im in two minds about this.
on the one hand i would prefer them to hold off for a very long time. AAA gaming is in bad shape and making more horsepower available isnt going to make it any better really. its not the visuals that they are lacking. the cost of development is just making them too risky now.
on the other hand.....well i do like a new gaming device (except for these stupid mid gen upgrades). im also also easily distracted by shiny things. 2019-2020 seems like a good gap since the PS4 launch.
maybe if they upgraded the hardware but MS and sony put in far stricter quality controls on all games released on their consoles. e.g. the game must run at X resolution with a minimum of X FPS or the game will not be allowed to be released. the publisher will need to demonstrate that their multiplayer backend can take a very heavy load so that the MP experience is seemless to the user at all times. the version of the game that goes gold must be of sellable quality (i.e. its not a completely buggy mess) and day 1 patches are just flat out banned. the state of console gaming at the moment has become a bit of a mess. all of the downsides of PC gaming; none of the upsides.
but i dont think making tons more horsepower available to developers and upping the cost of development even more is going to be helpful.
of course (raises superultramegaopti flame shield) they could also do a nintendo and play around with the hardware a bit more.
