And in two years we'll hear a dev say the PS3 won't be maxed for another two years.

Who knows ;]
I shall continue to be of the conviction that there is no such thing as maxing out consoles. There is writing more efficient code for 100% set in stone technical specs of them however.
honestly, ill wait for naughty dog to tell me that since they seem to getting the most out of the ps3 thus far....

Insomniacs word really dosen't count for jack when it comes to how much power has been seen/used with the PS3. Its like a lemmings tell sony fans that 360 is more powerful than PS3 using multi-plats that as an example when several exclusive on PS3 look better than anything on 360.
when either Gurellia or Naughty Dog speaks on this issue I'll listen or when Insomnic learns how to leverage PS3's power the way it's supposed to be for a 1st/2nd party developer.
Maybe at Insomniac, but Naughty Dog says otherwise. Then again, this "maxing out" talk is PR crap to get the graphic ****** all antsy in the pantsy and nothing more. How about making unique visual styles instead? Oh, I totally forgot, that takes talent.
consoles teach devs how to push hardware that is limited in power. One could argue consoles help pc beacuseafter being forced to make good physics and graps on limited power they are better able to use the limitless power of pc.
People can take advantage of 100% of the PS3 but its impossible to max out a console because someone will come along and make more efficient code to make a better looking game. Nonstop-Madness
and here we go.
people make this mistake often
better looking games can be had through better and more efficient use of the power. however better looking =/= better tech.
i could make a game (hypothetically if i was a programmer) that looked better than crysis by setting it in a tight urban setting with lots of visual details however it wouldnt mean it had better tech than crysis or that it used more power.
visuals =/= a direct representation of power only the underlying tech.
Seriously, even if PS3 manages to reach it's full potential, Microsoft would come out with the X-Box 720 & will blow the PS3's graphics into smithereens. Then Sony will have no choice but to play catch up in both the power & graphics department once again.
That's a bad way to try and bash a current-gen console.Seriously, even if PS3 manages to reach it's full potential, Microsoft would come out with the X-Box 720 & will blow the PS3's graphics into smithereens. Are you implying that Crysis (maxed out) could be run on the PS3 if its coding were written efficiently enough? I'm not disagreeing, by the way. I'm just curious. I don't know much about computer science.I shall continue to be of the conviction that there is no such thing as maxing out consoles. There is writing more efficient code for 100% set in stone technical specs of them however.

The truth that you're putting a hypothetical future-gen console against a current-gen console? Fine. We can go into a PS4 vs. Xbox 720 graphics debate if you want.[QUOTE="slvrraven9"]

You saying their word doesn't count for jack, doesn't count for jack. They are developers, just because their game doesn't push the graphics barrier doesn't mean they don't know what they are talking about. Use common sense, and stop spouting off nonsense like you know what you are talking about.[QUOTE="garland51"][QUOTE="nervmeister"]That's a bad way to try and bash a current-gen console.nervmeister

Not that I don't agree, but they did make a 60 player online game. Think they know the limits.multiplayer player caps have more to do with netcode, online setup, and server capacity (if using one) than it does the system that runs it. There were large multiplayer games last gen on Xbox, and im quite sure the original xbox is weaker than PS3. My personal opinion?? 60, 50, and even 48 players are too many, i have more fun with 8, 16, and to some extent 24 player online games, after that, it gets into chaos, and no one works together IMOLOL. If you keep worrying about the future, you will never enjoy the present. Besides, Microsoft always end up trying to play catch up.

Every thing in a game takes time, even multiplayer :O Time invested in multiplayer = time lost in graphics, or singleplayer

If MS was run by a System Wars'-goer like yourself, then no, I'd think MS would happily shoot themselves in the foot by releasing a newer, more expensive console early and in the midst of an economic recession. But, you know, since MS actually cares more about profit than graphics, I'm convinced they're nowhere near suicidal enough to do what you're seeing in your crystal ball.[QUOTE="garland51"]

But, you know, since MS actually cares more about profit than graphics, I'm convinced they're nowhere near suicidal enough to do what you're seeing in your crystal ball.Don't get me wrong, I like both Sony & Microsoft, but there are some things that you need to think about between the two companies. Microsoft didn't want Sony to be the first in line for this gen, so they got out in first. Sony had an entire year, an entire year before E3 '06, to make sure that they overtake Microsoft in the graphics & power department. Not only have they screwed up in that part by having their system exactly like the 360, but they charged consumers an arm & a leg (600 bones) for a 360 with a Blu-Ray player (in which that was one of the reasons of why that price was high, including the cell). If one company isn't going to beat the other to the punch of getting their console out first, then at least do something that will overtake your rival in the power & graphics department in return.
Oh, & don't make your console so expensive. Plus I'm pretty sure that MS will be making smart decisions when it comes to not releasing their new console. Late 2012 to early 2013 would sound about right.

Besides, Microsoft seem to have lost alittle money this year compared to last year. Affordable hardware isn't much better than the hardware in the PS3, and I don't think Microsoft are willing to take the gamble of a new console just yet.

Entertainment and Devices income jumps from $159 million to $312 million; Xbox Live revenue up 50%, gaming revenue up $100 million.
MS is making heavy profit this gen. Im not saying they will launch a console next year though. The 360 hardware is much cheaper than PS3, and they have been making a profit on console units since the end of 2007, they can afford to cut prices, and stay competitive this gen, they dont need to launch early
WHEN a Console or PC can not run a game due to the limited capabilities of said system then it is maxed out.
Try running GT5 on PS1 and it just will not work. or if you get it to work it would not be the same game!!

Well, yes and no. Can Crysis run on consoles? Yes. There would have to be a lot that's changed. If you would want to maintain the quality of the physical objects, you would have to lower the scale of the game, either by cell loading, or breaking the levels down into smaller parts.
If you would want to maintain the large open levels, you would have to reduce the quality/ampount of physical objects and use lower quality models and textures. It's definitely a RAM issue, not a GPU or CPU issue.
I've always thought Consoel devs were more talented, or atleast more savvy then PC devs.
They make great looking games using the very limited hardware they have.
This PR is very annoying though, it's like Peter Moleyneux ... but obviously less sleep inducing.
Stats_
Hahaha, PC devs basically have to design for a dozen consoles with thousands of variables. Console devs only have to develop for one or two consoles wi thno variables. Tell me, now, which one is more talented :D
