halo's graphical style doesn't permit gears type graphics. which is fine, because gears proved the best graphics ever don't necessarily make a good game.

[QUOTE="Overthrow"]I guess they're just not very good developers.Callofdutynoob

If they aren't good developers then NO ONE is.

By the way, Epic > Bungie.

That is so true. Also Company of Heros rocks! So I like epic

Yeah, Epic did a good job on Company of Heroes... :|

[QUOTE="Makari"]We don't know how it will actually run, and those people saying it'll max with a 7800GTX are the same ones that were saying DX10 is faster than DX9 - i.e. they're just listening to the marketing hype and not applying actual critical thinking to what's going on.Teufelhuhn

DX10 is faster than DX9, FYI. I can tell you from personal experience.

so you get higher fps with dx10 lost planet than dx9? hahah.. yeah, it's faster at rendering certain effects, which makes dx10 even possible on dx10 cards. the people i'm talking about were the ones saying you'd get a fps BOOST from turning on dx10 effects, thus making cards like the 8600 series able to surpass the 7950 or x1950 series cards. they forgot that SM3.0 is also 'faster' than SM2.0, but you don't see enabling HDR giving a fps boost in any games.

Well of course you're going to have worse performance with more effects, that holds for any version of directx with any GPU. I'm just saying if you were to use DX10 to do the same thing you were doing in DX9, it would be faster. Just like it would be faster to compile the same exact shader code in SM3.0 rather than SM2.0.

And don't talk to me about that crap Lost Planet demo. That thing is so poorly made it simply tries to start the game in 1280 x 720 and crashes if your monitor can't display that resolution.

The real question is why people care of trivialities like that when all the games mentioned will be awesome and none because its visuals are.

huh.. which monitors can't do that? i use a 2001fp that runs 4:3, and it started fine in that completely whacked-out resolution (12x7). stuff like that feels more like it'd be a driver thing than anything else, though i must confess to not having any experience with my monitor crashing trying to run any resolution. :) edit: though again, i was talking about the people here who told other users that you'd see a fps boost just by using dx10. imo that was pretty misleading, and you're going to see a lot of pissed-off users saying things like 'i thought dx10's supposed to be faster?' just because other forumers told them the wrong thing.

A game should never rely on a monitor to support anything but 640 x 480, which all monitors can do.  See what happens when you initialize DX, is you're supposed to enumerate a list of valid display modes that the adapter can handle.  Then you can either use a previously saved display mode and make sure its valid, or you can simply choose one of the acceptable ones off the list and allow the user to change it later.  What Lost Planet does is it just "picks" 1280x720, checks the adapter to see if its valid, fails, and then exits.  It's ameteur, and completely unacceptable.  It's not "my monitors fault" for not supporting one particular resolution out of many, especially one that's a different aspect ratio.
