I'm not saying that some of the games I'm going to mention aren't good. Rather some are excellent...but it's the pattern evolving that I'm fed up with.

I'll explain.

See in recent years we've been fed un-original, inane and pointless titles such as Call of Duty, Battlefield, Dead Island, etc. I'm not saying these are bad games. I'm just saying I'm sick of them.

I'll give you an example. So many people are hating on titles such as Silent Hill: Downpour. Yes, it's flawed but it's unique and it's well put together. There's no horror title like any of the SH games, but yet people seem to hate on it. But then they go and play games that come out every single year with only a few extra map packs or skins to add to the mix.

I want unique games. I want games with flavour and taste, ones that do what they do well. Like Deus Ex: HR. Sure, the genre has been done before, but the elements, story, taste and design is mouth-watering.

A game like Vanquish may have a crap story, but the gameplay is ace and completely original. Dead Space 2 isn't original, but the universe is so deep, so enthralling and so detailed that it's hard not to get sucked into it and think about it hours after you put the controller down.

That doesn't happen with Battlefield or CoD. I play them as well, but I still want something better.

I want tities that suck you in, involve you, and aren't all just about the action. I want games such as Bayonetta thatare completely original and games such as Deus Ex and Batman that do what they do with such detail and enthanuism that you can't help but fall in love with.

I'm so sick of all these games that are skin deep that don't involve you, don't give you after thoughts, nor do they do anything new.

Do you guys know where I'm coming from?

Discuss.

You want diversity, richness, innovation and variety.

well thats the thing... the industry has to cater to a whole bunch of people, not just you (not targetting you..just speaking generally)

There are going to be gamers who just want the battlefields and cods... there are going to be people like me who want those games AND unique and greatly crafted games like deus ex.... and then you have those people who like pretentious indy trash..

I dont think its fair to list dead island among cod/bf because i think dead island is unique and doesnt really cater to the cod'bros..despite all its flaws..u dont really see a zombie game like it..whereas bf and cod are SOLEY made for the gamers who like multiplayer, competitive fragfests..

if you have a PS3, there's a wealth of other genres like 3D Dot Game Heroes, the Yakuza series, jRPGs like Valakyria Chronicles and Tales of Grace f, upcoming games like One Piece and Ni No Kuni, the LittleBigPlanets, the Heavy Rains, the inFamous's, the God of Wars, the StarHawks, ths Disgaeas, the MLB The Shows, the Ratchet and Clanks, the Twisted Metals, etc. etc. etc.

all of these exclusives play vastly different from each other that you'll never get bored.

Dead Island may not necessarily be original, but it's hardly a game that maintains the status quo. For all intents and purposes it sticks out from the rest of the market.

I understand what you mean. I get my variety fix from the handhelds. So many great games for DS, 3DS, and even PSP. Vita will hopefully get there some day. PC has lots of great varied titles, too. Many are on Steam or part of the indie bundles. PSN, XBLA, and occasionally Wiiware have some interesting games. You should probably look at things other than what's shoved down your throat and you're told you're supposed to like.

I have a PS3, and I'm not talking about that. Even God of War: that might be a showcase of bloody action and great gameplay, but all it is is button mashing, ripping heads off, etc. Nothing special there.

We've always been fed these types of games. It's not a new trend.

The problem isn't the games, or the developers, or the publishers, but the gamer (you) who needs to seek out the games he/she desires. You aren't going to get very far if you find yourself only paying attention to review scores, and commercials.

Trust me there are HUNDREDS of games that fit the description of games YOU DESIRE, and they ALL come from this generation. I know because I play them every day of my life.

Amen! Sadly with development costs on the rise, we don't see many different titles, taking risks these days can be a huge blow and with todays generation and mentality...sticking to what works just makes sense, and since people keep coming back, they will keep making the same types of games. Just not enough of us for them to warrant such vast majority of immersion and depth, concerning both gameplay and story. Tired of games playing themselves.

True, it was more unique. Too bad it isn't all that great of a game though.

Terraria is a great one that really was unique and was good. Same with the Stalker games. And if you really want to experience a game with depth and difficulty, get Call of Pripyat and install the Misery mod. It's insane.

I think the issue is that you are looking in the wrong places, try broadening your horizons outside the AAA market.

Unique games with depth?

Looks like the strategy genre is up your alley (tonnes of unique games here), Frozen Synapse is good, and so is Crusader Kings 2. Wargame: European Escalation was released recently, and while I haven't tried it yet, I heard nothing but good things about it.

That's a great perspective, broadening my horizons is something i actually need to do. Another thing to be watchful of is arcade games..some are surprisingly good, great variety.

SEN, WiiWare, Nintendo Network, XBLA, love them and...

*opens Desura*
*sees a ton of innovative games*

Gotta love lower budget games at times.

True, it's the consumer that also needs to do something about it. Not just the developers. We're providing the reason for them to make games like they do.

Today, every game is a first person shooter with a short, mediocre single player and a multiplayer copied from Call of Duty 4.

There are actually many games this generation that do what TC asked. They just aren't the mainstream... here are some of my favorites.

Knights in the Nightmare

Radiant Historia

Silent Hill Shattered Memories

Solatorobo: Red the Hunter

No More Heroes 1 and 2

Condemned: criminal Origins (and to some extent Condemned 2 but that doesn't work as well as a horror game at some points)

As TC already said Silent Hill Downpour

Silent Hill Homecoming (yeah I said it)

Vanquish

Des Ex HR

Super Scribblenauts

It's not like this gen is lacking in unique, or captivating games. It's just that the onse that are tend not to get any hype or anything.

Its just another mindless zombie game. I feel like we have 50 million of them already. Call Of Duty has zombies for christs sake, RDR has zombies, then you have Dead Rising, Left 4 Dead & Dead island. All mediocre & mindless zombie games.

Maybe if they had more depth other than being a game made for the sake of bashing or shooting never ending hordes of zombies then you might be right. Naughty Dogs The Last Of US might be the one to truly do something unique with Zombies ( or something along the line of Zombies )

I agree with you on everything apart from Dead Space 2. That had awful atmosphere and it's one of the worst games I've ever played. Darkness and monsters don't make a game scary, you also need music and variety.

Im 100% in agreement with TC. For example last year the biggest games were probably Cod, Gears Of War, & Battlefield. I feel like these games are all the same cookie cutter bullsh*t. Games like Deus Ex, Portal, Batman, Uncharted, Skyrim, Skyword Sword all felt unique & warranted a purchase.

There comes a time when you look over at your games & realize all of your games are.... shooters. Typical, mindless shooters. I actually shop now with the mindset that i have to find games that are unique, giving games a try i normally wouldnt think to be my type, or games that may have not gotten much praise.

I have maybe 85% of those games, and I agree. I tend to stay away from the mainstream titles if I can. And btw Homecoming was awful...the worst SH game by far ;)

Discuss.

ShadowsDemon
I know where your coming from. but if you dont want COD, Battlefield etc, dont play them. Or are you complaining that others do want those? Why should others share your tastes in games? Do they not get to have and want their own? You sound very passionate about this. Maybe you should try to proactively solve this issue by making games that are to your liking.

I've long thought that devs make all these FPS because they're easier to make. Less stuff to animate etc.

There are actually many games this generation that do what TC asked. They just aren't the mainstream... here are some of my favorites.

Knights in the Nightmare

Radiant Historia

Silent Hill Shattered Memories

Solatorobo: Red the Hunter

No More Heroes 1 and 2

Condemned: criminal Origins (and to some extent Condemned 2 but that doesn't work as well as a horror game at some points)

As TC already said Silent Hill Downpour

Silent Hill Homecoming (yeah I said it)

Vanquish

Des Ex HR

Super Scribblenauts

It's not like this gen is lacking in unique, or captivating games. It's just that the onse that are tend not to get any hype or anything.

ShadowsDemon

I have maybe 85% of those games, and I agree. I tend to stay away from the mainstream titles if I can. And btw Homecoming was awful...the worst SH game by far ;) QUOTE]

There are other games too. It's not that the games aren't there... It's just that they aren't talked about as often.

Also I'm not saying it's not the worst SH. :P Downpour, Shattered Memories, 2 and 3 (the ones I've played) are all superior in almost every way. (Although like all of them except Downpour the soundtrack for Homecoming is great. I still thought it was good, the atmosphere in certain parts was great. (Like Hell Descent. Very creepy.) It did alot of things wrong but it also did alot of things right.

If you're sick of those games then don't play them. With the massive quantity and variety of games being released, you're bound to find something else you can enjoy.

Discuss.

You do realize that genre diverisity ot experimenting with changes does not go without flaws and if the game is original and has 100 flaws GLARING at you, you shouldn't rate it high just because its original or differnt genre than the majority released. GS did that 5th gen.

Because there are getting less and less that I like. If it weren't for maybe half the games I listed I might have given up on gaming a long time ago.

I guess so, but I'm not a fan of arcade/indie titles. Nor do I like RTS.

Play some European games like Penumbra, Metro 2033 and Stalker. Despite the latter two being shooters, the offer a very unique experience

... Silent Hill: Downpour... Deus Ex: HR... Vanquish... Dead Space 2... Bayonetta... Batman...ShadowsDemon
All games that came out this gen. Every genre won't be the #1 genre of the day where every publisher is green-lighting anything in it. These games still come out though, which is what you and I both want. I don't see the issue. Everything can't be the #1 genre with the lion's share of games coming out for it. By default there can only be 1. Personally, I think there is plenty of variety and people get so caught up in CoD selling 20 million units and tons of FPS games and wanting to complain about them that they actually miss the multitude of varied and niche titles that come out every year.

True, but there are getting less and less. I'm a strange person when it comes to tastes in games, and games such as the ones I mentioned just seem to connect with me unlike anything else. There are so many shooters constantly coming out...so why can't there be similar types of games to these constantly coming out?

i can feel you bro... Too many fraud games this gen... Dunno why... Too many examples too mention... almost 10 COD games in less than 6 years. INSANE milkage... Games like Resident evil 5 being worse than Resident even 4 or Devil may cry 4 being one of the same etc etc Then you have this generation hold for more than 7 years that giving time to companies for even more milkage and one of the same "feeling" in their games. Who wouldnt want to play RE6 , GTA5 , COD:Black Ops 2 , Mass effect 3 , Dead space 3 and so many other games IN NEXT-GENERATION hardware ? Then they wondering why sales are not what they used to.. If games start feeling one of the same over and over again... how they will sale?!! Anyways. 5-6 years cycle MAX is more than enough imho for each gen. As for your main point i agree. There were hidden diamonds among "the milkage elite"
