I recently purchased a DSi because I was asked to be a touring guitar player for a nationwide radio tour and I take 15 flights a week and the first game I bought was FF4 because of the fond memories I have of it from my youth. It is still engaging, gripping and groundbreaking in its story and gameplay, mostly its balancing and thought that goes in to each battle. I love chrono trigger and the other FF's in that vein, but I've played a lot of JRPG's over the years and I'm gonna maintain that FF4 is still the pinnacle of the genre. Every JRPG since pulls from this game...

FF6 is better, so is Chrono Trigger. FF4 pulled from Phantasy Star ultimately.

Its on my Top 5 list but Xenogears is the best JRPG of all time by a landslide! That game really changed my mind about what a game could be.

No, not even close. I don't understand the love for FF4, it was alright, I didn't find it anything special at all.

FF6 is better, so is Chrono Trigger.

This is what I was going to say.

I agree that FF6 and Chrono Trigger are the better JRPGs.

but FF4 and the FF4 the After Years with all the DLC make FF4 one giant epic.

This is my thoughts exactly. Its a great game don't get me wrong, but there is still plenty wrong with it to keep it from being the best FF let alone the best JRPG ever.

I think you have FF4 and FF6 mixed up. FF6 is the best FF. Its actually the perfect FF game. You should avoid the DS versions of those games, play the originals, or atleast get a port thats the same as the originals.

I liked 6 alot, but 4 is the more rewarding game for me. maybe I have a nestalgia thing with it. it brings me back to being 13 again, don't know, but I like this DS version of 4. I will agree that the best way to play them is the original versions however.

FFVI has got a far better story and characters, plus more rewarding exploration. FFVI is the only FF game other than the original to be in IGN's Video Game Hall of Fame...and it is in the top 10 Games of All Time in 2007.

The game was great for its time. But the only thing about the game that has stood the test of time is the soundtrack. The gameplay isn't particularly special, and the plot isn't either. It's an enjoyable game. One thing it has that the playstation favorites (as well as VI) don't have is challenging battles.

I would avoid the DS ver. It seems to resort to cheap tactics more often and the overglorified story scenes just make it more obvious how ridiculous the story is.

I played the DS remake and did not find the gamegood, let alone the best in the genre. I stoped playing the game once I got to the underworld.

Tellah and the Twins?

No, I liked Final Fantasy 6 better, I bought it day one as "Final Fantasy FIII" for SNES. I remember reserving it oh so many years ago for my SNES.

EDIT : I just read the OP, and responded, then I went through the thread to see how others felt, apparently I'm not alone in my like of FF6 over FF4. Chrono Trigger for SNES ftw as well.

Final Fantasy 6, 9, and 10 are better then 4 in my opinion.

EDIT: Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross are better as well.

It's my personal favourite RPG of all time. I find it to be a bit obsolete now, in terms of storytelling, but that doesn;t detract from the great experience that it is.

Well, that's because beside the first 2 disks of FF9, there hasn't been a JRPG I've enjoyed since the SNES...

Unless you count Bowser's Inside Story?

Wait, that's a lie. I enjoyed FFX even though it's main story was total trash.

It's a good game but there are other JRPGs I thought were better then FFIV such as FFVI, FFVII, FFIX, Persona 3, Persona 4, Chrono Cross and others.

I have the GBA version. I never played the DS version.

.... dude ... My hate. For those two games, knows no limits. But even besides that I wasnt saying that they arent better than final fantasy 4 (I cant speak for the other games because ive never actually played them, and imo, XII and XIII arent even in the same league) I dont think that anyone said that the best jrpg ever came out in like the last 10 years. I think someone said FFX but that was 2001 so close enough

Yeah I really loved BIS, Handheld JRPGS this gen have been great... But console jrpgs... ugh. The only one that I can think of that I really loved, was Valkyria Chronicles, but Im not even sure if that really counts as an RPG

Final Fantasy IV on the DS is freaking awesome, with its great soundtrack, story, presentation and the compelling and addictive gameplay. It's story IS starting to show its age, but it doesn't really matter in the larger scheme of things. Final Fantasy IV, for me, is the best RPG ever- but it is only my opinion.

I enjoyed Eternal Sonata and loved Crisis Core however I wouldn't say either are the BEST. The problem is that the JRPG format has been around so long it is hard for a current one to surpass it's predecessors in terms of qualifying. Most of the people who play JRPGs today are going to compare them to the ones they played years ago and it would be very difficult for a game to voercome the memories we have of first playing these games. Many of the big "breakthrus" in the genre are either WRPGs or FF13 type games. One doesn't qualify to compete with JRPGs and the other is not widely held as an example of where JRPGs should go... or even if it is a JRPG anymore.

I agree with TC. I loved FF2 on the snes. Cecil is probably my favorite FF protagonist, and the music is amazing. I think they kinda pooped out on the end though, and the final boss was easier than the random monsters you fight before it.

I remember when you got near the end in IV, that it got insanely hard with the monsters attacking like every second (on the snes version anyway). I've also played the remake version and i still found it to be an extraordianry experiance.

I reckon that FF IV along with VI still remain as some of the finest work to be created by Squaresoft ever.

I'm still hoping for a VI remake as well. Last i heard, they were having trouble remaking it for the DS and they might release it for the 3DS instead.
