Former ex-Facebook (now renamed to Meta) deputy CISO Christian Thompson, now Managing Director of the Sui Foundation, sat down with BeInCrypto during his first Asia tour since taking the position. At Meta he led blockchain security for the Libra/Diem project, Thompson brings over 30 years of leadership experience across various industries, including successful entrepreneurship and law enforcement.

SuiPlay0X1 marked a milestone as the first blockchain gaming hardware. What led to this unprecedented initiative, and how does it fit into your gaming strategy?

Gaming was a big early bet for us – we chose it because it’s unpredictable and a great way to test technology. For SuiPlay0X1, we announced it at Korea Blockchain Week in September 2024 and received about 1,700 pre-orders in that first week. Now, we’re up to 7,000 pre-orders for our 2025 release. While $599 isn’t cheap, our strategy is about getting a Web3 device into people’s hands responsibly. We’ve partnered with NHN and Xociety in Korea, and we’re building this as a bridge between Web2 and Web3. It’s the first handheld device for Web3 – no one else has anything like it.

Exclusive interview with Be(In)Crypto

Another web site Kucoin has more information:

The SuiPlay0X1 is a groundbreaking Web3 handheld gaming console designed to integrate blockchain technology with traditional PC gaming seamlessly. Equipped with advanced features like a sleek, no-bezel design, and the capability to natively support both PC games and AAA titles developed using Sui technology, the SuiPlay0X1 is set to revolutionize the gaming world.

From the official site:

The SuiPlay0X1 anchors on providing gamers the flexibility to play games across multiple marketplaces. More details to come on which marketplaces are available. When users create a new Playtron account during the pre-order process, a new wallet is created, using zkLogin and tied to the Playtron account. The pre-order NFT is issued into this new wallet, and is visible from your Order History on the Pre-order site. In due course we will provide information on how to access and use the Playtron wallet. This wallet will only be accessible using valid Playtron credentials created during the order process.

So far the developer Parasol has been able to acquire a license from Sega for Code of Joker: Evolutions to make a Sui game based on that.

“From our first conversation on what a digital experience of CODE OF JOKER: EVOLUTIONS would look like, we knew that we wanted to match the physical feeling of opening a new card pack,” said Takashi “Gin” Mizouka, Co-founder of Jokers Inc. “Sui was the only blockchain that could make this vision a reality, and we are thrilled to be working alongside the Parasol team on the first of many collaborations. Jokers has already secured multiple licensing agreements with major Japanese character IPs, and we’re excited to bring them onto Sui, further expanding the Web3 gaming landscape.”

The specs are:

  • 7-inch no-bezel screen
  • IPS, 1920x1200
  • AMD Ryzen™ 7 7840U processor
  • AMD Ryzen 780M GPU
  • 512GB SSD
  • WiFi 6E
  • Bluetooth 5.2
  • $599 early bird special price

I tried to figure out what makes a game a Web3 game or a Sui game but I think the requirement is to be browser based, and Blockchain, NFT, and Crypto support? I'm wondering if it's possible to play anything offline on this. The specs don't look amazing for $600, and the price will go up after.

Anyone here think Sui games are the future? Sounds like Phil Spencer was way off if these guys are right!

I can NOT buy one and still play my existing PC and mobile games and keep the $600 in my pocket.

"own your in-game assets"? Oh, that will appeal to every clown whose only contribution to discussions about digital distribution in general is always something like "but you don't actually OWN it", as well as people who once thought NFTs were the future of gaming.

The ad is almost perfect, it just needs tell everyone "it's got electrolytes".

I refused to buy anything related to blockchain or crypto.

I'm CERTAINLY not buying a handheld gaming console where I have to enter payment info to purchase games on it.

I have no fucking clue what this is, and I'd prefer it to stay that way. Facebook, Meta, NFT, browser based, crypto, Blockchain.. My brain is melting from all the bullshit.

@Litchie: I feel like all that is from another dimension

I think they made a Gameboy for suckers because they tried to make phone games but Play Store and iStore would never list them in a million years

First off, I hate everything about the following statement:

Former ex-Facebook (now renamed to Meta) deputy CISO Christian Thompson, now Managing Director of the Sui Foundation, sat down with BeInCrypto during his first Asia tour since taking the position. At Meta he led blockchain security for the Libra/Diem project, Thompson brings over 30 years of leadership experience across various industries, including successful entrepreneurship and law enforcement.

Second...why? I mean...why?

What does it do that a Steam Deck can't?

Third: they want me to spend how much on it?

Look, I understand the desire for alternatives and I will support (in spirit!) on that merit alone, but there's a difference between wanting an alternative and being desperate for one. I'm not so desperate I would seriously consider whatever this *gestures wildly* is.

For real.

Dead on arrival. Or kept on life support for a while, maybe, but essentially dead.

And I get it, it's their money, they can spend it how they want, but this company has real "**** you money" vibes. I'm used to people having that kind of money, but for an entire organization to basically say "Man we have so much cash, what do we want to do with it? Hey how about we invest in a handheld we all know doesn't stand a chance but we'll do it anyway?"

Own your own assets sounds like a pretty good grift.

It's like when people sold the rights to this block of tungsten that was apparently the largest block of tungsten ever. You couldn't own it, you couldn't possess it,...but for a lot of money you could visit it and look at it.

So, you know, it's sort of like asset but not!

Naming scheme sucks but the console design itself seems comfortable to hold.

that's awesome! You have like 2x10^18 tons of iron, helium, hydrogen. You're a theoretical quintillionaire!
