If anything is the "PS2", its the Wii.

Vandalvideo

The PS2 had a large library of amazing games though.

So what is the PS2 then? The PS3, getting its balls handed to it by the competition, the X360 which has dropped like a stone in Japan, or the Wii which is selling out everywhere to absurd amounts of demand with almost no games?

None of them are the same, but the Wii is certainly the closest.

Depends on which measuring stick you use. Games? The 360. Sales? The Wii.

No, the 360's games can't compete with the PS2's first two yearsof games... But the Wii's first 10 months can compete with PS2's 10 months in sales.

If only four games were responsible for the success of the PS2, then how come their combined software sales still don't account for half of PS2 sales? The truth is, for all those craptacular 6.0 rated games you system whores love to cap on, someone is buying a PS2 to play them.

With Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, and Lair all probably flopping, PS3 will be dead in the water by 2008. It might enjoy a sales spike, but it will easily be 10 million consoles behind the 360 and especially the Wii. If all those games come out in holiday 2008, the PS3 might be 15 million behind the other two systems by the holidays.

No game spike will be able to make up that gap.

From the looks of it right now it seem nothing can stop nintendo's power train to success; not even a few great games.

the problem is that there aren't any of those comparitively amazing experiences coming to current gen consoles. Games like GTA3 and THPS3 blew everyone away. This gen, there aren't any games that do the same. People can get excited, but there is hardly any kind of huge impact from previous gen like the ps2 accomplished. And no, better AI or more characters on screen do not count. That is just more of the same of what was accomplished last gen and a Joe Everyman hardly notices.

Just remember that I'm basing this purely on how it upgrades the EXPERIENCE as percieved by the mass market.

GT5-what can I say? this is one of those genres that is based almost entirely on graphics and the game delivers big time. There is a huge market who would see it in motion and get it and the ps3 almost involuntarily. And the driving wheel too maybe. Huge for PSone, huge for PS2, huge for PS3

Halo 3- based on the online multiplayer alone. the single playerseems impressive, but not a revolution in gaming kind of amazing. My bet is that the online will have people talking, and has gotten to a point where it is really mainstream. Xbox had it last gen, but I dont think it has been fully realized yet. Since microsoft knows how important halo is, as the face of the xbox brand, I'm sure it will be stellar.

Manhunt 2 (Wii)- I think this game will get a lot of word of mouth. It is doing something that no game has ever done in history. You are truly connected to the action. You are carrying out the murders no just pushing buttons. Plus, it's gore, which people love boasting about to their friends ("There was this level where I had to jam this syringe down a guy's throat!", etc.). This really illustrates what the wii is all about I guess. You're not ordering your character to act, you are actually doing it. If it's anything like Godfather though, the controls could be a bit clunky.

Anyway, I'm not saying those games are the best games the consoles have to offer. Just experiences. Manhunt 2 in particular, which goes balls out with the motion sensing integration and I think it deserves credit for it even if the game isn't the best. (pardon the pun in there by the way). I hope more happy games can follow suit with similar controls for doing lighter fare. Harvest moon with motion sensing to mimic farming chores maybe?

That and I suppose that the wii itself generates a lot of buzz and even wiisports will be big this holiday season. That game is a huge deal for the wii.
