In a way Nintendo has a point with their games and marketing being towards the more casual gamers. It is a good business strategy and like it or not Nintendo dont care about the 25% of the market that want hardcore games rather care for the other 75% of the audience that'll get the wii for a game or two. Now I only have 2 games on my wii and have like 10 on my 360, but all the companies just look at the money not loyalness.

IMO what Nintendo is doing, catering to only the casual market will run gaming into the ground. If Sony and MS pick up this buisness model next gen than I see PC gaming exploading due to many people who will look for not "hardcore" but games that they loved during the previous eras of gaming. No one in their right mind can call PS2 a hardcore console becouse it had everything why Nintendo is not trying to emulate that success I have no idea.

Casual has been the way foward since the PS1 days. Nintendo is just making a point of admitting it.

Dangerous strategy though. Nintendo, while attracting casual players, are not transforming them into hardcore players.

A wrong move with their next console and they can be gone as quickly as they came. They don't NEED to game and a great deal of them won't have any reservations from abstaining next-generation if Nintendo can't bring the same low-cost, innovative package to the table.

The hardcore crowd however will always be around, they'll simply flock to the systems which offer them the most.

Eh Nintendo didn't have the online structure needed to attract the hardcore audience this generation anyway. Maybe they'll put something in place for their next console.

It's a good strategy for Nintendo, but for us real gamers I'd say it's a step in the wrong direction. I mean really, who should we the gamers care more about? Nintendo or ourselves?

Nintendo can go shell out more casual trash, but Im not supporting Nintendo in it. So I got rid of my Wii.

How is $250 "casual"? It sounds like an investment to me, despite the massive sales. Also, for casual gamers, the big problem is that they may not use their console for weeks or months. It's a dust collector that gets pulled out when spare time becomes available. However, being casual means you might find something else to do with your free time than play a game. I know three people (all in families with kids) that own a Wii & none of them ever play it or talk about it. It sounds like a fad to me.

No a balance will be successful. The truth is if Nintendo doesnt prove they can deliver on the software side with 3rd party and deeper games they will have alot of trouble on the Wii 2 when the next MS and Sony console have casual friendly games as well as plenty deeper games.

Unfortunately it looks like it. Nintendo is making tons of money so I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft and Sony followed the same path next generation. They may not focus their systems on casual gamers but they will start caring about them and constantly creating games that cater to them.

in a round about way, i think so. The bigger the gaming market is, the more credibilty it will have as a cultural force, like cinema or music. Although a lot of casual games have as much cultural significance as a board game, the more people that start to play games will realise the mediums potential on a variety of levels. Once gamers are able to fully shed the stereotype of basement dwelling loners that shoot up schools (which it hasn't at all, just watch Glenn Beck) people will appreciate video games as both an entertaiment and art, or maybe a little of both.

So even though most "core" gamers can't stand crap like wii sports/play/fit/music/cleaning, it sort of is a gateway drug into the gaming world. I think that's perfectly alright.

Actually, 3rd parties are starting to change. Look at EA's announcement that they made a mistake in not supporting the Wii more. Look at their fiscal reports. Despite making a lot of revenue on the 360 and PS3, they have been in the red for 6 straight quarters. That's a lot of money lost despite having so much sales on the two HD consoles.

As a matter of fact, unless Nintendo screws up the launch of their next console a la PS3, they are probably the favorites to win it and to get the most support. 3rd parties won't be caught with their pants down again this time.

It was the same during the PS1 and PS2 days. Great games like Final Fantasy XII took years before they came out.

Why cancel a good project just to release more of the same? I don't care if gamers love GH, I enjoy playing it but I'd rather get a new(er) game than just another expansion pack.

Appealing to the mainstream audience while ****ing the "core" audience over just isn't kosher.

Are you associating the cancelation of a game due to casuals? Where's the proof in that? It's quite possible that Activision Blizzard is taking more of Blizzard's philosophy in canceling bad games and only releasing good games... of course, I could be infinitely wrong about this. But a game's cancellation can have many reasons. I just don't see how you can make the claim that it's the casuals' fault that the game was canceled.

Activision's cancelling of the project was most likely due to them foreseeing it not selling well considering the audience it would (not) attract. It's not the casual's fault, it's Activision's fault for appealing to the casuals. Time for some reading comprehension.

Wait, so your argument is that SE waited 5 years to release FFXII... onto the PS2? Huh? That doesn't make any sense. Look at Gears of War 2. The last Gears of War was in 2006. It took them 2 years to make Gears of Wars 2. Hardcore games take time to release.

Look at Nintendo's releases. Super Paper Mario, Fire Emblem, Battalion Wars 2, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros, Metroid Prime 3, and Mario Kart Wii. These were released within a year and a half. The earliest release was a year ago with Super Paper Mario. After one year, people are already expecting another hardcore game from the same team? Where's the logic in that?

So wait, you want them to be a charity and just release games at a loss? I wonder if you're the one who is being unreasonable in this case. Plus, great games that don't sell also is a consequence to gamers. It means that the game is very likely not to get a sequel. Just look at games like Shenmue 3, Psychonauts, and Okami. Great games that will never see another iteration due to low sales. Low sales also affect gamers, as much as you would like to dismiss it.

anyway, i use my Wii alot more than i use my ps3, thats for sure.

also, how can most peoples Wii's collect dust when it sells almost as much software as the 360?

your only points of discussion are blind assumptions, while i show you facts...

Where's the logic in that?

yea its true, they wait to release FF something, but GEOW 2 have a moddified version of the unreal engine, that was mod when UT08 come, they wait to a new engine

Why they didnt release Super Paper Mario, Fire Emblem, Battalion Wars 2, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros, Metroid Prime 3, and Mario Kart Wii, they could have release them on GC right? but they didnt, or are you saying that the wii doesnt have the graphics? obviously they wait the next console because they maaaybe tought that the new console would be better

True. It's funny how certain fanboys come up with selective amnesia when discussing the casualization of gaming. ;)

The best selling Wii games aren't casual.

PS2 became popular with GTA3, MGS2, Tekken etc. so you're wrong, they didnt make PSportsgame with no difficulty level so little jimmy can have fun with aunt margaret.

Also PS1 had FF7, Resident Evil, etc.

How is linking a bunch of opinated articles fact? IMO Mario Kart Wii is the best game to come out this year, and I know I've been gaming longer than that guy who wrote the article.

your 'facts' having nothing to do with your assumptions... well, actually one works against you. why post a link of Wiifit shortages when talking about how nobody uses the Wii? thanks for helping my argument

also, the mario kart thing is not a fact, its an opinion. learn the difference, genius

Wrong PS2 built on the success of PS1.

PS1 became popular by having games with CGI cutscenes and diluted gameplay, along side all the shovelware.

And GTA is casual and Tekken is a button masher(except for maybe the real arcade versions).

So you agree that hardcore games take time to make... right? Otherwise, I'm not really getting your argument.

Even if your theory is correct, it doesn't refute the fact that it takes time to make hardcore games. It's been a year since the earliest release in that line up. Are you really expecting the same team to release another game within a year? That doesn't make sense.

Casual isn't bad. It brings new people into "gaming" as a whole, and many of these people will grow accustomed to the superior hardcore gaming as the years progress.

dude, read it all: "Nintendo profits rise by 48%, so we call this a success, but how does this "want to buy and hate to use" product affect the image of exergaming" any question?
