Why are we pretending this is new? The rule of thumb is the review isn't supposed to come out until the game releases. However, exceptions can be made if the reviewer allows the editors to send out a review under the right circumstances. Here's the trick: The publisher wouldn't want an early review of a game that's gonna get a disappointing score.

9 times out of 10, the early review is a favorable one. Same thing as movies. If you don't give reviewers advanced screening, then that's a bad sign. As for the exclusive, it's more money for ign. Gamespot probably wouldn't give them such a score so sony would much rather take ign's services.

[QUOTE="mithrixx"][QUOTE="darthogre"] lol, maybe they are saying "how the heck can you review it if we didn't give you a final copy? If you did get a final copy how did you get it?" Gamespot by the way refuses to write reviews based on pre-release copies. They wait until the retail copy is available to do their reveiws. So don't fret, GS doesn't care about exclusive reviews lol.darthogre
That's not true. They reviewed Halo Wars before it was released.

Ok, and they have stated their policy is to not review the game until they get the retail copy. One game does not equal policy. The whole point of your rant was GS was somehow wronged.....well they were not because they would never do a review until they get a retail copy. I've seen them state this time and time again.

Maybe they got a retail copy pre-street-date. Some stores got the game about a week or so prior to street (with strict instructions to observe the date. Maybe GS got a retail copy in a similar manner with the understanding that it was intended for review.

[QUOTE="XanderZane"][QUOTE="mtradr43"]i doubt thats what happened, but if it is somehow, they certainly picked the right site, considering the massively overrate most games, especially ps3 games.Bread_or_Decide
I think IGN is partially owned by Sony anyways. Not even sure why they review XBox 360 and Wii games. They need to change their name to PlaystationOnly.com. At least their overrated scores for PS3 games would make sense then. They underrate every XBox 360 game and gave no awards for 360 games that obviously deserved it.

You do realize dvisions of these companies do not talk to each other. Sony games does not talk to Sony Movies and they don't talk to Sony Music. If Sony partially owns IGN I'm pretty sure their games division has no contact with them. Just the PR department I'm sure.

They have to talk to each other at some point--particularly Sony Pictures Entertainment, who does the TV shows (and probably does the TV spots as well). And what about games with tie-ins to Sony Pictures movies?

^^^ I never pay attention to IGN's reviews/scores. So many of their reviews are badly off. I might not agree with alot of GS's review scores but at least you know they are going to usually be tough on a game rather than trading scores for benefits like IGN have in the past (ie Pro Evo in-game advertising for good score for a crap game)

I agree, its more likely IGN gets lots of hits for having early review, Sony get a soft review and some hype. Good for both of them, rather than an insideous Sony conspiracy.

I'm sure InFamous was grossly overrated by IGN. However I'm sure it's still a great game.. I'll wait and see what GS has to say.

I'm don't know what negotiations are made, I'm guessing the game developer, company, publisher, etc. will send reviewers a copy of the game but sometimes they can choose who they will send it to first. And I think it would be wise to send it to a review site that is very popular. It's not just a review but also an opportunity to advertise the game to a larger audience. I don't think getting the review early is the problem but getting the product overrated is.

Thats why

IGN is divided by console. Each console section is run by fanboys for said console. The PS3 portion is Pro sony. The 360 portion is Pro Microsoft. The Wii portion is Pro Nintendo.

This seems to be a tin foil hat area.

Description of the advantages of said headwear, can be found here.

Tin foil hats and paranoia

The reasons for their use include the supposed prevention of perceived harassment from governments, spies or paranormal beings. These draw on the stereotypical images of mind control operating by ESP or technological means, like microwave radiation. Belief in the effectiveness of tin foil hats is popularly associated with paranoia or mental illness.

Because some devs have good relations with a certain site/publication(s), and time to time they send a copy to that site(s) for an exclusive review. You can argue there are interests involved, but, there again, you can say the same thing about in essence every review.

Actually no. Its just I know the personalitys of the reviewers better then any other review site. I listen to the podcast and it gives me a taste of thier personality. So when I see or read a review from a certain person I can kinda see where they are coming from. There are times I disagree or agree with them, but I always take thier opinion to mind.

I dont know why it is so hard for some to accept that the PS3 is getting good games and more of them to boot. Maybe they just dont like to be proven wrong and are still clinging to the idea that it is only a blu ray player. But when PS3 exclusives get a low score, it somehow becomes a legit score?

Well yall better get used it as more exclusives will hit later on this year.

What about GS, they have a Launch Center dedicated to Infamous? Sony paying them too? I am sure they are in these rough economic times and as well as Sony losing money?

IGN is the most reliable review source for me. GS tends to be opinionated, like when they complain about mini-games being in a game. What?! There has to be something to cut up the action or it'll get dull and repetitive.

Of course, it depends on the game. But some games work great when you have several things to do other than a huge focus on one gameplay type. Besides, mini-games can be fun and amusing.;)

Sony offers an exclusive review and information for a certain amount, IGN accepts. Done. Thats how business works.

Anyway there are other reviews than IGN out there right?

Not exactly exclusive.

The same people who claim these are the ones reading IGN's columns everyday...this is clearly just a case of damage controlbecause an exclusive got good reviews. IGN's always have had earlier reviews than GS so nothing special here. Just because Infamous got AAA at IGN and suddenly it's Pro-Sony? Don't make me laugh.
