So they have been in the business longer with no competitors, but as soon as there are competitors, they struggle and as soon as Sony entered they got spanked. They hit a one off fad with their Wii and have been kept afloat with handhelds for about 4 gens or so.
They don't want to take a risk, the Wii U is an excuse of a console. 'We're going to keep the performance low, because we want you to have a touch screen', don't think so. Out of date physics, ai...
The industry is moving into a place where Nintendo are going to struggle to move into. Not just hardware, but services as well. MS has just spent billions on cloud data centres all around the world, Nintendo are never going to do that, Sony might, but it'll take them some time to build that infrastructure (MS started in 2009). Sony have Gaikai, I don't see Nintendo doing that either. They are falling behind. It's just Mario and Zelda and whatever propping them up.
Right now i'd rather MS, at least they're continually researching and coming up with new things. MS and Sony are at the forefront, and Nintendo just can't keep up anymore.
