IGN's Review Scale Changes

You won't see another 7.9 on IGN.

After many long discussions (and really, this has been going on for years), we've decided to alter our review scale. From today forward, we will score games on a 20-point scale (meaning games score will be 7.0 or 7.5 or 8.0, etc.).

I'm glad they're changing it. I hate when IGN and GT give games an 8.9 or 7.9. I would like to see them or GS use a .25 scale though

Well now they can keep spamming 9.0s.

good. its more cleaner like this and you dont have to stress over a 0.1 score difference

You're not going to know unless you read the text though. Its a meaningless point honestly. Reviews are here to inform, 7.8 vs 7.9 tells me absolutely nothing.

That's my prefered scale. Honestly though even whole point scales are fine, the text should match the score, that's what I'm more interested in.

Why? Its much more logical honestly, the old way seemed more like they played darts to pick what score a game would get.

Laaaaaaammmeeeee. I like the good old days when a .1 difference could mean everything. IGN just had to go and pull a GS. :(

i guess i think .1 is too many nubers though honestly

Guess that leaves Gametrailers of the big sites that still use .1

9.0= Terribad

9.5= Meh

10= Master piece.

10 point scale/5 stars with halves is the way to go. 5 point scale like GB is pushing it.

That's the right way to score a game. There is really now way to tell the difference between a 9.1 and 8.9.

However, this alone won't make the reviews consistent. GS for exemple, use this scale but don't have a decent score policy.

I don't see that as worth all tghe other problems that come with a .1 scale. Just me though.

I agree with the following snippets 100%:

"the criticism lives within the text (which we hope you all read) as well as the discussions that occur after the review."

"A score is not the critical impression of a game. It's actually a benchmark so gamers can easily understand in one flash the overall quality of a game."

Too often gamers don't read the review, and just use the score as a basis for whether the game is good or not (usually in inane arguments). Honestly, I'd prefer review sites with no scoring system at all (number, stars, thumbs up/down, etc.). Just give us a review from 3 different people for each game, and I would be happy. I don't read reviews to find out if a game is good (or not), I read the reviews to determine if I will like the game.

.5 system doesnt mean nothing if you dont use it properly. ign will be giving out alot of 9s for every game now. gametrailers hav the best reviews out of every other site imo. they know how to use that .1 system properly

lol i had a feeling you would reply to my post. but to answer ur question i dont know tbh. its just personal preference. i never thought about it much.

Now it's a 3 point scale (9.0-9.5-10)
