The most important feature of Live, and why I continue paying for it, is TrueSkill. It's how I find games with people of my skill level, and avoid being matched up against a bunch of rookies or MLG competitors. Without it, a weekend warrior type like myself is doomed to be blown out by the truly dedicated, who don't let silly things like paying the rent get in the way of their gaming time. I only manage to fit in a few hours of online time per month, and I don't feel like spending them getting annihilated by a hypercaffeinated 12-year-old while 2 guys who don't even know which way the flag is ineffectually try to get my back.

So, Sony fans, enjoy your in-game XMB (I'll be quite happy to finally get it) - it's a nice start, but nowhere near enough.

I'm curious...does it really use a TrueSkill for everygame? Because sometimes I play a match of CoD4 against guys who can barely crawl out of their diapers, and sometimes I fight against super awesome guys who kick my ass so much, and then proceed to bend me over.

Because this is new to me :|

Link plz.

Its basically impossible for PSN to have a similar True skill system like XBL because the service isnt unified. Of course, some developers could decide to put a skill matching system in their game. But that shows one of the disadvantages of PSN, the developers arent forced to do it, therefore most games wont make use of the feature.

no it's not. The true stand out feature that live had over PSN is/was the in-game friend list and if you're able to upload your gameplay videos through youtube straight from the ps3, then that feature alone will destroy that "trueskill" feature that the xbl have

The system is not going to be 100% full proof obviously. But heres what i found

"TrueSkillon the Xbox 360 is a skill-based ranking system that is used across the majority of Xbox 360 titles. It involves the user playing ranked games against other players, with the results used to update the skill level estimates of those involved. For each game, a user has two hidden statistics: anestimated skill level, and anuncertainty factor. As a player continues to play further matches of the same title, the system revises the estimated skill level and decreases the uncertainty factor. As the uncertainty in the estimate decreases, the estimated level moves up or down by a smaller amount with each successive match. The eventual goal is to exactly determine the level of the player, i.e. his or her "true skill level". Depending on the title, this calculated skill level may or may not be displayed to users.

When matchmaking, the system attempts to match individuals based on their estimated skill level. If two individuals are competing head-to-head and have the same estimated skill level with low estimate uncertainty, they should each have roughly a 50% chance of winning a match. In this way, the system attempts to make every match as competitive as possible.

In order to prevent abuse of the system, the majority of ranked games have relatively limited options for matchmaking. By design, players cannot easily play with their friends in ranked games. Instead, the system supports unrankedPlayer Matches, which allow individuals of any skill level to be paired (often including "guests" on an account). Such matches do not contribute to the TrueSkill rating."

Err... I sell games the moment I'm bored, can't be bothered to build collections of games I don't feel I'll be playing a few years down the line.

Why not? I make $50 in a couple hours.

So do I. But the way I see it, $50 is a game, or a year of live. And if I could only squeeze in a couple hours a month, it'd be a game, not live :?

That's a couple online hours a month, not total. I get plenty of single-player time - it's a lot easier to squeeze in a GTA mission or two between cooking dinner and hitting the exercise bike than it is to get some good online gaming in, especially since I prefer (but don't always get) to play with a friend or two on my team.

And how often do you find yourself getting completely 110% oh dear GOD i can't touch him owned? Cause i very very rarely have it happen. I can almost always hold my own. And if that's happening, it's safe to say true skill is working and does improve the experience.

Those rankings do not measure skill exactly, just how much time you've put into the game really. Its the numbered ranks that are supposed to represent your skill, and i think Halo 3 does a pretty good job at matching those up. Same with COD4, except in COD4 your number is hidden, you dont know what it is.

Neither does the PS3:) And you have no idea how the feature will work. Devs might have to imcorporate it into their games themselves, therefore all the current PS3 titles wont be able to do it...unless they are patched.

Well Generals usually have skills up in the 40's and obviously a 50, while Privates have skills under 10. Okay maybe I exagerated about the Privates, but I know I've defiantly seen Generals and Sergeants in my games.

In-game xmb is barely a good start - wheres skill matching?
skill matching is barely enough - where's all the extra content Live gets?
all that extra content is nothing - why cant the ps3 fly?
who cares if ps3 can fly - when will it be able to show me the future? Sony failed big time.

Nothing is good enough for some people, i really really dont care about something like skill matching, in-game xmb will make PSN the same as Live for me, and for free.

Not every game has it, and the games that do you can't even tell (like Gears of War...). CoD4 has no skill based matchmaking at all it just throws random people in a room and hopes for the best. And Halo 3 which has probably the closest thing to a perfect matchmaking system doesn't use truskill it uses its own system. I'd rather Live enforced every game with Halo's skill system and have semi-fair matches at least 75% of the time than just throwing crap at a wall and seeing what sticks like every other game even the "truskill" games. We're not even getting our moneys worth. Its just as chaotic as PSN save for Halo 3 but my word everyone has to hate on it and say its terrible when it has some of the most refined features of any other game on Live. Though thats mainly due to lazy devs, I wish Microsoft would take are money and use some of it to enforce some unformity among Live games.

PSN offers lag-free (depending on the game and host obviously) gaming.

Live offers lag-free (depending on the game and host obviously) gaming.

Live has the main feature that I want, which is in-game friends lists and stuff like that

PSN is getting that^.

PSN is free, Live isnt.

PSN > Live, for me.

So long as this match making feature is optional, I can see why people would want it. But if this skill matching feature is not optional, it's absolutely stupid.

If you just want a casual game, nothing serious, it's a good feature to have. But if you want to get better at a game, have a challenge with it, you want to play better players. You don't get better by playing people as good as you are, you get better by playing people better than you. You learn from them, and see what you're doing wrong.

Skill matching is vastly overrated.

You really think some of those guys with 44% accuracy ratio and 353 kill streaks are as good as those stats suggest??

You know how many gold crosses in COD4 I waste with ease being a 55 level non prestige player?

Stats can be padded very easily in any video game. You should know this already.

You spend money on live to only get ina few hours of gaming in a month? :? What a ripCouth_

Is it? Say he gets 4 hours in a month. 48 hours a year. Just over $1 an hour to play on LIVE. Is that so bad? Seems like a great deal to me.

The most important feature of Live, and why I continue paying for it, is TrueSkill.

lowe0

lol wut?

does that feature even work? I haven't heard anything about TrueSkill since before the 360 launched. Games like Halo do TrueSkill better than TrueSkill could do TrueSkill. If it even works.

This is probably why MLG will never touch the PSN for competitions.

ReverseCycology

Yeah, because that's how they get the competitors.

They definitely don't run tournaments or have a gamebattles site where clans battle for positions and the right to go into LAN tournaments.

Oh. the reason MLG doesn't use PS3 for competitions is because it doesn't have Halo. It's the only reason Gears and Rainbow Six are there, because they don't want their Halo fanboyism to be so obvious.

Kind of like you're fanboyism towards Microsoft. You might want to take some notes on how to hide your fanboyism from MLG.

You know this argument is going to keep going on until the end of time... I have seen nothing come from Sony that was new that I, a XBL user, was envious of. Sure you may get a lot of the feature that we use for free thats great and all but where is the new stuff? Last time I checked Microsoft seemed to be making the great new features and Sony has been playing "me too, just for free!" I think its worth paying for new features
