Go from the very first one. :)ShadowDeathXI agree to some extent, the first one is really good but extremely outdated. Assuming TC has never played a NES then he'll likely find it irritating. @TC, depends on what you want? Theres 3 main types of gameplay in Zelda games. Top down insane action?! :D A Link to the Past 3D? Start with Ocarina of Time. The other puzzle mixed with top down? Phantom Hour Glasss.
this is kinda an open question across several different consoles. some zelda games are on consoles that don't even exist anymore. friends are telling me to start with Ocarina of Time for the n64 but i'm not sure....You could have asked that question in the Nintendo Wii/Wii U Forum.

If you have a 3DS, you could try Ocarina of time.
Wind Waker is the weakest dungeon wise. It just has the most charm and character due to its presentation.Play the best one, Wind Waker.

Skyward Sword is the easiest and most straight forward Zelda game to date so I would start with that one. The other ones are are just as good too but for a first timer they'll be tedious as hell if you don't know what to expect or aren't very motivated to play them. Wind Waker with its navigation and Twilight Princess with the huge map aren't very friendly to new-comers but Skyward Sword was made for n00bs just like FF13.

They didn't put me to sleep like Twilight Princess'.
Despite Dungeons being a big part of the Zelda games I've never actually thought much of any of them (besides OoT which had some okay ones) they usually bore me and the boss of each is usually bad.
I mostly play Zelda for the characters/exploration/The main story(not the actualy story part, those are the same in all Zeldas, but how the story is presented)
All 3 of those things were done exceedingly well in WW, it's dungeons were meh but its Art style and presentation are what kept me going and going and turning it into my 2nd favorite game of all time (guess which one's first hurr)
Also WW is the strongest OST wise.

I would start with the Links Awakening with balanced and easy to get into gameplay that pumples you later, with good balance, or I would go for Casualized straight forward Skyward Sword. If you already are into big open games, I would move to Twilight Princess.
For a 2D Zelda, I'd recommend starting with A Link to the Past. For 3D, go with Ocarina of Time. I guess I'd say go with A Link to the Past for the very first one overall though. In my opinion, I've never played a Zelda game that looks, sounds, or feels like the epitome of the Zelda series as much as LttP does.
The first one and once you've either beaten it or given up (it's not an easy game) you should go for A Link to the Past or OoT. After OoT Majoras Mask. Wind Waker I would say is a game you should already enjoy the series to fully appreciate and if you play it first you will probably enjoy OoT and MM less as the graphics for them are very dated.Ace6301He said he wants to get INTO Zelda, not only do you give him one that is hard to access, but one that's not exactly varied or good to begin with.

Agreed on soundtrack, and I can buy into the idea WW is the best from an exploration standpoint on just because how much more lively that overworld was. Though not playing a Zelda game for the dungeons is odd to me considered that's the heart and soul of the games.Start from the first and go to SS. If you play the later games (TP and SS), playing OoT and MM might be an eye-sore for you. The 2D games don't suffer from that, though.
A link to the Past would be the best start. It's the pillar that made Zelda what it is today in my opinion... it was the first full blown Zelda that way and it's aging quite well. It would no doubt give you an idea and what to expect from all the Zelda games.

TP starts off f*cking boring. But after Abriter Grounds and forward the dungeon design is nothing short of excellent, but that slow ass start kills that game for me, and all in all the game is too long for it's own good. MM's my favorite among the group because of the structure of the game, the side quests, and the themes the game touches on. A darker take on Zelda done the way it should be.jg4xchamp
I stopped playing TP right before Fire Temple's boss.. sold it for 20$ and never looked back, never tried to get back into it again. I originally planned to get into it but just said "f*ck it" and waited for SS, which just turned out to be more zelda with nothing too new/different or exciting so I sold that too, along with my Wii.
Majoras Mask was my first video game (got into gaming really late) and boy did I love it, loved it even more after playing other Zelda titles and seeing how MM differentiated itself from the others, I wish more Nintendo franchises would take that dark turn, specifically Pokemon, which I wish Gamefreak would take some notes from Pokemon Identity, a modded Firered that handled dark Pokemon perfectly.
I don't know how Nintendo managed to frighten an 18 year old with a moon, but god damn they succeeded. Then again, I'm French, I'd give up my house out of fear if Mormons knocked on my door.

Yeah if you stuck with it the game gets a lot better, but I'm big on saying a game shouldn't make me wait till it gets good. so yeah not gonna apologize for that game. Not a big fan of SS Metroid Prime 1 and 2 are excellent games that differentiate themselves nicely from Nintendo's traditional lineup. Main story in both games is pathetic, but the way it's told is quite clever and entirely something that can't be duplicated outside of a videogame. Plus atmosphere for days.[QUOTE="Slashless"][QUOTE="jg4xchamp"]Agreed on soundtrack, and I can buy into the idea WW is the best from an exploration standpoint on just because how much more lively that overworld was. There isn't a 'proper' story because there isn't a narrator or cutscenes, all you know is that you were sent there from something, and from scans/eventual dialogues (with luminoth in MP 2) you gather more information.

The story is bare bones and hardly interesting in any real sense. The excellence of it comes entirely from the way it's told. You being in this isolated environment, scanning everything, and having to put the pieces of the puzzle together yourself. The actual plot isn't anything worth mentioning.[QUOTE="mems_1224"][QUOTE="Slashless"]you spelled Link to the Past wrong LttP isn't even the best 2D zelda based entirely on how much the combat is dated due to the limited reach. Link's Awakening now that game is legit. seriously? you're going to talk bad about LTTP's combat and then bring up Links awakening where you spend more time switching between items than you do playing the game? :P link's awakening is fine, but LTTP is still the best game ever made IMOPlay the best one, Wind Waker.

If you have a 3DS, I'd probably say try out Ocarina of Time. If you don't have a 3DS, but have a Wii/GC, check out either the Wind Waker (probably the best one to start with, as it's easier than the others, and has a lot of charm in it's visuals), or Twilight Princess. TP is a really long, epic adventure. I personally would suggest that you just skip Skyward Sword completely, as for me it was by far the weakest game IMO (I would go so far as to say it's a weak game in general, not just going by the standards of the series).
Wind Waker, Ocarina 3D remake, or Twilight Princess for sure. Skyward Sword is amazing but might not be the best place to start. I'd say play one of these first then do SS second or third.
Wind Waker or A Link To The Past seem like the best place to "start".
Hell go ahead and play Skyward Sword if u really want.
