So there are many fans specific to a console, so I have to ask... for those that enjoy a console exclusivly...
What would happen if Nintendo stopped making consoles?
What would happen if Microsoft stopped making consoles?
What would happen if Sony stopped making consoles?
Would you go to one of the competitor's? Would you stop playing games? Would you go to PC gaming? What would you do? What would happen to the industry?
I ask these questions kind of in retrospect to what happend to Sega. This is the first generation in nearly 20 years where there hasn't been a Sega system. God only knows what innovation we're missing out on because Sega no longer creates systems. Sega was the first to release a CD system (granted it failed). They were the first to make a memory card ability. They were the first to have a color backlit handheld. They were the first to have an online console. The VMU was one of the most innovative memory card systems I can think of. Sega will be missed.
For me, given that I'm a Playstation fan, if Sony stopped making the Playstation, I think I would probably go to Xbox. Not because Nintendo is bad or anything, but because 360 has 80% of the games that PS3 has and vice verse. I honestly think that if Playstation stopped production that it would hurt the industry because they have been in it for so long and have contributed so much.
