I'm halfway thru LA Noire, does anyone else think this game is way overrated.
I was disappointed with it. It's fairly promising in the beginning, what with the noir look (the black and white benefits well) and classic setting, but the cases started to become way too tedious by the time you do that fetch quest in homicide, which, by the way, had set pieces that were so out of place for what it was going for. You end up looking at clues that have no relevance whatsoever to the case you're investigating. The interrogations were wildly inconsistent. It's so blatantly obvious when a character would be hiding something from you (squirming around, eyes wondering all over the place, etc.), and when you do doubt a character, it pretty much feels like you're accusing them of lying. Speaking of lying, I found it funny when you did accuse the suspect to be lying, you would insult them like they're scum, then you would have the option of just backing out, saying something like (and I'm paraphrasing here), "I'm sorry.. my mistake." The game just didn't have a coherent plot whatsoever. I was expecting a string of plot lines that strung together in noir-ish fashion, not individual cases that had no significance to a bigger picture. Sure, there were "twists," like that lousy affair plot-line, but they just felt like twists for the sole reason of having a twist. Also, that ending really stunk..
You end up not playing as the main character for a couple of missions, then all of a sudden they throw him in there at the end in a brief moment in the sewer. You could just tell the developers were going for a powerful moment, but it just did not work. Him looking up and uttering a word that escapes my mind did nothing for me.
I suppose it could be because of my hype for the game prior to it's release, but I just found way too many problems with the game. Fun in the beginning, then just dropping the ball a few cases later.

lol, if you don't think the game strung cases together to the very end then you really werent paying much attention lol. almost everything in the game ended up connected to each other in one way or another if you looked at it right...and the affair part i wouldn't even consider a twist. so yea, i don't really agree with ur post at all...

really poor game. it feels like an interactive movie without a story all you do is - tap A everywhere at crime scene, talk to someone, 30 second chase scene, interrogate (dont have evidence? dont pick lie. is he rolling his eyes around the room nervously? pick doubt.) then arrest. thats all there is to the game. its bad

Really? Every case in homicide, arson and vice all came together for a coherent story? Care to explain how those cases strung together?

The game never really peaked my interest so I probably won't end up purchasing the game... or renting it for that matter. After RDR I have lost some faith in Rockstar games. I enjoyed GTAIV though. Great game.

GTAIV was awesome
RDR was meh
Midnight Club LA was pure crap
L.A Noire looks to be repetitive and not worth my time

i'm not going to go through the whole game since its 30 hours long and 21 cases. but on Cole's first day as a detective they made a point of mentioning the plans for making the highway through the city...didnt the last few cases end up all being tied to the making of the highway? or how Kelso's boss was also a pedophile and how that tied into an earlier traffic case. if you really paid attention and understood you'd see how every case was tied into other cases from a small degree to a large all the way through the game in one way or another. i really appreciate the story in this game...it was very well done. nothing was really pointless(in the main story).

I've found all of Rockstar's work this gen to be very overrated, so I'm not surprised. If I play it, I am going in with low expectations.-RocBoys9489-

This guy can read my mind. RDR is wicked overrated, so I'm not expecting a whole lot from LA Noire.

It isn't as good as RDR, gameplay or storywise, and Cole Phelps as a protagonist is a lot less likeable and relateable than John Marston.

Everyone could connect with Marston on some level because he made so many mistakes in his life, and he legitimately felt bad for most of them, but there was also that apathy we all have a little bit of.

Additionally, his personality is more grounded by the time we see him, and from what I've played through LA Noire, Phelps was basically a smarmy douche while he was in the Army.

i dunno, same happened with GTA4 for me. was cool and fun in the begining, then i lost all interest about half way through and never finished. The "open world" crime saga has been done to DEATH for me. Ive always loved gta's but nothing has felt new or cool in a long time. The fact that they made La Noire about solving crimes didnt help me much. Wondering what rockstar will do next. RDR was interesting and cool, but still just the "take this there/pick this up/kill this guy" obviously with some others thrown in, but it get sooo repetitive its not even funny. Im just soooooooooooo sick of how many game ending bugs there are in ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL GTA games. and i love how reviewers and gamer alike always turn a blind eye to them, no matter how often or bad they are. Do you know how many times ive had to reload in rdr or gta4 because of getting stuck?? or the "guy you need to kill" not showing up. or (fill in the blank)

I think it's the finest release so far this year, though I get what you mean. It does suffer some repetitive moments particularly in homicide.

Please, point to where in this thread someone said that. I'd love to see it. I was expecting an excellent game, not this.

It deserves the score it got here. Nice change of pace from the usual, hoping for a sequel.

I was disappointed overall. Really repetitive and poorly executed. There are things that could have been a lot better with only minimal effort and there are even things that are not in the game that had me scratching my head in a "its 2011, why can't i do that in this game?" type of way.

The lack of much continuity didn't help either. The game is chock full of characters that are impossible to like or relate to or care about.

If you remove the facial animations which are even flawed themselves, what you have is a drop dead average game at best. Totally undeserving of anything more than 6's and 7's imo.

Nope, i actually made sure i wasn't buying another GTA before i got my hopes up, i researched the gameplay and found it to be slow paced, i knew the cases would be repetitive in that you find a dead body, get some clues and find the killer, rinse and repeat but because i knew this i didn't go making threads about how i was letdown by the gameplay and i didn't think "Oh Rockstar MUST BUY!!".

what was funny is that what motivated me to finish it was getting it back to gamefly in time to not miss the infamous 2 release not to see the ending because at about the halfway point i just didn't care anymore.

is it a good game? yes it's good and i am glad to see it be popular and sell well but it is not some masterpiece or anything which is what the majority of revews make it out to be.

i do think the face tech is pretty amazing though i would not mind that becoming a standard tool kit like phys-x or havok or whatever.

That is just absurd. First off the game didn't play like a interactive movie (I'm guessing you don't know what an IM actually plays like?) and the game does have a story. You're not just sloving random cases that do not tie together.

I think its a really good game. Its unique and different.

I need a break from all of these games that are exactly the same.
