Any dual shock play station controller I hate, I feel like I'm gonna get arthritis from extended plays because of the thumb sticks being so close together
My top three are:
1. GameCube
2. Xbox One
3. Dualshock 4
The Wii U pad and Pro controller are also very good.
Having owned a ps4 for a while now, I gotta say the dualshock 4 is pretty amazing. The form and weight are perfect and it just feels right in my hands. I even like the little touch pad thingy. X1 controller is pretty nice too, but just not as snug imo. My top three of all time would be:
1. Dualshock 4
2. N64 controller
3. Gamecube controller
I get the notion that many people didn't like those two Nintendo controllers, but I thought they were great. You, SW? Your top 3?
360 controller hands down
Yes already accepted that DS4 is best controller. Maybe xbox s or 360 controller is second, but both terrible face button and dpad, and AA battery.
Xbone controller trash.
You're laughing at yourself?
You're fucking weird
LOL, because youre not a fuckin fanboy, huh. Whoo, thats rich. LOL
I would say;
1. Xbox 360 (with transforming d-pad)
2. DS4
3. Xbox one
N64 controller? Are you shittin me? It's one of the most obtuse designs with the middle grip and center placement of the analog stick.
@Pikminmaniac: Analogs in the right place? You mean it's comfortable for you? There is no right or wrong place. It's subjective. Playing fighting games on Xbox pads are a joke.
Yeah it's my opinion. That's a given. Do I honestly have to say IMO after everything I say?
Most games' default controls use the left analogue and the face buttons more than anything so it makes sense to have them at the same height on either side. If both analogue sticks are at the same height on both sides, my thumb positions would have to mostly be lopsided.
P.S. playing fighting games on any gamepad is a joke
Just because you see so many use arcade sticks at EVO doesn't mean the average player is doing it. Call it a joke if you want, but the majority still uses pad.I'm guessing you don't think too highly of the Wii U pro pad as well, seeing as that also has symmetrical sticks. Most games use both analogs together these days so your being on the same height point is invalid. If asymmetrical analogs are so good, why is it a bad thing to have the left analog asymmetrical from the face buttons? Seems like a catch 22 to me.

People nuthuging the 360 controller pretty hard up in here, understandable since 360 had no games but F that the bumper buttons and DPad were useless and the Pos used Aa batteries.
Best of all time PS4, Dreamcast GameCube
It's my my favorite controller, yeah. Wii U Pro controller is nice too. I use a Saturn controller for fighting games when possible though. I know a stick is better, but I'm just too lazy.

And why did cows last gen "nuthug" the DS3, when (aside from it's great d-pad) it had terrible trigger design, convex analog sticks with confined positioning, and flawed ergonomic form factor?
It's the best playstation controller that's for sure.
To elaborate, it's the first real evolution in Playstation's controller design in four generations, where DS 1-3 were just small tweaks (ore refinements you could say) in essentially the same form factor.
Yes. Also, minus the Z button, the N64 controller was a piece of garbage that should not have got past QA.
If the N64 controller never got past QA, then we most likely wouldn't be using analog stick controllers today. Sure it's dated now, but was great for its time.

I'm glad you are giving the N64 controller a nod. Never EVER understood why people disliked it. Solid construction, six face buttons, ergonomic, good buttons, good dpad, and an analog stick that rivaled even most of the following generation of consoles(if well kept).

Why laugh? It is the truth. The controller uses high quality plastic, the buttons have some bounce to them, the controller is ergonomic in the dpad and analog positions, and contrary to popular belief the analog stick is actually rather good. It has just the right amount of spring to it, and pleasant give/take. The downside is that it must be taken decent care of, or just doesn't withstand abuse. The dualshock analogs were a joke in comparison and sony kept them until the ps3.

yeah and even the rumple pack stood the test of time. It felt more powerful than the competition, most likely due to it using separate batteries.
One controller I used to think was really great was the Xbox Controller S. However, if you look at things objectively those two small black and white buttons are just poorly and poorly placed. They remind me of RESET buttons on Watches/electronics/etc.
I really liked the Japanese Saturn controller. The SNES as well. Most people will argue that six face is the way to go for fighters, but personally I think the way the hand rests on the buttons makes more sense to use four face plus two shoulder.
Virtual Boy also had a good controller.

LOL why do you lie? The N64 is known to be one of the worst controllers ever made.
It's almost always in a top 5 list of worst controllers ever. That you even dare to put "ergonomic" as an argument for that POS controller is laughable.
The thumbstick was horrible and the build quality was very poor.
Atleast Nintendo resolved their mistake and dumped that POS controller.

You may have a point on the material and button quality, but in no way by any criteria can the N64 controller qualify in ergonomic design.
@Suppaman100: you mean it's top 5 worst on who's list? Random people on the internet who call themselves video game journalists? I'll take my opinion since I experienced it, thanks.

Everyone has the right to an opinion, even a crazy one.
@AdobeArtist:
An I disagree. It conforms to the hand in both positions. I've actually got a brand new one in the box.
Polarised opinions on this one. No surprises given the subjective nature of the topic TC. This is like a debate of what had the better gear system, the BMW, Mercedes or Ford

What kind of hands have you got? :[
Yes, definitely the best controller I've ever used. This is my top 3
1. DS4
2. X360
3. DS3
I havent tried the X1 controller yet, so I cant comment

skilled gaming hands, why you all got crippled hands?
I think most people are biased against the thing because they either used an over-used controller, had their own one break, or somehow STILL THINK that the dpad was meant to be used with the analog AND the far right stick. The idea was to have a controller that would be ergonomic for dpad and analog based games. If the analog didn't catch on, then there was the dpad to fall back on. The concept of the analog stick was originally rejected in the form of "wtf is THAT?" before people actually played Mario 64--then the revelation occurred. I've used a 360 pad for Mario 64 and the like; the N64 controller works much better in every way.
