Nothing even needs to be said about Doom and Doom 2. Id software cemented the FPS with those games and Quake.

If your interested in reading all about the awesomeness of John Carmack, John Romero, and old school Id, I highly recommend a book called Masters of Doom. I read it as part of a simulation and game design course I took several years ago and it was an informative and very enjoyable read.

On another note, Doom 3 was a better game then Half-Life 2. In every way. That’s coming from someone who loved Half-Life. HL2 was one of the most boring and repetitive, and ill paced games I have ever played. Hate on that if you want, I just honestly never liked the game personally.

Doom 2016 was loads of fun. Fun is something a lot of games, especially FPS’s seem to have forgotten about these days.

HL2 was indeed ass. HL1 was miles better.

@ghosts4ever: Doom 3 was kinda meh. Had some good stuff though. Doom 2016 was good, just became very mundane towards the end and the platforming sections were a drag.

I never understood Doom 3 hate. at all.

it was rival to Half life 2 back in 2004.

it was most unnecessarily hated game of all time while it was both critical and commercial success.

I agree on Doom 3. Its a great horror FPS for its time.

Half Life I dont agree with you

All of Max Payne games are masterpieces.

I can get behind this actually. But I don't think it's considered so by the gaming community at large.

Perhaps Portal? It's of course much easier with few entries. The number one masterpiece-producing franchise imo is Zelda. But it had a couple of lows.

While Doom 3 is nowhere near as bad as people love to make out, it's not really a Doom game. But still a solid action/horror shooter.

Doom 3 is better horror game than RE2.

I have to say ... i really enjoyed Doom 3 for what it is ... a good horror action game. It had great visuals, some good monsters and it had great atmosphere.

so yeah ... Doom 3 is pretty great and i do think, as a Horror Game, it may have the upper hand against RE2 in terms of atmosphere. I mean, i love RE2, but in it gets a little bit safe on some areas and the story is as cringe worthy as it can get in a classic RE game.

Resident Evil 4 is better than both though.

Doom is a great franchise, I loved doom 3, but I would not put it on the level of the other 3 main titles in the franchise.

The OP did ask a valid question, are there any franchises where all games could be considered masterpieces?

Mario was the first thing that popped into my head but sunshine can't really be called a masterpiece, even though it is a fun game.

Zelda maybe?? I personally didn't enjoy any of the 3d zelda games except for breath of the wild and wind waker but I think most people consider all of these games masterpieces.

In my mind every god of war game was a masterpiece but I don't think anyone else would agree.

Devil May Cry is close if not for how trashy part 2 was.

All 3 shining force games are masterpieces, I think most SRPG fans would agree with that, of course it has been about 20 years since our last shining force game so it may be too outdated for this thread.

Any other suggestions?

Doom 3 was anything but a masterpiece. Resurrection of Evil certainly made up for it's short-comings, but still lacked the hard-hitting action of the first two games. And you do know that Final Doom is an official game in the franchise, right? TNT: Evilution was pretty meh, and The Plutonia Experiment was pretty much the best official product id released up until that point. It took what id did and brought it to a whole other level.

Your assertions about the Doom franchise are bloated as usual, but I will agree with you that The Ultimate Doom, Doom II: Hell on Earth and Final Doom: The Pluntonia Experiment are masterpieces. I'm not sure I'm ready yet to consider Doom 2016 one.

Rayman, unless you want to include the Raving Rabbids spin-off, every game superb. Something of an artistic triumph.

I'd probably put it above 2D Sonic and Mario.

@pook99: Baldurs Gate 1+2 and the two expansions were all great imo and highly praised. Maybe uncharted would qualify aswell? Personally I think they are crap, but can’t deny the high scores they received..

I will say this was a very reasonable question and I don't recall seeing it asked on here before, so well done to the OP. I can't agree that Doom 3 was a masterpiece though, and I can't honestly think of a franchise that has had more than two games all being masterpieces right now.

People saying Zelda. LOL no. I refer you to the zelda cycle. Skyward Sword was no masterpiece. Every franchise I can think of has it's black sheep.

Hello friends. Sonic. There has never been a bad Sonic game because the Werehog was most underrated character IMO due to his manly physique. Most Masterpiece series of all time

Nope. Only the original Doom. And maybe Doom 2. Those were the only ones made when the original Doom team were still together, i.e. John Romero, John Carmack, Sandy Peterson and Tom Hall. Doom went downhill after the team broke up.

How about Mass Effect? No.1+2 are certainly masterpieces, no. 3 not so much unfortunately. And I am one of those guys who actually think that Andromeda was brilliant.

It's honestly one of the few franchises that are very popular where none are msaterpieces.... there really isn't one good complete Doom game it seems to me.
