Is being able to skip cut scenes a fundamental right?

I don't get games that don't allow you to do this. I'm looking at you, Far Cry 4. Some of us aren't really invested in the story and just want to get to the meat and potatoes, so to speak. Surely this feature should be added to all future games, right SW?

Not a fundamental right (perspective is necessary when dealing with these questions), but I do think that games should allow us to skip them- at least after our first viewing of them at any rate.

Yes. I think every game should have this option, including beginning intros that have Lobos thrown at you

They should always allow you to skip a cutscene, only reason not to is because the game is loading up the next section during a cutscene but once it's capable of being skipped one should be able to. I like cutscenes you can still hit pause on, and ones where if you hit a button say hold such-n-such button to skip or if you hit pause has a skip option there. I hate when I try to pause a game in a cutscene but it instead skips it because the developers never thought people like to take a break during cutscene moments.

Fundamental right? No. Not that it wouldn't be great to not have to re-watch but it's not that big of a deal either. But fundamental rights generally are from society/government. Not private enterprises of which game devs/pubs are.

yes it is. a developer who doesn't allow you to skip a cutscene should be hauled in front of the internaltional court of human rights and made to answer for their horrific crime.

as for developers who dont let you skip the quick intro videos (publisher logo...etc). no trial. no jury. just hunt them down :P. j/k.

No, it isn't a right.

But it would be nice to have the option after the first playthrough.

Pretty sure Jefferson had skippable cutscenes in the first draft but that damn Alexander Hamilton made him take it out. This is one more reason no one likes Hamilton.

Damn the founding fathers were smart.

Even back then they predicted the need for skipping cutscenes in video games. 200 years before video games even existed. :O

I hate it some times that games dont let you skip cutscenes.

But i know why they do that most times, to hide the loading times.

Pressing start pauses the cutscene. You're met with a screen that says "skip" and "continue". That's how it should be for every game ever.

I'm all for people doing what they want but I think on an initial play through that cut-scenes should be mandatory. It bugs me so much when people just skip through the entire basis for the game, its narrative and story... I remember I had some friends who were playing Max Payne just after it came out and I wanted to strangle them as I watched them just spam buttons to skip through the graphic novel cut-scenes...

It should be.

If I already played through once I might not want to watch the cutscenes again.

Or what happens if I saved right before a cutscene and I keep dying during the part after....like some checkpoints are.

Annoying.

A fundamental right? Come on, dude. get over your entitlement. Just because you hate it doesn't mean you have a right to never be subjected to it. If someone wants to make a game with unskippable cutscenes, then they can fucking make a game with unskippable cutscenes. People who hate it are free to not buy the shit. I mean, seriously, no one's making you buy the shit.

Having said that, making games with unskippable cutscenes is BULLSHIT, so I totally agree that that practice needs to fucking die. And yeah, I get it..."blah blah blah...story...blah...vision...blah blah...artists don't make cutscenes for no reason." Here's the thing: you don't have to make gamers have to see the cutscene EVERY TIME. Like, there's gotta be a way to put a checkpoint IMMEDIATELY AFTER the cutscene so that gamers can access that checkppoint (and skip the cutscene) after viewing the cutscene once.

And even more to the point: if gamers want to skip your cutscene that badly, then doesn't that sort of indicate that your cutscene sort of SUCKS? It's like when David Lynch released Mulholland Dr on DVD and deliberately left out chapter select options because his work was so profound that he didn't want people skipping ahead to the lesbian nude scenes. **** you, David Lynch. Get real. Regardless of how awesome those lesbian nude scenes might have been, no one's buying that DVD just to see Naomi Watts and Laura Harring caress each other's boobs. If anyone's buying your movie, it's because they like it as a total package. And if by some chance anyone IS buying your movie and just skipping ahead to the lesbian nude scenes, then that just indicates that they think that the rest of the movie SUCKS. Stop making people have to do the part that sucks. If your game cutscenes are so unengaging that gamers want to skip the cutscenes on their first playthrough, then that probably means that your cutscenes suck and you need to get better at making good cutscenes.

But this all just goes to something that I've been complaining about for a while: pointless bullshit repetition. Another example: shitty save systems that don't let you manually save whenever you want. And yes, generally speaking, those are BOTH just bullshit ways of forcing repetition. If I already saw a cutscene, stop making me have to watch it again. If I already cleared a particular area, stop making me have to clear it again.

So yeah, it actually boggles my fucking mind how gamers loathe unskippable cutscenes yet apparently have zero problem (or actually think it's GOOD) when games have shitty-ass save systems that force gamers to replay shit that they already played. Because in my mind, it's EXACTLY the same thing. YES, that kind of crap is total fucking bullshit.

Having said that, NO it's not a fundamental right. It might be bullshit, but it's not like you have a RIGHT to have every developer avoid doing it just because it sucks ass.

Yes there should be an option to skip cutscenes. I normally watch all the cutscenes in the game, even when replaying the game but skip them if main character dies and cutscene reappears after I load last checkpoint.

Depending on the style of gameplay, it may be better to give a cutscene to show exactly what the dev wants the player to see to advance the story instead of player controlled where it might not have the same effect

I understand making them unskippable upon the initial playthough. Anytime after that however, there's no excuse in not making them skippable.

@paradocs: The example I would think of is in MGS with sniper wolf. The cutscene has better cinematography than if you were still in a gameplay view and otacon just rolls in. I just think cutscenes allow for a greater artistic vision, there are some that are bad, but there are some that are done very well

The French revolted for things like this.

But yeah, I really wished I could've skipped the cutscene before the third Seymour fight in FFX. That would've been great.
