Is anyone else still holding off on the current gen?

So far I am

The only console I know that I will definately be getting is the Wii. It's cheap. Its specs and controller mean that it'll have the most exclusives by default and it's the winner of this generation so it'll get a steady stream of games as well (far more than the gamecube evver got at least).

In terms of my main games machine I want to get a PS3 but I'm a bit worried about its future. I'm very grateful for the increased level of competition this gen (as it has forced every company to raise its game). It does however mean that the future ofthe PS3 is uncertain. Third parties are still optimistic about the console but i don't think this optimism will remains if it performs as horribly as it did last year.

So who else is waiting for a clearer picture of the situation to emerge befiore they put down the money?

nope. got a 360.

two years have passed already, i dont know how much longer this gen will last, but no console is in any position to flat out fail. Either of the consoles is a good buy at this poit, theres really no reason to hold out anymore.

If the current gen is any indication then there will be a lot of overlap with next gen, and to be honest i'm in no hurry for the next generation of consoles given some of the stuff we're seeing on the PS3. If devs can get so much out of the machine after a year then i cant wait to see what they can do in 5 years time.

One of the biggest tragedies of last gen was that it was killed before its time. We were starting to see devs fully exploit the PS2 with games like VP2, Okami, GOW2 and SOTC. Who knows what other greats we could have seen if the PS2 was still being fully supported

You can thank Microsoft for that. (gasp!)

I've had all 3...

I got the 360 first and I enjoy it quite a bit, bought the Wii second and was throughly disappointed. Sold the Wii and got a PS3 for the Blu-ray flicks since I already have the HD DVD player for the 360. The PS3 is a perfectly fine machine with a couple of games I've liked so far.

This generation of systems is just like the last, there will be some you like and some you don't. But there are some great games out there that deserve to be played.

You are just taking this way too seriously and i actually feel sad for you that you are holding off buying a ps3 to see who is emerging the victor. If you like the ps3 just go ahead and buy it.You are really overarting this whole system wars thing.Neither the 360 nor the ps3 will flat out die and stop producing games no matter what happens.

I own all three, so no, I am not waiting for anything to jump in.

And I don't regret it at all, although I do wish there were more great games on the Wii.

Nope. This gen is good. And Dead Rising looks so much worse on an SDtv than HDtv that it's almost laughable.

Why couldn't they optimize for both? It's really the biggest difference I've seen, I think.

People still holding out on this gen for some reason are the only ones missing out, there are alot of good games out there at the moment, mostly on the 360 and Wii.

It's text size is freaking impossible to see on SD!

On topic: Nope got a Wii and 360. Tons of great games for both, no reason to wait really.

the_h_bomb

I don't get why you're not sure about the ps3 - it did as good WITH competition in it's first yea as 360 did with NO competition, AND it cost more.

That's one of those mass beliefs that caught on somehow that really isn't true - that the ps3 is somehow doing bad.

It's wierd how the hive mind thinks.

But anyway, I own all three. I have more 360 games because it's been out longer. I have about the same amount of ps3 games as I did for the 360 a year ago.

I also have a wii with about the same amount of games.

I expect all platforms to do well, although my prediction is Wii will win, and Sony will take second eventually. The failure rate of 360 is too high.

But if I were just picking one, I guess it would be the Wii, just two, Wii and ps3, or get all three like me.

The 360 failure rate sucks. The RRoD has a warranty, but as discussed in an online post the other day, there are other severe problems that are not covered in the three year warranty, such as dvd problems - 360 was rushed to market. They have the most games because of being out longest. But if I were buying a console today, and didn't have any, I wouldn't be buying two year old games anyway, so I think all three systems are on pretty equall footing, with the 360 failure rate being a little scary if I was only going to have one console.

That's true but i'm just trying to be pragmatic. If The PS3 continues to bomb really hard then third parties will lose confidence in it. If that happens we will start seeing more and more rushed 360 ports and less and less exclusives. That's not an appealing prospect when the damn thing costs so much in the first place

More than 70% of the population only owns an SDTV. Microsoft and Sony effectively ignored them when making the PS3/360 and that's partly why they'll never be able to outsell the Wii

Exactly. They should have just waited til '10 for the next gen. So more people would have HDTV's.

HDTVs are not a requirement to playing games on the PS3 or the 360. As for games like Dead Rising that are slightly hindered on SDTVs, that is the developers fault, not MS or Sony's.

Yeah, but it is REALLY hindered. I don't think I'd want to play it, at least not on the SDtv I tried it on.

Looks FANTASTIC on my tv though. :)

The games + community + the set-top box capabilities were more than enough to get me to buy a 360. Great times, so far. And yes, do want Dead Rising, but do want to be able to read the txt. No HDTV. Am

yeah, let me tell you, NOT having to strain (if even straining is enough for some of it)to read all the text you're sent...necessary.

At first I was holding off, but I got bored of playing Guild Wars and decided to get a Wii. Best decision I ever made gaming-wise, seriously. SMG is tons of fun, and I really feel bad if you don't own a single current-gen console.

Wow, that was really uncalled for. I guess some fangirls are still living in the illusion that the Wii is just a Gamecube with a new coat of paint. I thought this foundation-less argument was broken when SMGOTY came out.

I own a 360 and evn though I have one I feel like im holding off. I rarely buy games for it except sports games. Most of the games I have bought I have taken back already. I feel like this gen is just not what it should have been. I was hoping for more and development time just takes too long now and we dont see games for years.

We are two years into the generation, and realistically you can get all three consoles for about a grand now.

Why wait?

Yep, I borrowed Dead Rising from a friend and I had to stop playing because I couldn't read any of the messages or text on the screen on my SDTV.

I'm holding off buying a PS3 not becase I'm worried of it's future, far from it. The reason I haven't bought a PS3 yet is mostly to do with college (exams) and other important things I have to deal with. Rest assured I will buy a PS3 on the launch of MGS4. I want my 1st play with PS3 to be magical and what better then to play PS3's 1st true killer app and the most anticipated title in the games industry. I reckon by end 08 I will have atleast 7 PS3 titles, although I can name about 10 I want :(

Still just got a PS2 and a Gamecube.

Why NOT wait until a system is cheaper and has more/better games?

I'll tell you why. Online component. Makes the need to play while a game is still "hot" more immediate.

I know a lot of people who feel the same (including me to an extent). There are just too many games i want to play on the PS2. I still haven't completed Okami, Persona 3 and many others. If I buy a next gen console it'll be the start of a whole new array of games, and i don't have a HDTV yet either
