To me it comes across like bioshock...decent game but rental at best. Can someone that has played it let me know if it's worth buying and why? What is the replayability of the game?

I love a game that can scare you (like condemned), but I never replay them as the scare is gone after you know the story and action points.

Taken from IGN

"You'll have to play through the game multiple times to improve your gear and understand the full story."

Well, if you paid $60 for Gears of War then with Dead Space you will get a game that is about 3-4 times as long.

Like myself, xbox 360 hasn't been connected to live in like 9 months. It let me catch up on all the single player experience I have been missing out on and it feels great.

Well, when a games main selling point is multiplayer, you shouldn't be buying it expecting a 30 hour campaign...

I have no plans to ever get Live Gold at all... the singleplayer experiences are more than enough for myself, especially for the fact aside from Call of Duty and Day of Defeat on PC (and probably Left 4 Dead) I don't like multiplayer games at all.

And for me, back when I played Gears at a friend's house, the 6-7 hour campaign was not enthralling enough for me to ever want to play it again. Heck, when I got my 360, it came with two free games, Gears and DOAX2, I used Gears to get Mass Effect for $40 cheaper and kept DOAX2... that's how little I cared for the game after playing through it once. Heck, I'm actually enjoying DOAX2 right now.

Dead Space is going to eat my face as soon as I get it... it's unfortunate I have to wait until I finish a paper and a couple midterms.

Ditto. If a single player action avdenture game can keep me occupied for 10 hours, that's a good value. A typical 10 hour game usually keeps me occupied for 12 to 15 hours because I take my time to enjoy all that the developers put into the game, and usually on the hardest difficulty settings. Plus most games require multiple playthoughs to get all the single player achievements. I don't ever cheat, and I don't ever use hint guides or walkthoughs.

Why does that even matter? The time is going to vary completely depending on you, anyway. For example, I am playing through on the hard setting right off the bat, and taking my time exploring everywhere, so that equals alot of time lollygagging about, and alot of deaths, lol... Well, not too many to start with, but I can see it happening. :D

By the way, this is a really phenomenal game so far. Zero-G, space walks, etc.... just a visual joy-fest, and creepy to boot. :)

Game has no multiplayer

Usually games with no MP i rent

Mkavanaugh77

Ditto. No MP means 2-3 playthroughs then trade in. Unless there is an extensive challenge mode or something.

You could just wait a while and pick up a used copy.

I completely agree, but what is the replayability of this great single player? For example, bioshock = rental. Condemned = rental (even though I loved it I just don't see myself playing it again).

Ninja Gaiden though....I played that 3 times. It was just as fun the 2nd time as the first.

Rent it for now, then buy it later when it's cheaper.

For me, there's just far too many games coming out I'd rather buy then this and I have a tight budget when it comes to video games.

Tough call. I was initially saying rental because I really wanted to play it. For some stupid reason, my Blockbuster doesn't carry it. I bought it. I'm glad I did.

I do liken it to Bioshock. I played that game through like 8 times.

I've been playing Shadow of the Colossus on and off since I got it in December 2006 and have beaten the main story 11 times. No multiplayer there, just tons of replay value, the same might be said for Dead Space, you never know. Multiplayer doesn't give *everyone* reason to own a game.

Gears 1 is about 12 hours on the harder difficulty settings. Unlike MGS4 which is 5 hours without the cutscenes, or Heavenly Short Sword, which is like 4 hours total.

People in glass houses...

WillieBeamish

I played Gears on Hardcore with a friend and it took us 8 hours to finish the campaign. I can see maybe on Insane by yourself taking 12 but Gears is a *really* short game with absolutely no replayability... once you've played it once, you've seen it all. MGS4 was designed to be a game driven by narrative, not shooting stuff... Gears has the story complexity of a restaurant menu.

I don't think I could ever put 1000 hours into Dead Space like I have Gears.senses_fail_06

I probably put around 600 hours into GT3 and another 500-550 into GT4. Both fully singleplayer games. If Dead Space has replay value, it could easily get that kind of playtime as well in theory... multiplayer is of no value to people who don't enjoy it. Only if a game is designed as a multiplayer-only game, like Day of Defeat or Counter Strike, can you then derive a games "value" from the multiplayer. Gears is designed with both singleplayer and multiplayer in mind, thus the value comes from both.
