Confirmation of the abnormally high 3.8 million figure is impressive, but I say they still meant shipped.

Jesus. Do we have to have this bloody debate every single time ANY sales numbers are released? THERE IS NO POSSIBLE WAY TO ABSOLUTELY SAY HOW MANY CUSTOMERS BUY A PRODUCT FROM STORES. This is impossible. The best any company - whether Sony, Nintendo, or MS - can do is say how many they have sold to retailers from regional distribution centers. This number is the closest possible indicator of sales because retailers order stock on a regular basis and therefore, it is almost impossible to artifically inflate this number.
When companies talk about "shipped" vs "sold", they are talking about how many units they send from manufacturing to regional distribution (which can be inflated) vs how many they sold to retailers from regional distribution (which can't be inflated).
Not even NDP or any of those other surveyors know exactly how many customers have bought a product. It is all just educated guess work. The best indicator is when the companies themselves release their "sold" numbers.
Seriously people, this debate really needs to die.
