Is Doom the only gaming franchise where each and every game is Masterpiece?

Hello friends,

So i have looking into like every other franchise. and every series has atleast one bad game or black sheep or a game that is good but not as good as other. Even Half life has episode 1 which suck imo.

Enter Doom, there are 4 main games and all 4 main games has been masterpieces for thier respected era.

Doom 1 and 2 might be dated for today standard but in 1993 Doom was just something really new. pretty much pioneer FPS genre and released at a time when there were no or very little 3D games at all. although wolf 3d was first FPS but Doom was the game that pretty much invented the genre.

Doom 3 released in 2004 and was masterpiece along with Half life 2. it was Half life equivalent and when i first played it. i was blown away. it was dark, horror, scary and very different approach to original games.

Then Doom reboot released in 2016 and become easily best game of this generation and also best FPS of decade. amazing game, back to original roots with some modern mechanics althought it should not be arena lockdown but its combat is so so great that it never feel boring.

Now this fall. Doom Eternal is releasing (RIP fall 2019) and taking more crazy approach, the first modern Doom game set on earth and looks and feel so amazing. demons are destructable, dashing mechainics, grappling, climb via pole etc. another Doom game that feel like masterpiece.

I cannot think of any other gaming franchise that has all games equally amazing.

@ghosts4ever: Doom 3 was kinda meh. Had some good stuff though. Doom 2016 was good, just became very mundane towards the end and the platforming sections were a drag.

DOOM 3 a masterpiece? To each his own, I guess.

Generally I know of very few franchises that can make the claim of being a masterpiece if they have 3 or more installments. And that may be a comment on being unable to live up to their own pedigree, or at least the perceptions of their fans.

Never finished Doom 3. That's how disinterested I was in the game.

it was rival to Half life 2 back in 2004.

it was most unnecessarily hated game of all time while it was both critical and commercial success.

Doom 2 has some shit levels compared to Doom. And some of the map packs like Final Doom are a dip in quality.

Generally speaking the original Doom is the best in quality, with Doom 64 a close second.

While Doom 3 is nowhere near as bad as people love to make out, it's not really a Doom game. But still a solid action/horror shooter.

And you think its a better horror game then RE2, Haunted House on the Atari 2600 is a better horror game then Doom 3, and I enjoyed Doom 3.

Being that re2 is actually a horror game that makes you feel help less and doom 3 is an action game about strifing and shooting.

Doom 64 and Doom 3 were a bit meh but the rest are certainly enjoyable. Wouldn't go as far to say masterpieces though.

I honestly don’t know how one can go with life with such limited scope for enjoying the wonderful world of video games but to each their own I guess. ?‍♂️

@kingtito: it being a masterpiece can't be argued being that it elevated the popularity of fps. Every game being a masterpiece clearly can be question because doom 3 is far from that.

Doom 3 was generally thought as a pretty bad/mediocre game, your personally preference doesn’t really matter here... otherwise change your thread title to “is doom the only franchise that I think is a masterpiece”

All of Max Payne games are masterpieces.

Max Payne 1 was masterpiece. MP2 was disappointing sequel but 3 was amazing too.

I kinda agree but MP2 is easily worst in series.

I couldn't bring myself to continue to play Doom 3, I am slowly working my way through DOOM but I'm still having a lot more fun playing Zombie Army Trilogy.

All F-Zeros are fantastic.

as much as i really liked dishonored 1. i was dissapointed by dishonored 2. instead of stealthy focus, it went full action and has super power and then starting focus on witches.

Doom 1&2 = Complete Trash. 1/10. There is no enjoyment in those games. They sucked in the 90’s and they are even worse now.

Doom 3 = Decent 6/10 game. On the right track. This is almost a good game.

Doom(2016) = An actual great 8/10 game. This is ID softwares first great game they ever made. Congrats on them for finally making something good.

They were overrated by fanboys like you for many years, but they can be proud of Doom(2016).

No because the latest Doom game wasnt even close to being a masterpiece, it was OK at best. A slightly repetitive wave shooter with pointless executions, no proper mod support and the level editor is absolutely pathetic. Doom 3 was fairly good for its time and it did have proper mod support and a version of Radiant that was a slight step up from Q3Radiant with which you could make complex levels, but that game was no masterpiece either.

I agree, no mod support was a massive oversight. But expected, it's a console game.

I disagree Max Payne 2 is the best in the series the combat feels so good still to this day the ragdolls are crazy in it which makes it really fun. It's one of the first games to use Havok's physics even before HL2 it also has one of the best reload animations ever.

Doom 3 was an international flight away from being a masterpiece. How are you going to place me in the future on Mars without a flashlight attachment on my gun? I'm still pissed about that all these years later, that was just dumb. For that fact alone I never bothered to play it beyond the first 30 minutes, even when some good samaritan fixed that later that year it was too late.

Shit that should be gameplay happening in a non-interactive cutscene is a sign of a garbage game.

ID even ended up stealing the gravity gun in an expansion pack, and made it not fun to use. Absolute geniuses, i tell you.

Doom was a masterpiece it gave the world a game they didn't know they wanted till they played it. Doom 2 was a masterpiece it showed the world why killing your friends (Doom 2 was all about MP) was a good idea.

Doom 3 was shit. Doom remake (re-imagining?) was okay. So yeah, another spectacular fail thread by ghost. What next from him? Rage 2 the most imaginative shooter of all time? (given that it looks generic as f***) yeah, that's my guess.

Doom 3 was not at the level of a doom game. Not a bad game but a bad doom game.

I am the only one that like the Doom 3 more than all the other Doom's, btw I still love all the other Doom games

I'd probably say Elder Scrolls, Wolfenstein and Halo, but there is a few of each I never played so can't confirm every last release, but I've played majority and all are masterpieces.

Man you got me thinking... Doom is a great choice.

I also think Dead Space had 3 gems... and even the spin off Extraction was the best on-rail shooter I ever played... and I love house of the dead.

Phantasy Star comes close.... but 3 is a bit of a reach to call a master piece. And the online version muddy it up.

I'm not a fan of the early monster hunter games.

I want to Elder Scrolls could be on this list too... but I only started at morrowind.

Personally, impact at the time of release is important to me for a game to be considered a masterpiece. I don't think any Doom game after Doom 1 and 2 ever came close. In fact, I don't think there is any other game around which was so popular that employees were staying at work after hours and using company PCs and LANs to play their MP matches. The networks bogged down so bad and productivity plummeted that IT had to consider the games as a threat. The two games even infiltrated pretty high up the management chain. Imagine my surprise to find Doom installed on the PCs of the upper echelons at one military base.

Reading about it now is so far apart from experiencing it firsthand. I loved it though. The later Dooms? They don't even come close.

RE2 is more of console game than Doom is. Doom on console and PC is different experience.

DOOM 1 & 2 I'd agree are masterpieces. DOOM 1 was just amazing when it came, and DOOM 2 was an amazing sequel.

DOOM 3 is a really good game and so is DOOM 2016. Masterpieces they are not.

but i consider 3 and 2016 a masterpiece too. since nowadays they play better.

althought Doom Eternal looks best by far. i mean we never seen modern Doom Hell on earth. and what first glimpsy we have seen. i was blown away.
