I so want this game but I'm still hesitating. I've got a few question about the online part. Do you have any influence on who is able to invade your game? Like from what region those people are? Can you tell if he's from the other side of the world? Is lag a problem then?nethernova

Nope, you have no control over who and you never know when it will happen. There are 5 HUGE worlds in the game with 4 sections each. After you get through the tutorial as you are walking into the fog all of the keystones that lead to the first section of each world are open and you can go in any order you like. After you beat a section, the next section to that world is unlocked and so forth. Only players who are within a 10 level range of you can invade your game as a black phantom.

Trust me, in a game where one mistake in a fight, a wrong turn into a trap, or a misstep on a ledge or narrow bridge can often times lead to an instant death, having someone break into your game at any time stalking you in the shadows in already incredibly challenging levels adds a level of immersion you would be hard pressed to find elsewhere. Of course, after you recive a blackeye stone by defeating a black phantom (even one of the game's NPC black phantoms) you can do the same to other players as well. So, all is fair game here.

Yes, I like how the PvP works, I was only worried about people from far away bringing lag into the game. I did some more research though and it seems that everbody is sitting on the same server anyway and there's no P2P so it shouldn't be an issue where the opponents are from. I'd still prefer a european version but I guess actually waiting for it won't gain me anything.

Sony would be crazy not to release it in the States... It's one of the few new IP's that looks absolutely stunning to me.

Nerd_Man

It's a amazingly complex, deep, and challenging game.

Its not exactly a new IP however, technically it's a spinoff of the King's Field series.

While I love me a challenging game and something that makes my wins feel rewarding, I must say, for it's type of genre, I don't really think dying from one or two hits is something I look forward to in my RPGs. When I think RPGs, I think of leveling up, fantasy and impossible like realms that don't exist but are fun to visit, and over the top zany action/stories mostly. So I dunno if I'd care too much for that game. It could be fun and rewarding. but I don't want to be level 40 and have the same skeleton summon or soldier knight come and kill me with a single blow tot he head or something still.

Seems VERY hardcore in as far 'difficulty' and 'patience'. If Sony doesn't announce a NA version I'm importing it :D!!! Really excited for this.

Are you confusing hardcore with niche and mature?

Bigboi500

Considering what I've been reading about this game... it is hardcore just like Ninja Gaiden, Contra, Battletoads and Ghouls 'n Ghosts on the NES. Except that its hard by design, not by limited design capabilities.

I hope you're right because THAT's the kind of hardcore game I could get into, unlike the games you mentioned being called hardcore but really just being cheap and frustrating.

There is, if you import the Hong Kong or Korean version of the game. As far as being the most hardcore, I would say it's definitely a contender. I love the game. I've heard things about NG2, but people say it's also full of cheap deaths while Demon's Souls is never cheap and still mega-hard.

Yeah and it sucks I imported this from yesasia.com or whatever its called in the begging of April....i won't get it til June 12 as they have been SOLD OUT from popularity of people importing it... NOOOOOOOOOO....

imagine ff 13 if that has english dubs and subs.

Eh... all this dying in one hit appeals to a bunch of people I'm sure, but to me these games are just frustrating. xD I couldn't even survive Ninja Gaiden 2 before giving up at like chapter 5 or 6 or something like that.

Exactly, people need to understand it is not just some hack 'n slash either. This game is purely about you learning tactics and getting better by virtue of your own skill and knowing when and how to use what. This game will beat you to death with your own failure over and over until you figure out why you keep dying and then challenges you, dares you to overcome it. Like the Eurogamer review said, "It is all about facing the impossible...and winning." Therein lies the addiction and incredible immersion this game provides.

I read that review just before my copy arrived in the mail (and I scored it at $45!) and I must say, I've never seen a professional review so accurately describe a game. The part you quoted is just so perfect. For those that keep questioning if hardcore = cheap deaths, perhaps most of the traditional "hardcore" games are like that, but the reason for this discussion is because this game maintains a high degree of difficulty but never feels like it was cheap. Yeah, you can die in one or two hits from a boss, but then again, they're giant monsters. They SHOULD be killing you in one hit- there's none of that pansy, "keep the gamer alive, despite the fact that the boss is 20x his size," mentality in this game. You adapt or you die. Just so you guys realize how common death is, well, in my first 5 hours, I died roughly 50 times. Not a single one was a cheap death; I should've known better and been more cautious. You can't just go in guns-a-blazing or anything. You have to be smart and cautious and play your role (I'm a thief, but in the beginning I tried to just hack people to death....I really had to work on my parrying and dodging so I could backstab). It took me 8 hours to complete 1-1. Think about that for a minute. There's a huge number of games that you could beat in less time than that and I spent that much time just completing the first section of the game. The thing that I think makes this game the most hardcore isn't just the constant dying, but the fact that when you die, you lose all of your souls. You can replay the level and find the area you died and reclaim them, but if you die before that, those souls are lost. If you don't know, souls are everything in this game. They upgrade your weapons, repair them, buy new spells and miracles, and they allow you to level up. So when you need 10k souls for leveling up and you've got 9,000 at the moment, you are ULTRA cautious about your actions. This is the only game where I sort of fear dying because you could potentially lose a lot. I can't think of another game where I feared death inside the game because it never mattered. Here it matters, and that's why this game is so damn hardcore.

PS3. All you need to do is read the review from Eurogamer. That should help you decide. Also look on YouTube for some videos. This game sounds so amazing.

Calling it hard is an understatement. As someone who has the game, I'll tell you that it will kick you and the nads and take your lunch money. Demon's Soul actually makes you deeply think about how you approach a situation. When you finally are victorious, accomplishment is incredibly sweet.

So, a hardcore game is cheap/hard game?

Silverbond

There is nothing cheap about Demon's Souls. You will never lose a battle or die because the game "cheated" you. If you die, you earned it. Just like if you win. You earn it.

But the difficulty level is just one aspect of the game, though its one that stands out. The other aspects are so deep its mind blowing... stats, souls, the huge range of weapons, tactics, the exploration, item farming, upgrading, are insane.... and then you have the multiplayer aspect, that blends seamlessly into the single player game... and the world tendancys that change the whole makeup of levels, NPCs, enemys, drops... the depth is mind blowing.

Its not a game for everyone by any means... but thats the point. This is THE hardcore gamers game of this gen so far.

I think with a little marketing, Demon's Souls could do fairly well in the US. Not a Halo by any stretch, but enough to turn a good profit, and justify a port. It's sad that we will prolly never see a US/EU retail version. At least From Software were kind enough to make the non-Japan Asian versions in full English. :)

HANDS DOWN... So far...

Although I'm not a hardcore player myself, but I'm mostly speaking for my hardcore gamer friends who didn't have Gamespot account, & whotasted the game extensively enoughXD

You can check out my review of the game itself at my page to get a glimpse of the game if you are NOT familiar with the game, or heck, you NEVER even heard of the game...

One thing's for sure, you'll have high chances of fretting, complaining, cursing or weeping if you decide to play this game... Definitely... (& if you are really just messing around...)

Unless, like any other champs who love hardcore stuffs, you'll find this game awfully rewarding, and worth your wallet^^

BTW it WAS meant for hardcore Japanese gamers, that's why the Asia versiongot released first waybefore the NA version... The Asia version has Chinese and English in it, so yeah, either one youget would be still the same.

It's the most punishing, but I don't think it's the most hardcore.

Alot of people hate it but Madden or some other sports game is probably the most hardcore. The controls are pretty difficult to wrap your head around because they are incredibly deep and they change up radically depending on your position, whether you're on offense or defense, whether the ball has been snapped and whether or not you've crossed the line of scrimmage. You can't just pick up Madden and start playing or you'll be making massive mistakes, choosing the wrong plays, accidentally calling audibles and probably be unable to even run or pass the ball, or play defense with any type of effectiveness. On top of that, you still have to actually learn the basics of football strategy.

The only hard thing i've heard about Demon Soul's is that if you die you have to start from the beginning of a dungeon. The controls seems pretty easy to grasp and the gameplay seems like something you can wrap your head around after a few minutes.

The more difficult it is, the more hardcore it is?

Legend_KilIer_

That makes sense to me. I can't imagine an easy game being considered hardcore unless you mean hardcore as in bad ass.

Mega Man 9 would like a word with you.

Demon's Soul will be a sleeper hit, much like Ico and Shadow of The Colussus was a sleeper hit. And yes, it has been announced for fall of 09 in NA.

No. Sacred 2 demands MUCH more time and effort then demon souls. It may be easier but it doesn't take 500 hours in demon souls to reach top level

Completed Demon's Souls a few days ago. If you think the game is hard the first time through, wait till you get to New Game +, which increases the games difficulty immensely. The ending was so completely atmospheric that it really immersed me into the whole story, no matter which ending you choose. But beware, if you take the bad ending, you will feel guilty about it.

Is it like a Lilith date simulator bad ending or a Silent Hill bad ending?

Man, this game sounds great, but also overwhelming. Steep, difficult learning curves, like those in KZ2 and Wipeout, are definitely unpleasant. But they do pay off, and may make you better as a gamer. Looks like a purchase to me, though I'll regret it in the short term.;)

Just hearing about this game makes it seem better than uncharted 2, even with inferior graphics.;)
