With that statement? I laugh at it. The only reason they can get away with it is because the Wii technically launched two days later.

Disagree.

More successful than the PS2 and PS1? Maybe.

Than any other system in existence? Hell no.

He is probably referring to how many they have sold (shipped) up to this point. He might be right on that one.

xbox 360, especially in Japan, where it has already sold more in 2 months than the 360 has in 1 year. We'll see about the euro launch soon

What do you really expect a PR person to say when they are getting grilled ? Our launch window lineup sucks compared to the ps2s ? He seems confident about where they are at right now.

seriously, who gives a damn about what execs say?

even if Kutaragi slaps my mother, Bill Gates punches my father and Miyamoto bash my grandmother, I will still buy a PlayStation, I will still use Windows OS and I will still play my DS.

its just stupid fanboys that comments way to personal.

in words of Phil Harrison, "I couldn't care less".

Statistically speaking, he's a liar. In it's first month in North America the PS3 sold 226,000 units. The PS2 sold 461,500 units. In it's first four weeks in Japan the PS3 sold 199,500 units. The PS2 sold 1,085,750 units. Quite a difference, wouldn't you say?

I don't understand how it is a bold-faced lie. There was a lot of negativety towards the ps2 launch as well. The dreamcast did this or that. The launch games were meh. They didn't make enough for the launch , especially around the holiday in NA.

I think it is smart for him to stay confident and show that the ps3 is doing at least as well as the ps1 and ps2 did back then to put the best possible light on things. Now is not a time to show weakness. I wouldn't expect any less from a PR guy. He did slip up on the last part and that is unfortunate but stuff happens. I don't think he really thought that one through.

This is probably how he sees things. We have more ps3s out there than ps2s in the same time period.People are enjoying free online gaming with games like Resistance and RR7. People are buying blu-ray movies. People are buying their downloadable offerings. People are using the web browser. People are installing linux. Yada yada yada.

How is it neither true or false?

Clearly there are measures by which the PS2 can be seen to have been far more successful at launch.

That is still objective and covers a lot of different things.

+ The ps2s were having technical problems and not reading games or breaking down. The ps3 isn't.
+ They have sold(shipped) more ps3s than the ps2 at this point
+Ā  Multimedia and functionality ? People are buying blu-ray movies , downloading demos , buying downloadable games , web browsing , playing games online , etc. (yada , yada , yada)

things that are about the same or debatable.

* negativety towards the brand on the internet.
* launch games , both meh. Resistance is the only game I wanted from either set of lineups.

Things the ps2 did better

- having higher demand as far as selling out everywhere at this point ( i suspect that has a lot to do with them getting more system out there , the ps1 was not as strong as the ps2 is now , higher price point , etc )

I don't really have a problem with him putting his own spin on things.

I had to look very hard to find something tangible , but from a PR position I don't have a problem with what he said overall. You are taking his boasts and exaggerations a little too literal.

I set the bar pretty low. Anything above a bold faced lie will do.

A bold faced lie would have been "We are outselling the Wii" Not "more successful than any previous launch objectively" If he said subjectively, it would have been completely fine - so I don't really see the need to grill him on something so insignificant. This is why I could never work in PR, people have a way of twisting your words around to make you seem like you have a hint of evil in you. (Any of you remember the incident where Sony's UK PR said something like "Well, the closing of E3 doesn't really effect us cause we're in europe, but thats not to say it was not an important and not to downplay it whatsoever" Fanboys lost it and said 'Sony doesn't care about E3").

How does he measure success, if the PS2 sold more than the PS3 did at launch? :? These PRs confuse me.... would the success be determined by the hype, media coverage, and lines waiting by HOPEFUL buyers to own the system? Or would hype be measured by sales numbers of software and hardware and attach ratio? Or maybe the increase of Blu-Ray sales thanks to PS3? ;)

There's really no way to get around OBJECTIVELY (meaning, from an outside standpoint) and ANY MEASURE (any possible way of measuring). It's pretty clear that the guy is a doof. The Tretton guy lied, too. He offered $1200 for every PS3 found. No way he's going to pay. There was probably small print saying that it would only count for those who were searching in Europe or something.

[QUOTE="cakeorrdeath"][QUOTE="Kinitari"] A bold faced lie would have been "We are outselling the Wii" Not "more successful than any previous launch objectively" If he said subjectively, it would have been completely fine - so I don't really see the need to grill him on something so insignificant. .

Objectively and Subjectively have virtually opposite meanings. You might as well add a not in there!

Well I understand that objective and subjective are near polar opposites, but people should just understand now adays that very little in this world is objective. And to expect the PR of a company to be objective is just a push too much to expect in my opinion. Just take everything they say with a grain of salt until it comes to important stuff, like video games. And even then, make sure you have some salt handy.

[QUOTE="cakeorrdeath"][QUOTE="Nike_Air"]You are taking his boasts and exaggerations a little too literal.

How should "objectively by any measure" be interpreted in your book then?

a figure of speech , an exaggeration of sorts.

He exaggerated that the PS3 was the most successful launch ever? If that's how you want it phrased it's fine by me. You should consider working in PR yourself.

There is a big difference between expecting a company to be objective and expecting them not to make false statements.
