[QUOTE="XanderZane"]

[QUOTE="spike6566"] well lets see MGS 4 sold 4mill and LBP sold 1.5mill. so what is your point again?spike6566

Neither of those games sold as many copies as Gears of War 2. It sold over 1.5 million copies it's first week. lol!!That's his point. More people were interested in Gears of War 2, then MGS IV or LBP combined. Which makes the awards seem a little tainted.

but mgs4 sold 3mil in the first month. so i guess tht means sales are bad to you?

Gears of War 2 transcended two million in three days.

It doesn't deserve to be on the list. The online is broken. GeOW2 and R2 are in the same bag, neither should be on a GOTY list if both aren't.

EDIT: And neither deserve to win.Burnsmiesta
And MGS4's online is just as broken, yet it's on there.

Better than Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots' sales.

Well there we have it. GEOW 2 couldnt make it on GS now it cant make it on IGN. looks like 2 exclusive PS3 games and the rest multi plats. Maybe next year 360 exclusive will actually make the list. any how enjoy. spike6566

Strange, i though all worst games of 2008 got nominated (MGS4, LBP, Gears 2 that is)

The last 360 game i would like to see nominated is Gears 2, given Fable 2, Banjo 3, Lost Odyssey, Tales etc are 1000x better games for me than the overhyped, ovescored, linear and last gen in gameplay and level design Gears 2, MGS4, LBP etc

MGS4's online is unbalanced and the SP controls don't transition to online very well. The only glitches in gears of war 2 are silly ones, and you can kill the person doing them easily if you don't suck at the game.

I guess I'll have to take solace in the fact that my console is not stagnating in last place.

I'll wipe my tears with the printout of the latest NPD figures...sniff.

I think every game on the nominees list innovates in some form or another. Gears 2 didn't really reinvent itself or even up the ante on the third person genre. Its a great game, simple as that, but not one of the best of the year. Not in a year where LBP, MGS4, Fall out 3, GTAIV and L4D all broke ground in their respective genres. Whether it was the play-create-share philosophy of LBP, the octocam in MGS4, the immense lived in worlds of FO3 or GTAIV, and the insanely fun multiplayer in L4D. Theirs just no room for "good but nothing new". Gears unfortunately falls into that category. Its good...sometimes even great...but a little too complacent with taking zero risks. Unless that risk is crappy online multiplayer.

Neither did MGS4. How did it reinvent itself and up the ante on the third person/stealth genre? Oh yeh, it didn't. The control scheme is different, that's it.

MGS4 sold 4 million? While thats definitely a nice number for a PS3 game, thats SINCE JUNE. Gears 2 has done that in 2 months. I also wouldnt use LBP as a highpoint. Everyone knows that game did not sell anywhere near what it was expected to... even I was shocked by it.

yea but mgs4 sold roughly 3 million of that in its first month

Link? Because the last time I checked, no console exclusive has topped Halo 3's sales on the 360 for its first month, or first day.

Not true. Octocam alone is a revelation. Took away all the tedious manual camo you had to do in MGS3. The action set pieces were the best in the series and with a seamless cut from cinema to in-game you were always in the moment when you went into the action. The limitless options of how to mess with soldiers and thier many varied reactions are a real step for smart A.I. Not to mention the huge war torn environments and your ability to interact (or not) with your surroundings in a meaningful way is also new for the stealth genre. When you earned the trust of the rebels you kept it for the whole game unless you kill one of their men.

Not only was that in MGS3, but just like in MGS3 the run and gun is pretty average compared to other TPS games and the stealth is average compared to other stealth games.

Clearly anyone who says it only changed the control scheme has never played the game or has no experience with the series. Just before Guns of the Patriots came out I replayed every Metal Gear game and MGS4 truly played like no other MG before it. Its the refinement and culmination of every idea in the series with a few dozen new ones thrown in to shake things up.

Octocamo just made the camo system much easier and on the go, you never had to collect any camo to help keep your camo index down, you just had to press against the wall. Nothing new here. Seamless cut to from cinema to in-game happened only a few times. That's nothing worth praising to begin with. Yeh, you could mess with soldiers in the past games. They barely give you anything new to use. I guess if you think the laughing, rage, fear, and whatever bullets were so amazing to use, then yeh that's the one new thing. You could just use the tranq gun to avoid any and all stealth. Other stealth games have been doing stealth better than MGS since MGS came out. The one point in the game that is forced stealth (ACT 3) was executed poorly and done much better in other stealth games. You never had to worry about running out of silencers because you could just buy more from drebin. You always had plenty of points. The whole gaining trust of the rebels was extremely shallow and not worth doing.

MGS3 did not allow you to run and gun. Heck some areas were littered with so many soldiers you'd never survive if you got caught. Average stealth? Chapter 3 is a love letter to the stealth genre and a nod to a scene in Metal Gear 2:Solid Snake. Chapter 1 and 2 puts Snake in environments he's never been in before with a level of detail never before seen in the series. The game responds to the player. The smarter you play it the more you get out of it.

What other stealth game this gen tops MGS4? The genre is nearly non existent right now so I really don't know what your comparing it too. Certainly not that OTHER game that may never even see the light of day this gen. Ya know...I just don't agree with your assessment of the game at all. And if the game was as average as you say then why did it win GOTY?

Their was just so much to discover in MGS4. So many toys to play with. You under rate its accomplishments almost criminally.

When you earned the trust of the rebels you kept it for the whole game unless you kill one of their men. Bread_or_Decide

Look at gamespot's reasoning. They loved the game's story, epic moments and "seamless transition into gameplay". Silly reasons like that is why it won.

[QUOTE="AAllxxjjnn"][QUOTE="Bread_or_Decide"] MGS3 did not allow you to run and gun. The smarter you play it the more you get out of it.Bread_or_Decide
And i obviously love playing smart, because Crysis rewards you in the same way and that's one of my favorite games. I addressed act III in my last post.

Their was just so much to discover in MGS4. So many toys to play with. You under rate its accomplishments almost criminally.

And yet so many others overrate it's 'accomplishments' criminally. What's my motivation for using such toys? It's not like it's more rewarding than just cutting the guys throat. I used a playboy once. And then shot everyone. And i felt like i would have had more fun sneaking up on them and cutting their throats or playing it as an action game, despite the, still, clunky controls and terrible cover system.

lol who cares no 360 games that were exclusives made the list. 360 has dominated over past years, who cares that it did a little worse in 08. and if you're a ps3 fanboy, open your eyes, the sales are absolute garbage compared to ps2 and sony is having hard time with the overrated hardware's price tag and is losing money for the first timem since 95.

Well as a long time fan MGS4 didn't dissapoint me. Your entitled to what you want to think. Seems like you don't like the series to begin with.

Ok, then we'll agree to disagree. I loved MGS when it came out and MGS3. MGS2 was ok.

[QUOTE="Burnsmiesta"]It doesn't deserve to be on the list. The online is broken. GeOW2 and R2 are in the same bag, neither should be on a GOTY list if both aren't.

EDIT: And neither deserve to win.AAllxxjjnn
And MGS4's online is just as broken, yet it's on there.

Good point. I suppose there was less of an expectation with MGS4s online as opposed to GeOW2s. I mean they did promise it was fixed but it seems worse than the original. That was the only thing I wanted for the sequel, a complete online experience.

[QUOTE="AAllxxjjnn"][QUOTE="Diviniuz"] Probably the worst line in Fallout 3 or maybe I just listened to it so much that it just annoying for me.GodofBigMacs

I just wanted to get a combo breaker. Both speeches or whatever are kinda lame.

No, The War has Changed one is actually great, especially with the commotion going on in the background, with your fellow militiamen getting shot down by PMC's like it's a cakewalk, just exemplifying how his speech is actually true. It greatly paints a picture of how nanotechnology has transformed our society, and was a perfect intro.

Anyway, I wrote down the speech after analyzing it on Youtube *ahem*

*cues MGS Love Theme*

War... has changed...

It's no longer about nations, ideologies, or ethnicity.

It's an endless series of proxy battles, fought by mercenaries, and machines.

War... and its consumption of life... has become a well-oiled machine...

War has changed...

ID-tagged soldiers carry ID-tagged weapons, use ID-tagged gear...

Nanomachines inside their bodies enhance and regulate their abilities.

Genetic control, information control, emotion control, battlefield control.

Everything is monitored, and kept under control.

War... has changed...

The age of deterrance... has become the age of control...

All in the name of averting catastrophe from weapons of mass destruction.

And he, who controls the battlefield, controls history.

War... has changed...

When the battlefield is under total control...

War... becomes routine...

Wow...MGS4 was awful

Thats because it was a decent single player campaign game thats it. Graphics were sub-par alittle better than the first. Sony always will and has produced the best games and its only going to get better. MS will never get a GOTY as long as Sony is around.

GeoW2 deserved to be on that list. Even though all that Epic did was - make the lighting a better and make the environments brighter - slap on a few texture layers on the character models - amp up the physics (biggest change in the whole game - tweak a few weapons But if its not broken why fix it ??? GeoW was awesome, GeoW2 is awesome. Im a cow but I have to admit that GeoW2 deserves to be on that list more than R2.

I disagree for 1 reason. R2 has the most revolutionary online play for a FPS to date, were as GOW2 is broken and has less options regarding online.

Wow...MGS4 was awful

I hope your kidding. MGS4 was one of the greatest games ive ever played not to mention the fact it destroyed any other game to date for overall graphics especially character models. Sounds to me like you are just trying to get under peoples skin with that comment.

[QUOTE="cuddlesofwar"][QUOTE="spike6566"]Well there we have it. GEOW 2 couldnt make it on GS now it cant make it on IGN. looks like 2 exclusive PS3 games and the rest multi plats. Maybe next year 360 exclusive will actually make the list. any how enjoy. http://bestof.ign.com/2008/spike6566
Who cares? It's already sold millions. there are millions of people enjoying it. Can the same be said for many PS3 exclusives? If winning a trivial award makes you sleep better and night then congrats.

well lets see MGS 4 sold 4mill and LBP sold 1.5mill. so what is your point again?

You are forgetting about the people enjoying it part. That is where the problems begin.

True, R2 online is deep and has many features but nothing beats shotguning a locust's head off or torque bowing a cantus in the face or even sniping a grinder in the face or even downing a person and putting a nade in his face, the fun is endless in GeoW. The fun factor in GeoW is unmatched. The only really fun part is when you double barrel shotgun someone and he turns into mush in R2.
