personally i think the moves in smash are practically anti-mashy

theres so much interactivity involved with a lot of the moves

either hold it, tap it, hold and release with good timing

not to mention if you dont know what the buttons actually do, you don't know which moves are good for recovery

the biggest problem is spam , stuff like pikachu, but any skilled opponent knows howto counter spam

"I don't see why "sheep" think this game is deep...because it's not."

sheep needs quotes?

"haters" think the game is not deep, but fail to realize deep gameplay doesn't involve memorizing complex button sequences

its definately easy for a noob to learn, but i wouldn't say it takes 20 mins to master... some pros you'll never be able to master, let alone cpu on punishing difficulty

Maybe not a button masher but it's definately one of the most simple fighters out there. Anyone can learn to play the game good enough to stand a chance in maybe 10 or 15 minutes. :| I don't see why "sheep" think this game is deep...because it's not.

Not sure. I know you'll get your ass kicked if you try to mash buttons against any hard-leveled computer or against a skilled player, because I get my ass kicked and I don't button mash!

no... just no. makes me wonder if you ever even played the game.

and if you did, you were probably bad at it. there's no way someone that played the game for 10-15 minutes will stand a chance against a good player. i would wipe the floor with them :)

IMO, no. Brawl may be a button masher for a group of people who have never played a Super Smash Brothers game. But if you're like me and my friends, who've played Super Smash Brothers since the first one, then all of us know how to play the game and it's not a button masher. Though for all you Wii haters, Yahtzee Reviews: Super Smash Brothers Brawl He basically says everything that this topic is about.

If you take the time to become good at it,in which case it is very deep and competitive, then no,it is far from a button-masher.

If you expect it to be a button-masher and,conversely,button-mash just to prove that you're right to yourself,it is a button-masher.

My brawl code is 399566291842...if you have live add me...killab2oo5. :] Then we can talk while we fight. Tell me,what's so hard about Smash Bros that stops you from learning the game well enough to hold your own against people who play the game more? You can win from luck by using items. The game is fun...but it doesn't take a mastermind to be good at it.

furthest thing from a button masher possible

a beginner has no chance against an experienced player if items are turned off

APOLLOCJD

That's like saying a beginner has no chance against an expert if he can't use a rocket launcher....If your so pro make those claims without any "ifs" or "buts"

Yes Brawl is definetly a sort of button masher, you obviously won't become the best player ever but I think to the general user it most definetly is.

ok sure

a beginner literally has no chance against an experienced player, even with items on - happy now?

items do bring a little bit of randomness into the mix (assist trophies/final smash/poke balls), and thats why they aren't used in competitive play. often times online, people will turn items off just to get rid of the randomness factor they bring to the table. but i'm still confident that i'd beat any beginner handidly, even with items, ten times out of ten.

it's far from a button masher. and based on some of the comments in this thread (ex. the guy who claims you can just use bowser's stomp + kirby's rock to win  ), i'm starting to think that the people who do call it a button masher just don't know how to play the game all that well.

I wouldnt really call smash bros a button masher. Games like tekken and Soul calibur are so cramped that both characters are constantly fighting, there is very little in the way of manoeuvring so the tactic that most new players have is simply to button mash as attacking is all they can do.

Smash Brawls environments are far larger so the ability to button mash is decreased because the other player can more easily dodge your attacks and move around you. Whereas regular fighters only have you attack in one direction in smash bros you can be attacked from above, below, right and left so the only way to attack players is to attack them in the right direction, something that button mashing doesnt account for as it just sees you mushing the face buttons.

While you can of course button mash in smash bros (and get away with it at points, just like other fighters) the added effects of the environment, the items and the need to stay on the field rather than simply protect your health bar make it a fighter that is perhaps not as adapt to button mashing as I think most realise.

It can be turned into one, it depends on how people play and button mashers dont last long against people who actually play correctly. If you dodge and block, it becomes really interesting and fun.

A good post. I agree with this guy. Brawl CAN be turned into a button masher, but it hardly ever is.

its not.. since each person only has about 8 differnt moves, you have to be stupid to not know what attack youre going to do when youre pressing buttons.VendettaRed07

That makes no sense; Less combos makes for easier execution.

To me a button masher is a game where you can beat the game solely by randomly mashing buttons. If its a fighter, it means you can beat a good player by randomly mashing buttons. A good Brawl player will slaughter a button masher.

I guess it depends on how you play it

1 on 1: not even close to one

2 on 2: nope

4 person free for all on a small map: it can be especially with items and or comps

To be a button masher, you can win without having any skill, and you can win without having any strategy.

So it's not.

Great amounts of time you need to practice with one character to be able to use it properly.

I don't see how since the concept and goal plays out completely different. Items are randomizers, not balancers. They just add more variables to combat. That's not really a "bad" thing (Hell, I play with items on once and awhile) but it keeps the game from being character vs character.

The community is what makes a game competitive, fyi. Besides, both Melee and Brawl require two different mindsets that doesn't make either one less competitive. If there was a factor that hurts Brawl competitively, it'd be tripping.

If you want to play competitive with a conventional fighter, play those fighters.

You should play Smash Bros. the way it was designed for, with big explosions.

Brawl isn't a button masher. Rather than waste your time, I'll divide it into a simple chart:

n00bs: button masher

meh gamers: items items items

pro: block/attack

Willy105

Smash was designed to be modifiable. If there was only one "right way" to play, it would be default with no possible changes. Since there is no "right way", it's best that you stop right there.

what i meant is if you turn off every single items you create a fair and balanced game. final smashes are cheap and unbalanced. for example. super sonic or wario man, they last long enough to kill a guy, and then after that guy respawns, kill him again, while ike's or ganondorf's final smash can only take out 1 round of people.

Nope it's not. Turn off items and pick a decent stage, the game becomes mostly skill (tripping occurs by chance).

It isn't. If you have played it against anyone that's fairly good you know that you can't win by randomly pressing the A and B buttons, that's simply impossible, unless you are lucky and get all the items you can. People who say it is either haven't played the series yet or are just awful players that face no good competition.
