ÂJust about any Square rpg from the SNES/PS1 years... Probably SNES since the PS1 visuals are really tough to stomach at first.
To be more specific, probably FF4, FF6, or Chrono Trigger.

Trying to cover a lot of bases here, but RPG gets so much debate.
I think between Chronotrigger and Final Fantasy Tactics one can decide if they like RPGs or not, I think those two are universally accepted enough to judge a genre on.

Man I hate how people label Demon/Dark Souls as a jrpg. Just from the poll alternatives it's so obvious what kind of games it's asked about. Although they are games developed by a japanese company and they are rpgs they don't belong to the jrpg genre. They're too different and don't play the same way as other jrpgs but people just insist on recommending the games anyway.Â

*starts slow clap*or the fan translation of Mother 3(never played Earthbound). jg4xchampas you've said to me before.. you owe it to yourself to play it (EarthBound). edit: oh.. and my recommendations would be super mario rpg, chrono trigger, or earthbound. all are easy, fun/funny, have a great story, and are great introductions to the genre.

Not so much a genre, but definitely a style at least.

Its a label, a genre is something that tells you what you're getting into. If someone said a game is an action RPG, rougelike, tactical RPG, turn-based RPG, etc, then you have an idea of how the game is played. However when someone says something is a JRPG you can only assume that the game is Japanese, as it could be any of those sub-genres and more. JRPG doesn't discribe one type of gameplay style, it only says where the game is from and hints at the stylings the game will have.
I wouldnt reccoimmend Tales games at all.
Chrono Trigger.
It's available on multiple platforms too
Â
Dragon Quest IX is another good choice too.
