If you played System Shock 2 you would know that it is the best FPS of all time.

Yes that is true, in future if i play todays games i will feel like "wow how could i think this was good", games get better and better. If i want play a shooter it is no way in hell i go back and play Quake1 when i can play Modern warfare2 today for an example. I did like Quake1..but not anymore.

Skittles_McGee

Not in all areas. Sure graphics get better, but some games get casualized (Not a bad thing if they're still fun but it's worse than when they used to be filled with depth) Stories have generally been getting worse as well.

I'd disagree. He is correct on that point. Games are evolving. Stories too. I wouldn't really say games were deeper back in the "old days" either.

Are we talking about stories here? Because I can come up with a huge list of games with deeper stories than today's games. :P

If we're talking about gameplay, some games are evolving while others are being stripped of parts.

Unless you played it back in the days and fell in love with it, it is trash today. All old games is trash, people play old games because of nostalgia but to all other that didnt play them when they came it is pure garbage.

aroxx_ab

You know, I hate gamers who dislike new games and only play old games because its "cool". Nostalgia is silly. But being on the complete opposite side of that spectrum isn't exactly better. Its just another kind of elitism.

I don't hate any1 because their opinion/taste in games, i don't play games to be "cool"...hey i even own a Wii and that is so far from cool you can get. I don't see the point in dig up and waste time with old inferior games when it is more new and better games. So my opinion is "elitsism"- thinking?.. hmm ok

Your definition of a "superior game" is better graphics. Hell, I'd argue that the gameplay of Modern Warfare 2 is much less developed than that of System Shock 2

Respect the classics, that's all I can say. Go ahead and play new games exclusively, it doesn't bother me, but I'll tell you; games like SS2, Quake and Planescape did more for the game industry than you'll ever know.

It may not be the best FPS ever, but it's clearly better than both Bioshock 1 and 2, which is pretty sad IMO.

No your opinion discredits games that are arguably better than 'new' games (which mind you do come at the influence of those before them). But hey you don't change their quality, so there isn't a problem, whatever the flavor of the month is classics stand the test of time.

I think the game was great, definantly amazing when I played it. I don't know if it's the best all time. It's not my favorite of all time. But I Would say it be in my top 10, top 5.

BULL CRAP

bullcrap. BULL CRAP to the highest power.

All of the clas-sics be it JRPG, WRPG(althoguh i love planescape), FPS, Action, what ever the hell were not that deep from a narrative standpoint. Hell games aren't even that deep now. Gaming as a source for storytelling has been laughable at best. The point and clich adventure genre is the only genre I would ever even consider giving that credit to.

For every BIG LIST GAME. you can run throught that entire list and fine what cliches it has, what plot holes, how underdeveloped certain aspects are, yada yada yada. Sure the exceptional games do hold up very well, but HELL TO THE NO on the stories got worse. The whole medium has a long way to go before any era of gaming can be truly remembered for it's Stories.

But hey one man's pretention is another man's genius.

^^that does not mean I think there aren't games with interesting stories, it just means That I don't think any one era of gaming was really better than the other. I think writers have been more serious as time has gone on, and I think all around they've done better jobs across the board as time has gone on. The depth has by no means been lost in the stories. For too many of the "clas-sics" it was rarely if ever there in the first place.

I'm not saying a particular era can be truly remembered for it's stories, it's true video games are games first and stories second. What I am saying is that there are more games with better stories in the past gens than there are this gen. (That might not be saying much to you :P) Of course we're both probably thinking of different games. I'm thinking more in the lines of Ultima IV and Bard's Tale

yeah a select handful do it better, but overall? hell no if anything the industry took a massive step forward in that departmnet across the board. Have we had a bard's tale?(never played ultima, thought it was a boring series). But overall? no I would say we haven't taken a step back by anymeans. I do think the overuse of cinematics to tell stories is annoying, but lately they seem to be willing to be less annoying with those.

Gameplay video

By the people who made Bioshock. Except System Shock 2 is sooooo much better.

Hint: It's better than Killzone 2.

Fried_Shrimp
Half Life 1/2, Stalker, ect.

Seriously, they'r good games but inferior to System Shock 2.

Pity that SS2 has pretty shoddy graphics. Even when it was released the character models looked incredibly poor. Also the way a pistol would degrade after a few shots got really annoying. I'm glad that element didn't make it into bioshiock. Epic twist though, so epic they pretty much copy pasta'd it into Bioshock. Good game but HL2 is better than it, among other FPS'

I do agree that with all the technological advancements that we have today, narrating a story has improved dramatically (I'm looking at you Heavy Rain) I just hope that the occasional gem of a game with a fantastic story doesn't eventually fade away.

I'm not even talking tech(al though thats a given) writing overall plots characters themes Originality is lacking, but hey it is what it is.

I'm not saying there aren't games with better narratives from previous gens. Just that as a whole, we've gotten better not worse in the story department.

As an overall game yes it is one of the best.

As an FPS it is piss poor imo, the 'shooting' wasnt the core point of the game.

Best FPS of all time is probably Half-Life

I'd play it given the chance... Have wanted to play it since before I knew what BioShock was... Alas I have never been able to get a copy at a reasonable price. :(

God, I always wanted to play that game, but never got a chance to get my hands on it (I wish Steam could get the rights to this game). I've heard many great things about it.

I wouldn't call it FPS, more like first person RPG. Otherwise, it's among the best games out there. BTW Dead Space reminded me quite a lot of SS2.

I just recently played it for the first time a few months back.

I was surprised by how well the atmosphere held up today. The story was good. Shodan's "performance" is quite possibly onE of the most memorable and epic ones I ever heard from a game. "Look at you, hacker" is so awesome it's a Bioshock 2 achievement.

That being said the ending was piss poor. Worse then the ending of Bioshock. 10 second crappy cutscene, then the WTF She's still alive. Bam. credits.

I also couldn't stand the weapon degradation. Those future guns sure did break easy. I was always using the power that could stop the gun degradation.

I did like the way you "built" your character, and the way the you could choose level and charge your powers.

The gun play was less then steller, even compared to it's contemporaries. If the game hadn't been so very atmospheric with a memorable story and antagonist I wouldn't have bothered with it.

I hate the term "dumbing down" being synonymous with making more accesible. For all intents and purposes System Shock 2 was NOT a blockbuster. Ken Levine and company loved the game, but knew what did not resonate with gamers. That was the overcomplicated inventory managmenet, and the gun degradtion and poor way of switching powers, etc. The UI if you will. Overcomplicated and cumbersome isn't more difficult or rewarding. It's just annoying. Even if it is "deeper", it to me wasn't fun.

All of that was fixed in Bioshock, and though that game isn't "horror", the Atmosphere is also very very well done. The story is almost as good. The gunplay/powers are far better.

SS2 paved the way no doubt, but I can't be arsed to say I liked it better then Bioshock. Except for maybe Shodan. Perhaps if I played it at release I would feel different. The games a classi( no doubt. But it's not my favorite FPS.

Yeah, I agree it was a Fantastic game, it kills all shooters on the Wii, as well as PS3 and Xbox.:P

Too bad it needed to be dumbed down for consoles to get the sales up...but that worked.

Same thing happened to the Deus Ex franchise.

SolidTy

Now we're talking! However, I think that System Shock 1 was a lot more groundbreaking game for its time than System Shock 2. Shame that so few people played it. It's still influential up to this day.

P.S. Why do I always get HTML errors when quoting you? :?

Err....No, no it isn't in fact if you look at my XFire you'll see I'm playing BioShock 2 also. I don't know where you're getting off like that, but what I meant was; Don't bash the classics, some people won't even take a second look at them because they are "Old" and thus somehow inferior to new games which isn't true at all, and like you I play both old and new, any real gamer does.
