Poll Is Elden Ring overrated in your opinion? (93 votes)

A little. 10%
Somewhat. 13%
Yes, totally! 33%
Nah. 44%

I'm about 85 hours into the game, and the one thing that seems to be missing from this game is a sense of adventure. I think that's where games like Breath of the Wild, Horizon, or even Skyrim do better. Up until now I I'm still just fighting my ways through enemies and bosses, and nothing else. The amount of content is great, but it could use a lot more variety. So for that reason, I think it's A little overrated.

How about you, SW? Is Elden Ring overrated in your opinion?

Absolutely not. Elden Ring is a masterpiece and in my opinion top 5 greatest game of all time. Critics agree.

The only thing wrong is how underrated the other Fromsoft games are.

Dark Souls 3 only 89 on MC? The game is a 93+ IMO.

every other fromsoft game could easily bump their score up by 2 points. Bloodborne could easily be 95-96MC.

Metacritic, user reviews, the only thing that actually matters:

ps5 - 7.9

xbox - 7.5

pc 6.9

avg - 7.4

Overrated confirmed.

Yeah, a little. It deserves praise, and I like seeing it getting praise. But to me, it's not a 10/10. I think Breath of the Wild is a better game, just to mention another big open world action adventure game (for SW purposes).

I'd give ER a 9/10, and BotW a 9.5/10. Or something.

Some days, ER feels like an 8/10 because I'm frustrated or bored with it, and BotW a 10/10, when you think about how much better it is than your usual open world game.

Yes! Just like BOTW and any game in which gamers and the media give the game more praise than the game deserves. It is also common for gamers to assume a game being overrated equals bad and that is mainly because they have a strong emotional connection to the game so they cannot handle any criticism levied to the game that defines their identity.😊

Haven't played it, but I wager it is overrated.

First off, it's a soulslike or whatever we call them now.

Second, it's open-world.

And finally, it scored a 10.

Boom bam. Overrated.

The term overrated is almost completely devoid of sense when it comes to tastes. Critics think it's good, fans love it. Who am I to call it overrated? If it's a popular opinion that it's the greatest game ever, I can't call it overrated.

Now if we were talking about sports where there are metrics to measure greatness by, we could start a discussion. For something as subjective as games? It's a fool's errand.

That said, I do find that some major issues the game has have been completely overlooked because of the sheer hype. The bad performance should have gotten more bad press, there are a myriad of bugs and glitches, physics engine issues and other problems that are objective but critics just glossed over just to tell us how amazing this game is. Hell, there are even people on the Steam forums who begged others NOT to write negative reviews even if they had technical issues because the game was "such a masterpiece" it deserved the Overwhelmingly Positive rating.

Ridiculous.

No. The quest system can use some tweaking (they should just put an obscure marker like they already did for the Volcano Manor assassin quests, but for every quest).

Other than that I still love it. At most I'd knock it down to a 9.5 for that, and not even sure about that.

Not only is the game itself overrated, but the zombies defending it are as well.

Remember when reviews were more objective and rated different categories such as graphics? Ah, I miss the days when reviewers had to somewhat justify the scores they gave.

That is just how the overrated works. A person can come to the conclusion that a person or thing is receiving more praise than it deserves.

Nah.

While there can be some annoying aspects ie. the lock on mechanics and the camera at times. The rest of the game is just so absolutely fantastic that it makes the overall experience just so good. The world is beautifully crafted with interesting aspects always grabbing the player’s attention compelling them to explore. There’s a bevy of cool bosses to fight, and the lore in the game is quite intriguing. It’s also an artistically beautiful looking game. My hats off to the development team who clearly put a ton of work into this massive game. Their efforts truly payed off.

If they don't like something then they can call it overrated because to them the subject is not worth the praise it receives.

Not really. Maybe overhyped (a hyping I did not participate in to avoid any and all details about the game before launch).

Plenty of valid points people have been complaining about, but I still like it more than 99% of games that have come out in the past 10 years.

Not often we get a game like this, one that isn't meant to be played by staring at UI elements.

granted i've only played 30 hours of it but I think it is a bit, mostly due to the performance issues which should have been enough to knock the scores down a bit (and are the reason I haven't played more)

also never been a fan of the super cryptic quest system in From games, I don't really care if its just for some random item that gives you a small benefit but when quests block access to important features like upgrading spirit summons, its pretty dumb.

luckily just wandering around exploring and killing stuff without much context is pretty fun so i'm still enjoying it. However, the parts i'm enjoying most are the more traditional "dark souls" type areas like the dungeons and castles. not sure how much the horse/bigger open areas add to the experience.

probably give it an 8/10 if I were to rate it currently. probably below DS1/3 and level with Bloodborne on my From Software games rankings at this point

I've by no means sunk any real hours into the souls series. I just find the gameplay to be very clunky.

It reminds me of why I just can't stand GTA games, the way the characters themselves control. And here, I feel it's the same way. I can't get passed it.

I would say just a little but still a good game and people really love the Souls-like formula and it's more of that celebrated kind of game from the people that made it a big deal.

@SolidGame_basic: I payed BB already, but I did not enjoy it as much as I wanted to due to it being on the shit PS4. The shit frame rate, frame pacing issues, inability to turn off chromatic aberration, etc. really hurt that game. I still need to play Demon's Souls, but I am hoping that is coming to PC. I don't really want to play it on PS5.

Yup. Overrated in my opinion. To be honest I feel it’s to difficult. Getting stressed out playing a game I’m supposed to be having enjoyment/relaxing time isn’t a game I’d want to play. I’m not a pro gamer.

Yes, but not just Elder Ring, but Fromsoftware in general. Souls games and Souls-like games are overrated. The gameplay formula in it's self overrated.

Feels like every game that cops this gameplay loop get praised for it too. Like Tunic.

What else is there? How often are people willing to discuss games in a meaningful manner? You saw the reaction to your thread discussing the questing. When it comes to souls games, criticism is followed with strong animosity, so I can understand why folks are not willing to go into the deeper reasons for the game being overrated for them.

The PC port is pretty awful, decent by Japanese developer standards, but missing so many features and doing stuff like a '60 fps' lock for console parity. If I want console parity I'll bash my head against the wall until my PC games start to look blurry, until then, give me my friggin' options.

As for the game itself, eh, if people enjoy themselves who am I to stop them.

10/10 can only be overrated. With recent games such as Forza Horizon 5 and Deathloop receiving major 10/10 reviews, I don't think there was anywhere for Elden Ring to go besides 10/10. Those games are overrated IMO and Elden Ring has a real 10/10 potential that may vary on user experience whether it fully achieved it or not.

Perhaps a bit overrated? But definitely, one of the best games I've played/enjoy so far for this year but not without its faults. The combat is so incredibly delectable that I salivate over it.

@BassMan said:

It's a downgrade from Sekiro and Bloodborne combat mechanics-wise. It's basically an open-world DS3. The Souls game design doesn't work with all this filler in between actual content IMO. Just go play Elden Ring first before diving into Sekiro and I still kinda prefer Sekiro over Elden Ring...as of now. Skip DS3.

I wouldn't say it's overrated at all. Video game review scores in general are inflated to the point that it makes sense for most publications to give Elden Ring a 10/10, and it would honestly be more than a bit ridiculous for a major reviewer to go below a 9. This game is an all timer. Sure, there are a ton of things wrong with the game, but the things it gets right are a whole lot more important to my overall experience playing the game than the things it gets wrong are.

Nope. Game deserves a 10/10. It does have some places that need polish but there are few games that give us the quality and quantity that Elden Ring delivers.

for me it's a whole is greater than the sum of its parts kind of game. when it's good it's phenomenal. it can also be absolutely infuriating.

i'm still annoyed that i had to respec three quarters of the way through. i hit a brick wall called the godskin duo with a strength build, and no matter what gear and tactics i used i just could not beat them. respecced to a dex build and ripped them to shreds first time. that really pissed me off.

i think it's clear most people have found issues with it, some common ones like camera and lock on, some dependent on their choice of play style, but forgiven them for all the good stuff. bloodborne and demon's souls remake still my favourites but i'm going to get a lot of mileage out of elden ring over the next few years. i've already started a second playthrough. i think it'll get even better over time. but i think after this if there's an elden ring 2 or another huge open world fromsoft game down the line i won't play it blind
