Recently, Apple was voted the most influential gaming company in the world. The amazing thing about this is that Apple hasn't put any effort into creating a gaming label, a gaming division, or any sort of exclusive agreements with prolific companies in the gaming realm. They've all come to Apple. With that in mind, look at another trend we're seeing with the smaller, more indie type developers -- a small sample of games available for Apple's iDevices:

Anomaly: Warzone Earth

World of Goo

Avadon: The Black Fortress

Machinarium

Galcon Fusion

Osmos

And next on the list? Frozen Synapse

So at what point do people start to admit the effect Apple has had on gaming? Why are people so adamant to resist what is so clearly in front of them? Shall I continue?

iOS has also become a platform for games long forgotten. Sid Meier's Pirates, Delphine Software's Another World, Spectre VR, The 7th Guest, too many Final Fantasy remakes, Bungie's Marathon, Duke Nukem 3D, a wealth of Pangea Software games including titles like Cro-Mag Rally, Billy Frontier, Nanosaur 2, and Bugdom 2, ChuChu Rocket!, and The Quest. This list goes on and on, we're only scratching the surface.

So, who's ready to join me in the real world?

I'm not, at least not yet. I mean..every single game with image you've posted is on PC :)

Next year I will propably get iPhone 4S and do some gaming, but I don't see it becoming anything beyond ocassional distraction. I mean, why would I play on it when I'm home next to a gaming PC?

Basically what my iPad has been turned into is a touch gaming device. I mainly use it at home when I get off a 9-10 hour shift and don't want to look at or even turn my computer on at home. Big fan of the NBA Jam they did on there and the Tiger Woods PGA games.

So a.) you admit you're ignoring reality, b.) the point of the thread was to point out how many indie PC games are available on the go via an iDevice, and c.) some games are just better on a touch screen (World of Goo, Osmos, Galcon Fusion, Anomaly Warzone, and I'm betting Frozen Synapse will be better as a touch screen game)

Yeah some games do work better with touch screen devices, one of them is Plants vs zombies.

I play games on my iTouch a lot, but there is absolutely nothing on there that is an engaging experience like what I can find on my other systems. I've tried out more ambitious games from the App store and they all have fallen short because of the controls and battery life.

A) I don't see how you can make that claim. Exactly what part of reality did I deny?

B) If that was the point of this thread then you should have written so. Don't blame for not being able to telepathically connect with your thought process :)

C). That's subjective. World of Goo and Osmos play better on touch screen, Galcon Fusion and Anomaly Warzone play better on a mouse and if you would play Frozen Synapse you would know it's highly unlikely iPad version will match PC one, let alone surpass it.

When an app market is filled with this kind of junk I wouldnt be suprized if no-body little devs would vote it, you can make a quick buck out of apple consumors easily enough.

Meanwhile android with further openGL support, and Windows 7.5 having DirectX, XNA and full xboxlive support... I know where the future of quality control mobile gaming will be.

PC360Wii

Yet AppStore born all the hits that are ported to Android later on with Angry Birds in the lead. And whats "further openGL"? as i kno both Android and iOS runs OpenGL ES 2.0

And 90% of the games listed in this thread are on STEAM or world in goo on wii. oh sure, point and click indie devs will LOVE smartphones.... what about the other abundance of genres? minecraft plays like crap on a mobile.... and again.... apples app store is starting to lose steam over the competition, so why is this an APPLE thread not a smartphone thread?

I still can't think of a single major mobile game on Android that's not on iOS. I can think of plenty on iOS not on Android.

Android is catching up, but that doesn't mean iOS is losing steam. It's still a far better platform for indie devs (less fragmentation, easier to design for, more robust App Store, less piracy, greater consumer willingness to pay for applications).

Im using one... and Im not as impressed as I was 4 years ago in all fairness. Apple gaming is splintered aswell. ofcourse it will have most of the mainstream mobile titles... because it has been market dominent over a longer period, which is steadily in decline. As ive already said, what you can do is highly limited. oh sure I love paying for games that can be done on flash for 50p ... tiny wings amused me for awhile, but im a gamer ... I want more, iPhone consumors and the whole walled garden limited aspect of it is just not going to get me anywhere in the long run.

Some of you seem to be missing the point. Every game I listed is supposed to be available on both the computer and iDevices. That's what I'm trying to convey. Apple has made a very stable, consistent ecosystem in which indie developers can take advantage of to create their games on more mobile devices.

In a real-life conversation, one way to help determine a person's character is to ask questions you already know the answers to, and see how they respond.

The opening post is engineered in a simlar fashion, only with a mind towards the topic at hand. It's pretty obvious that those games are also available on the computer, so cookies all around to people who pointed it out. But this thread isn't about the fact that you can play those games on the computer, and that very fact has no significant relavence to this thread. It's about the fact that while they are available on the computer, developers felt it would be a good idea to also release it on iOS -- making it the gold standard for mobile gaming and mobile game distrobution. Apple's relevance and influence on the gaming world on display.

Maybe one day this hand-holding won't be necessary, and the forum Sherlocks will think more critically before typing the obvious. I look forward to that day.

You tried subtelty on System Wars? :)

Still, if this was your intent, shouldn't you name the thread "iOS -- Indie Developers New Best Friend" instead? Because how does existence of few late ports of indie pc games make iOS "best friend" to indie gamers? If you're trying to appeal to pc gamers (and I assume you want because of the games selected) then it's clerarly not the way. Unless we consider PC being such indie gamer's wife/husband, thus relegating friend to secondary status :)

In very limited genres, and is available on all smart phones, yes its more streamlined, but its limited in the process.... a re-occuring theme.

Apple does set limits to how developers can utilize the mobile hardware, with user experience in mind (battery life, performance, spy/adware, etc). Their rules are not arbitrary and pointless. What limitations effect your experiences with the indie games I've listed here, or any of the multiple others I've excluded for the sake of time?

They would work even better if you would stop thinking you represent the whole population of gamers.

It also a very good idea to instead of making threads that are declarations attempt to write ones hat are supposed to initate discussions, since that's what forums are for.

Im simple refering to the genre limitations that are still heavily in place. and please, nobody calls flash game developers "indie" ... a small percentage are actually successful on any phone including iOS ... a bunch of popular PC indie games come to smart phones and suddenly its a new home? hardly....

All those games you listed are also on pc. PC is probably the best indie platform.

But there's nothing wrong with another platform that's good for indie games. PS you should put SpaceChem on there, awesome game.

You wrote you already know thew answer t the question in this thread, which means you consider your opinion to be a fact for all gaming population.

Then you also made it pretty clear that you've created this thread to just judge people's reaction to your declaration.

Bassicaly, this is a blog post masquerading as forum thread.

It's a new friend for those who play indie games, but it's definitely not going to be a best friend for me -- that will forever be the PC. For developers and aspiring developers, It could well be a best friend for them in trying out new markets even if the iOS competition is flooded with a stupendous amount of buy power tactics. But why list PC games as opposed to other great iOS games like Contre Jour, Squids, Collision Effect or iBlast Moki? -- Great titles that could probably do well on other platforms but are probably doing well just being on the app store? Is this just a hermit bait? Or the lack of appreciation of flagship iOS games to the point where you would prefer PC indie games? Frozen Synapse on the iOS would be awesome as the turn based structure works on the go; if they implement cross platform multiplayer, add alerts/notifications when outside the game and make use of the cache so that it opens your last session immediately, it would easily be the definitive version. Sucks that it would probably only work well with a tablet as any other device would make its interface fiddly.

first, none of the games you mentioned started as iOS games, not even the highlight. all the highlights are PC games that got ported later (world of goo being the exception, it started on the wii before being ported). so basically, just ports, and last i checked ports aren't anyone's idea of "progress in the industry". second, apple is as relevant to the industry as nokia was before: they make cellphone games, which are games you get charged to play instead of getting to play them for free on kongregate and the like. the quality and the value of those games haven't changed, the difference is that now they're on an iPhone. third, that list you mentioned has mark zuckeberg on the top 5. the facebook guy. the fifth most influential person on the history of the videogames industry. more important than the invention of sidescroll progression, saving the industry in 1983, invention of home consoles and later portable systems, invention of 3D graphics in games, popularization of the online network, etc. think about it for a second.

The thing i have found about the iOS and Android is that people buy games, play them once for mabey 15 minutes and are done alot of the time. There have been a few decent games that come out on it, but an indie dev trying to make an in depth game is going to have quite a problem.

Pretty strong words bud. Wouldn't 'mildly surprised' be more appropriate? This is an Internet forum after all. On topic, any naysayers must not have played superbrothers: sword and sworcery. Easily my favorite game since the original Portal.

"shocks and saddens" are strong words? it's just that i'd expect someone with the status of moderator to be better than the average system warrior, and that knowing the truth, he wouldn't go and ignore it in favor of his argument.

How dare you to claim that this system is new and revolutional while it's a clear ripoff of the steam principle.
Sorry, Apple is Apple and all Apple does is ripoff concepts, puts them in a new jacket with incredible design and uses some godlike marketing to act as if they are a friendly, responsible bussiness who are never at fault. (They are not, Steve Jobs was close to the incarnation of the devil)

I admire Apple for their smart marketing and incredible design, in technical and innovate aspects they offer nothing new/better.

Edit,
They come to Apple because Apple knows how to sell stuff, thats pretty much it.

So at what point do people start to admit the effect Apple has had on gaming? Why are people so adamant to resist what is so clearly in front of them?

Most people already agree, as the poll you mention suggests. SW has no reflection on the population at large, and as long as hipsters like hating on hipsters, Apple hate is gonna thrive here.

An indie gamers new best friend? That will ALWAYS be the PC given that the quality is on average way higher, and there are way more available. PC will be my best friend forever. I don't see smartphones or tablets ever taking that spot. They can be friends though.

You forgot about Little Wings

This game is made by one man and yet it kicked back parts of Angry Birds for few days :p

ShadowriverUB

That looks just like dragon fly only with a bird instead of a dragon.

I'm too busy playing real games on my 3DS to play .99c casual stuff :P

And lol at them voting Apple as the most influential. That's simply false.

first, none of the games you mentioned started as iOS games, not even the highlight. all the highlights are PC games that got ported later (world of goo being the exception, it started on the wii before being ported)BrunoBRS
World of Goo was released simultaneously on the Wii and PC. It may have even been released first on Steam, I don't quite remember.

[QUOTE="BrunoBRS"] "shocks and saddens" are strong words? it's just that i'd expect someone with the status of moderator to be better than the average system warrior, and that knowing the truth, he wouldn't go and ignore it in favor of his argument.

I'm sorry I disappointed you. lol

(That's a lie)

Listen, before you go all holier than thou on us, maybe it's you should stop and think for a moment. First of all, you missed the point of the thread, and like many of the other Sherlocks, were quick to point out that those games were available on a computer before they were an iDevice. Your powers of observation seem to be working. Secondly and thirdly:

second, apple is as relevant to the industry as nokia was before: they make cellphone games, which are games you get charged to play instead of getting to play them for free on kongregate and the like. the quality and the value of those games haven't changed, the difference is that now they're on an iPhone.BrunoBRS

Apple doesn't make games! I had to clarify that "Mac" isn't a company to another user earlier, so I guess it shouldn't surprise me that others may not understand that Apple isn't in the business of making games. And the quality and value of mobile games hasn't changed? How can anyone ever take you seriously when you can't seem to decipher the subtle differences between Snake and World of Goo??

Like I said before -- way ahead of you.

You wrote you already know thew answer t the question in this thread, which means you consider your opinion to be a fact for all gaming population.

Then you also made it pretty clear that you've created this thread to just judge people's reaction to your declaration.

Bassicaly, this is a blog post masquerading as forum thread.

AdrianWerner

Not even the points in this one post of yours line up in a meaningful or logical way.

This thread simply piggy-backs off the news that Apple was voted most influential company to gaming by 1,000 gaming professionals, in a calculated way. I spelled it out for you pretty clearly. Conjecture is fun, too, though...

Why bother playing garbage games and ports that play better on other systems?
