OK the DS3 gets wayyy tooo much hate so i'm going to debunk some common myths:

FIRSTLY: L2 + R2Yes... your fingers will slip off them...

IF YOUR HANDS ARE MARINADED IN OIL!

These things have a damn thing called "TEXTURE" on them so that there is a level of GRIP on the buttons. They only need a light squeeze, so if your fingers slip off the buttons... GO WASH YOUR GREASY HANDS AND DRY THEM WITH A TOWELL... SERIOUSLY.

SECONDLY: AnaloguesThey are CLOSE TOGETHER for a reason...SYMMETRY!

Yes, it looks aesthetically better and you get a sense of STABILITY when you play. You haven't got one lame analogue hiding away in the top left and another hiding in the bottom right. YOU'VE GOT A BETTER DESIGN BECAUSE THEY ARE TOGETHER.

THIRDLY:D-PAD Yes... the DS3 has one, and it's the best around... get used to it...

Ps3's controller ain't bad. I'll admit at first I was bummed that it was practically the same thing, but once I got used to it it's awesome.

For shooters though, I tend to use pc or the 360 versions

Seriously, I can't bleieve all these stories of people geting cramps and psuedo-carpol tunnel syndrome because of extended use of the controller. I'm 6 3". I have large hands. I have played MGS4 for 4 hours in one sit down at times. My hands do not require therapy.

My biggest complaint about the DS3 is the fact that the top of the sticks are rounded in a convex shape. I am constantly resituating my thumbs because they slip off of the sticks. The sticks on the 360 are concave to cradle your thumbs, much better design. The L2 and R2 triggers are stupid in design but, since most games use the R1 and L1 for the triggers its not that big of a deal. The D-pad on the DS3 is great but I don't use it as much.

I prefer the layout of the 360 controller, just fits my hand better and the analog stcks are where my thumb naturally sits. Where as on the DS2(don't have a ps3), my thumb sits over the D-Pad..

Maybe I am just used to the Intelligent design of the 360's analog sticks rather that the stupid design of the DS3. My fingers don't slip off of the R2/L2 buttons just the analog sticks. Anyway, its just an opinion.

I seriously do get hand pain and problems from the left analog of the 360 controller. The thing about the DS3 is that the analogs are right where your thumbs naturally are. You dont have to strain or put your thumb in an artificial position. The ds3 is fine.

Actually my hands are quite large. The pain is primarily from sprinting in Cod4. When you press in, its at sort of an awkward angle. Even sitting here I just moved my hand in to the 360 controller position and it hurts. I havent played in weeks. It really screwed my hand up.

Sorry, but the analogue placement is terrible on the PS3 pad for me. Its uncomfortable and harder to manipulate correctly for me. Maybe its all wonderful for you, but not for me. The 360 pad is the better controller for most games IMO. Fighters and other games heavily dependent on the d-pad though, the PS3 wins that one.

The analog sticks stink. The L2/R2 triggers stink. Hmm, I'm sure there's more, but I don't need to explain. It's a mediocre controller, imo, and it's why I prefer something that feels better and more sturdy, a la the Nyko Zero.

Ahhh, I understand. The small movements often take the largest toll. Button mashing triangle in MGS4 did the same thing to me.

Analog placements are crappy and the triggers are convex which is stupid. Plus SixAxis is still a joke when it comes to motion controls.

PS3 controllers aren't bad, but if I had to rate which controllers I liked best this gen...I'd rate it like this. Xbox 360 Controller 9/10 (That damn D-Pad) Dualshock 3 8.0/10 (I just could never get it to fit my hand well) Wii-mote + Nun Chuck 5/10 (I just don't like it)

Sadly, the PS3's triggers are pretty bad, and as a PS3 fan I am willding to admit it. They should be concave, not convex, which is where the slipping problem comes from. Fortunately, I managed to score myself two sets of these. :)

They're just a simple snap-on accessory for the DS3 and Sixasis that makes the triggers more "trigger like," so your fingers don't slip. They were a little pricey ($5 each, shipped from London), but they are definitely worth it. Once I got them, I immediately started remapping the trigger in first person shooters to R2, because it feels much more natural to me now. They also kick ass for racing games!

Lolz. Typical lemming handling controller for the sake of making a pseudo-frustrated reply on a forum. Picture rulz. "EH! I FUMBLED ITz!"

When he first grabs the controller, and the thumbs are just inside the d-pad's right button and the square button, that is the natural grip I have when I hold the PS3 pad, making it a stretch for my thumbs to make it to the analogs, which is why I think the PS3 pad is uncomfortable for me over long periods of time in games that are analog intensive.

The only thing wrong with every single SONY controller ever made is the aiming is too lose. Try and move an inch and it goes a mile. Thats it for me and I stand by that and dont need anyone trying to convince me im wrong. Song rules, MS rules, NIN rules, Sega rules, Atari rules, NEOGEO rules, Turbgraphix rules, CDi rules...EVERYTHING RULLLLEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSssssssssssss

The PS3 analogs are NOT in the natural position, otherwise the buttons and dpad would be there. The original PS controller didn't have analogs so the dpad and buttons where placed in the most natural positions and the analogs where tacked on later. Every console maker since the Sega with the Dreamcast, except for Sony, has correctly placed the left analog and the face buttons where the thumbs naturally fall as these are the primary controls for the vast majority of games. If you where making a pure FPS controller you would have the right analog where the buttons are but then it wouldn't work well for most other games, MS's layout has the best balance.

The Dual Shock 3 layout is not my favourite controller but it's not my least favourite either. The D-pad is very good (though not a patch on the Saturn's), the main buttons do their job fine (but can be a pain for anyone unaccustomed to it) and it is comfortable *if* you hold it properly.

Its biggest flaw is the analogue sticks which feel too much like an after thought although weirdly enough, they feel better as L3 and R3 buttons than their Xbox conterparts do.

Well games that are D-pad intensive on the 360 must be a real **** since they're in the exact same location as the PS3 analog. And you realize the right analog on the 360 is in the same place as the PS3's? This makes them cockeyed of course, so I don't know what you're complaining about.

If you want a frank explanation for this "thumbstrain" phenomenon, it's a result of the fact that the Dualshock was released for the Playstation 3 as a special controller addition. Literally, the PS3 analogs were an afterthought, or at least a later addition to an existing product. You take away the analogs and literally, that's the original PS1 controller. You're supposed to have primary control over the D-pad and the face buttons. Then shooting games happened and all that got jettisoned out the back of the window.

Is it unnatural? Yes. Is it uncomfortable? Be honest. Be frickin' honest. No controller is uncomfortable. In fact, if you lift your palms from the face pad when you hold the analogs, it fits more naturally in your grasp, letting the controller hang in your lower three fingers. And it's not cockeyed. So breathe a sigh of relief. Jeez, you guys will make an issue out of ANYTHING. The Wii controller must be absolute HELL.

Just admit it haters, you're fanboys and biased against ps3, that's why you all make up crap about the controller. Who freakin cares if the trigger button is concave or convex, how is that supposed to make you drop the controller right in the middle of playing a game? And the so called ergonomic-friendly placement of the analog stick? what the hell, its the long-a** sessions of gaming thats making you unhealthy, you'll be tired regardless of whatever controller you're using.

DS3 is a good controller, never had problems with its design (considering i've been used to it for almost 10 years now)... However I find the 360 controller to be slightly better for shooters and is more comfortable..

T-Aldous
The L2 and R2 of the DS2 had the same design. Just deal with it.

The analog sticks are too spongy but that's my only issue with the DS 3.
