I've always thought XBL was worth it, even to this day. PSN does the job just fine though.racing1750If PSN does the job fine for free, how can you say XBL is worth any fee ... that seems like a contradiction to me.

It's not disingenuous- both PC gaming and PS3 offer online gaming without any of those hassles for free. You speak as if the choice is a paid service like Live or what you described. Beating up on a strawman is easy, but it doesn't win debates.LongZhiZiThat argument was designed to counter those who continue to claim they "just want to play online for free" and "don't care for any of those features." Which is not true, because Nintendo Wi-Fi meets that criteria but they won't accept it. Typing in IP addresses would meet that criteria but they won't accept it either. If Microsoft announced tomorrow that they were coming out with a FREE way to play Xbox 360 games online through a new service that worked just like Nintendo Wi-Fi, the same people who claim they "just want to play online for FREE" would reject it.
The point is they do care for those features. They do want the rich features Xbox Live offers. They just don't want to pay for them. But to say so outright would put into stark relief just how cheap they are, so they have to lie and say they "just want to play online" and "don't care for any of those features."
PSN is the only real competitor Xbox Live has. It's free, which is fine, and it satisfies those people who claim they "just want to play online" while still giving them a few of the features they really want from an online game service. But let's stop this ridiculous argument that people "just want to play online." They want more than that, they just don't want to pay for it.

... one look at the Xbox Engineering Blog should (hopefully) change your mind. It'll give you a glimpse of just how complicated and feature-rich Xbox Live truly is.
Of course, some people will dismiss it out of hand. Those people are fanboys and should be ignored. ;)

why is it because i don't think it's worth $50 a year im a fanboy?
That's not what I said. I said fanboys would dismiss the Engineering Blog out of hand. Which you did. Congratulations. It gives an idea of the high attention to detail Microsoft has paid to every aspect of Xbox Live. The kind of detail and care one can simply cannot expect from a free service. So where exactly in those walls of text will I find something that differentiates XBL from PSN sufficiently enough to justify the $50 yearly fee? As a consumer, I experience no difference between the end products. When I compare XBL to PSN, I find that I get nothing more from XBL to justify the price I pay for it. The fact is that the only reason I would consider paying is to play with friends and family who game on XBL.

I did pay for Xbox live and didnt use any of those features I just played online games my Xbox got the red rings and I dont care to get it fixed so I'm just sticking with my PS3 honestly I seem to get less lag from games on PS3.Er...think has nothingto do with it, it's not worth it. Every other major gaming platform out there let's you play online for free. Don't try to argue, it's impossible to win.

I bought a TV to watch multiple TV shows.... I buy a video game system to play video games not to use Netflix I do watch blu ray movies but other than that I just play games and online games.... I pay a monthly fee because their are shows I want to watch and I'm paying for something I want now it's true that I dont watch all the shows that are on my TV programming but I HAVE to pay for it it doesnt mean I want to pay.... With Xbox live I JUST want to play Online games nothing and use a mic nothing more..... Now I also use the internet browser on PS3 and play online games for free but I do nothing other than that... It's not worth the money for me $10 wouldnt be worth it for live bc just for me to use things like Netflix I still have to pay other fees..

guess you dont live in the UK..One word that can actually stand up to that statement to an extent would be Freeview.Gives you the core "digital" channels and its a one off buy the box and off you go.
Same game on three different systems.
Roughly (considering the PC) the same price on release.
The major difference is: On one you have to pay a yearly fee to access the online features of that product (for a year) - otherwise a portion of the game is inaccessible.
So in short Gold does a nice job of holding game content hostage, simple really.
While Live is better than PSN, Gold is far from justified. It is a ripoff simple as that, people can argue about server costs, however ultimately these costs fall on anyone hosting their own network, which is kept afloat from the huge profits of digital distribution royalties (ads to insult how many console games rely on client hosts).
But hey Microsoft knows they can take advantage of the consumer with an unnecessary subscription fee and unfortunately there is nothing 360 gamers can do about it, aside from stop gaming online. No options, nothing. Its Microsoft's closed network, they are free to abuse it as they please, and the consumer is willing to pay to play online - hell I did.
Cable shows content free to air doesn't, that network finances - be it original new shows with a size able budget behind them, recent films from the cinema, or extra sport and news coverage. The network keeps this 'exclusive' content dense enough to try and justify the subscription. If an antenna lets you watch TV for free, how can you say cable TV is worth any fee... that seems like a contradiction to me.

If you think XBL Gold isn't worth it... You have no friends!Hahadouken
Actually, someone with actual friends (Like me) would be out with their friends so much, they wouldn't play video games with them online.
And I have only played online with my PS3 around 5 times (Had it for about 6 months), so there is no need for me to pay for online. I couldn't ask for anything more than PSN.
TC why convince people to think Live GOLD is worth it. I dont debate this anymore if they love the free service more power to them. I just go into a thread that tells me if i spend money on Gold then i am being ripped off and go in on them. But they have PSN great i have both and use both i dont like beating a dead horse so just leave it alone. Its a debate that you cant win no matter how hard you try cause people will never give in to what you think is worth it to you.

That's a faulty analogy because cable offers more channels than the antenna. The online play offered by PSN matches or exceeds that of XBL, and ITS THE FREE SERVICE. On XBL, even big name exclusives like Halo and Gears don't have dedicated servers. Resistance 1 and 2 offer online play on completely lag-free dedicated servers, and with more people per match than any game you can play on XBL. Uncharted 2 offers the best graphics in a online shooter on consoles, and even though it doesn't have dedicated servers I get very minimal lag. I play Halo 3 all the time at my cousin's house, and I don't see any difference in terms of lag between PSN and XBL in it's p2p online play. So if anything, to use your analogy, playing online with PSN = watching cable TV for free, and paying to play online with XBL = paying to watch regular antenna TV.Please Log In to post.
