is no where near this powerful.

2019 release makes the most sense to me based based on technology progression , competition , the assumed need for industry hardware/software buying re-enthusiasm from consumers at that time , and Sony's own development studios and the way they have things layed out. AAA development takes time and I don't see another round of games from their major studios this gen . The Last of Us Part II , maybe another big partner game , and Death Stranding will close out the gen just fine. Some might even end up as cross-gen games.

I won't even attempt a guess at the specs though , but it will be a monster compared to OG PS4 (lol). Sony going above $399 wouldn't surprise me at all , although with the incredible yearly income from PS+ , they might be willing to eat a good loss on hardware initially. Only time will tell.

Guerrilla Games should be the 1st major studio to tackle the beast with an exclusive - HZD 2. The shackles will be off. Goodbye PS4. They are likely already in pre-production and will be working with the PS5 hardware / software tools desingers every step of the way. Polyphony , Santa Monica , Bend , Sucker Punch , and the Naughty Gods will follow. It's a little strange that some of these companies will only have 1 PS4 game for the gen like Santa Monica and Bend ... but maybe next gen they'll be able to hit with 2 !

Japan Studio is a wildcard. I could see them making a couple more PS4 games while also trying to make a PS5 game to release the 1st year of PS5.

Media Molecule's future seems uncertain. They could get canned after Dreams , or perhaps Sony could let them just make a more traditional single player 2D or 3D platformer for PS5 without the lofty ambitions of another play , create , share title. Only time will tell.

No need for a PS5 in the near future. The PS4 is imo the greatest console ever created.

That's funny. X1X bests the PS4 and Pro in many ways.

And yet when it comes to the single most important thing it's not even close to PS4 and Pro...

Taste in games is entirely personal opinion. Many tout new Zelda as one of the greatest ever, many like myself, have no history with the series, and will never buy a Switch or Wii U just to play this game we don't hardly care about.

You are talking software, which is separate from hardware anyway. Hardware for hardware X1X tops anything Sony's ever done, and it's not even close. An actually honest Playstation fan could admit, that if he could, he'd play all his favorite PS4 games on an X1X, with all that machine could do. Only the truly bias would reject this hypothetical situation. If your preferred software lineup was available on the unarguably superior platform, you'd take the X, that is my point. You are clinging to software to try to defend a piece of inferior hardware.

If PS5 comes out by 2019 it pretty means the PS4 PRO was a failure and it be a slap in the face to ppl who bought the pro also

Huh? That makes zero sense. They made it clear that is was an optional mid-gen upgrade.

Without him even saying it, you already knew that PS has better software than xbox lol.

They won't have backwards compatibility for PS4, i think they've said recently that it isn't important enough for them to implement or something along those lines. That means game drought for the first year or two.

Even people who hate Playstation can admit the PS4 has the best quality and quantity exclusives. Doesn't take away from other platforms, but Sony finally got the hardware and software right.

hbm is roughly $150 for 8gb......no way joe say

Well it will be at least 24 GB's of GDDR5/GDDR5X then. They are not just doubling the ram with the PS5.

Also, we are talking 2019, prices will come down.

prices on HBM wont come down until HBM3 which wont be ready until 2020. Gddr6 and a good amount of it is whats best for sony cost wise

Well, they will need much higher bandwidth. Like 500 GB/s at the very least. I don't know what GDDR5x is maxing out at these days.

on ggdr5x with a 256bit bus you can get around 440 Gbps. gddr6 i think is somewhere close to 500Gbps. if they bump it up to 384 bit interface its somewhere around 700Gbps

@getslaidalot: imagine the best PC you could build in 2017, that will be your PS5. Over it's time however it would perform better thanks to LOW level API and faster memory. To answer your question much better than the X1X.

Your theory is perfectly plausible and it is what I have been thinking about since the end of 2017. The raw computational power of the PS5 will be equivalent to the best PC you can assemble in 2017. If you build a PC with a GTX 1080Ti and a good CPU. You will have pretty much set up a PS5 in terms of raw power. The difference is that the architecture of the PS5 will be cooler and the possibilities of software optimization will be more elastic as every console is made to be. I have my doubts regarding the memory of the future consoles because they can be GDDR5x or GDDR6 and how much can be between no less than 16GB and nothing more than 32GB. If you compare the power of a RX VEGA 64 with 13 Teraflops you will conclude that it has the performance of a GTX 1080 with 9Teraflops. So I believe that by the end of 2019 AMD will have released a Mid-End GPU for a friendly price reaching RX VEGA 64 performance. So I believe that in 2020 AMD will already have a Mid-End GPU with performance over 13Teraflops and very close to the performance of a GTX 1080Ti previously mentioned by friendly prices. But anyway a PS5 with performance of a GTX 1080 9Teraflops that corresponds to a RX VEGA 64 with 13Teraflops will already be enough for a satisfactory generational jump. The consoles do not need to run games at max settings. The 4k resolution pantry the use of Anti-Aliasing and any kind of graphic dispensing will be a great benefit to the performance of games in both FPS and improvements in textures, lighting and etc. The bottom line is that it does not make a direct comparison between Console and PC architectures. Whatever the PS5 is it will be a powerful and incredible machine.
