IGN Destiny Review

Simplistic “it’s like X mixed with Y” comparisons don’t really add up when attempting to explain what Destiny is, or why it’s worth playing. It borrows from many well-established gaming destinations, but the climate of each is wildly different, and often incompatible. It’s a complex production that boils down simply to this: Destiny is a mechanically excellent, visually evocative FPS housed within an under-developed RPG framework. The endgame might hook you for the long haul once you fully understand it, but Destiny is ultimately unable to be all the different games it’s trying so hard to be.

Destiny looks and plays wonderfully, but too many of the other promises it makes get left unfulfilled.

• Good gear game

Bad

• Minimal story
• Some weak RPG elements

Its not visually stunning at all. yes, the art direction is great but the engine used is bleh so wouldn't go as far as saying 'stunning'. Agree on most everything else tho. For the amount of content this game currently has, i think a price point of $49.99 would've been spot on but instead its the insane $69.99...

Probably just comes down to your definition of "stunning" but every review I've read has commented on how good looking Destiny is and from my time with it I would definitely agree Destiny is a looker.

I've been wondering how their review was gonna be.

Gametrailers game it an 8, which is really low score from them cuz you know they get paid for good scores and generally hype every major game to the heavens.

Backgrounds do certainly look good and even stunning in some places but up close its nowhere near amazing.

I'm just guessing they wanted to wait for the average metascore and try to match it the best they can. Also, the video he mentions a lot of negatives. Dunno how a 7.8 came out from all the negativity he said.

Wait, what? This game actually costs $70?

Purported to be so much more and fell far short. The reason for it is still quite possibly that Activision/Bungie withheld a good portion of the content in order to maximize their earnings off of post-launch DLC, but if so it appears a misguided approach.

Best case scenario anymore is to think of Destiny like AC. First one was riddled with detracting bugs/issues, but laid the groundwork for a superior sequel. We'll see if there's any desire left for such a thing as time goes by.

lol yeah, its not often they do honest reviews for majorly hyped games they spend a ton of time themselves hyping and advertising for. Everyone is so used to big and highly anticipated games to get 9/10 at IGN is really odd when they dont give a big budget game a 9.

everyone knows thats exactly wat is happening/gonna happen. And thats why alot of people are upset, cuz its obvious that they held back content so that they can release it periodically and say, "hey look how good we support our community, we are always coming out with new content and events for the community to play."

The only good thing Destiny has going for is that Bungie seems 1000% committed to supporting and expanding the multiplayer experience for years to come. And thats great, but not when the game sucks now.

Im pretty sure Destiny will be 50x better and have 50x more content in the next 2-3 years, but who cares by then?

Where i live it was almost $90 with taxes... this 69.99 price tag is ridiculous.

For even IGN to not give at least an 8 to such a hyped "AAA" title you can tell this game is far from what was cracked up to be.

Good review indeed. I gave it a 7 in my review, but anything between 7 and 8 seems fair for this game.

Gamespot's 6 was too low.

I gave it an 8, its a pretty good game, people just expecting too much. Rightfully so, Bungie gave us alot of fouls hope.

imo overall game scores are too high, i think standarts should be higher and giving a 6 on a 'not bad' game should be ok, but they give 6 to really bad games

Yea, you have no credibility. It's not the best looking game, but it looks very good and has big maps and throws in a dozen enemies chasing you. To say it looks like shit, shows that you just aren't a serious person.

I'm quite glad I didn't end up buying this.

@R3FURBISHED: I agreed with almost everything in the review, but I would have given it an 8/10.

Game shouldn't have any RPG elements to begin with. Developers need to stop shoving that crap into games.

All I know is that I am having fun with the game and at the end of the day that is all that matters. I take each review that people make with a grain of salt.

I'm personally giving Destiny an 8/10.

The story isn't very fleshed out, even after you read the Grimore on Bungie.net, but the game is still a lot of fun when you're playing with friends.

Me, too. I think it would kind of suck playing by yourself. But, yeah, with friends it puts it over that line.

I also agree with IGN's review, Bungie over promised and under delivered. I'm still enjoying it myself, but I haven't had to farm or grind yet to advance so the repetition hasn't set in. I just hit level 15 and haven't even done the first story mission on Venus yet. I'm not going to spend hours standing in one area killing zombies or whatever else people are doing to farm.

I heard the strike missions are just as effective as the boring farming techniques, so I did the strike mission on the moon last night (for my first time). I ended up getting two awesome random partners through matchmaking and had a blast on that level, but I don't really want to do that over and over again either.

The combat though is AAAA tier for sure. I'm also finding that weapon drops and rewards are forcing me to go outside of my normal comfort zone. In Halo I usually stick with the battle rifle/DMR (I prefer to engage the enemies at mid to long range and go for headshots). In Destiny I'm switching over to whichever the best primary I have at the moment and it is keeping the combat more refreshing.

Sorry for the long winded post.

By not giving into how people look at modern review scores I would give the game a 6.5/10.

I love that moment just after having completed a level 22 strike mission, lost in celebratory dance, when the screen fades to black and a wonderfully cold message on the bottom right hand corner of your TV alerts you to the fact that you have just lost connection to their server.

When 9GN doesn't give the most hyped game of the year a 9+/10, you know it's only halfway decent.

It isn't as bad as the scores make it look, maybe (at least the 6 from GameSpot), but I don't find anything that was said by either review that I categorically disagree with. I went in myself sort of expecting these outcomes after spending a decent amount of time in the alpha and beta. My purchase was influenced mostly by friends of mine getting the game, but I'm more interested in where Destiny goes in the long-term more so than what it offers today to be completely honest.

Users here think it's cool to hate on popular games, that's all.

It doesn't look stunning. I haven't seen anything on next gen that has truly wowed me, but Destiny especially just looked bland.

It was hyped to be the next greatest thing since sliced bread. Some new revolution in gaming that made all other gaming look like utter shit.

It turned out that it's just another game.

That's not saying it's "bad", it's saying it didn't meet expectations.

That says more about your friends than the game.

What I mean by that is it's the group of people you are playing with that makes the game fun, not actually the game itself. It doesn't suddenly become less repetitive, or its bosses less spongy and lame, or its pvp less of a boring grind, or any of that. It's not like it's a Left 4 Dead or Killing Floor scenario where there are design decisions in place that make the coop a substantial part of the experience, it's more like coop in any other shooter, and if we're being honest anything is fun with the right group of people.

when Bribegn gives 7.8 for a massive release like this, this means the game really suck

The water effects are anything but visually stunning. Everything else looks great though.
