Is FROM software the best developer on Earth?

I think it's a fair question, and yes I'm reacting to another major game of the year award for their team last night at TGA.

They make legendary games at this point, nothing else. Souls is the envy of the industry, because its pure gameplay brilliance and their follow up franchises, Bloodborne and now Sekeiro are both GOTY winners... I mean, at some point you have to say they're the best in the business...

Also, side note, I played Dark Souls for the first time all the way through this past summer... It was without question the best game experience I had all year

Having to repetitively run all the way back a boss through the same enemies over and over is great design.

Making the same game over and over for about a decade.

Probably the most overrated developer after Valve and with Demon Souls on a par with Halflife 2 and Resident Evil 4 as most overrated entry of all time.

Currently playing Sekiro again. It's beyond awesome. They're definitely one of my favorite current developers. Best ever? No, good luck beating Nintendo..

From Software is good even though I haven't really played any of their games but I can respect what they've done.

Not my numero uno... but definitely my top 4. Yeah From rocks for sure.

No but I do very much enjoy their Souls games and am really looking forward to Elden Ring. For me the top developer is a toss up between Capcom and Nintendo.

Very close to it, yes. Those that disagree undoubtedly got their ass whooped in the Soulsborne universe one too many times, and are extraordinarily bitter because of it.

As someone who picked up Demon's Souls at random from GameStop on launch day at the recommendation of the staff and then rode that slow burn into oblivion,

I think I gotta say yes just by the sheer number of hours I have in the Souls (bonre/sekiro) franchise.

From Software has managed to tap into a [large] niche market and demographic, that is to say they have appealed to the perfectionists out there, the people that are willing to do something over and over and over...and over...again and again, until it is done correctly.

They have also been a success, which in turn has spawned a new sub-genre of game ("soulsborne") with a lot of copies.

However, I think it is important to note that most of the Soulsborne games out there are also really good. Maybe even better than Dark Souls. So I question whether From Software is really that great, and instead maybe they were just more innovators than anything.

But no I don't think that makes them the best developer on Earth. At least no more than it makes PUBG Corp the best developer on earth for creating a new sub-genre and spawning a bunch of copy cats...

I need them to quit bullshitting and publish a new Tenchu game that's done right. :)

But yeah, they are definitely great devs, and have consistently delivered great games lastgen-throughout this gen. However, I would like for them to branch outside the "souls" formula more...

Wow they actually own the right to the Tenchu IP. I had no idea. Seems like a no-brainer.

@subspecies: I'm really not sure - I just strongly dislike From Software's design choices. There are many many games I prefer across many many genres - but not from a single dev.

@uninspiredcup: I mean, can we really minimize all the things souls does to a single element of the game? My counterpoint would be the joy in discovering a new way the connected worlds all link. I can't say I ever took issue with the way the world was laid out or the way they asked me to move around in it. I thought it was a strength of the game.

By comparison though, in terms of quality rpg design, I just completed the switcher 3 where for over 60 hours I got 45 Seconds of gameplay for every 5 minutes of cutscenes, horseback riding and inventory management. I was bored to tears wishing I was playing an rpg that challenged my time investment.

I'm sure to some people they are... but not to me.

Lol considering that all they do is variants of the same old tired game, then hell no... good for people with no life who get their jollies repeating the same level over and over and over again until they have found the perfect cheese strategy I guess!

For the rest of us with a job, a wife and a life, no one got time for that shit...

Witcher 3 sucks. I like the Witcher 2 more but that's not great gameplay wise either, 1 is basically unplayable, speaking of overrated, CDP are first to come to mind. Cyberpunk will have good writing but will mechanically be a broken mess i'm guessing.

Check out YS if you like Darksouls, it might not look it, but they share alot in DNA, Oath and Origin being the best, and sold readily cheap and able to run on a toaster.

Well, "best developer on Earth" is a highly subjective affair, but in my subjective opinion From Software is one of the best, and one of my personal favorite devs.

The original Dark Souls is an absolute masterpiece. If I had to recommend a first From Software title to an outsider who's never played their games, I will always tell the person to play the original Dark Souls to understand what makes From Software so revered.

Because they make meh games. Maybe its just the games I've played but they have all been average at best, form Bully to Manhunt to Midnight Club to GTA 3, Vice City to the worst AAA game I played last gen in GTA4.

The last R* game I bought was GTA4 and I swore I would never touch another game they made. So far they have made it easy.

They haven't shown that they can make any type of game, yet.

No, From Software is not the best developer on earth ... I love their Souls games, but they do have some pretty damn glaring flaws ... luckily the overall experience of the games overshadows their weakness pretty good, not to mention some of their gaming designs are questionable at best ... cheap and nonsensical at worst.

So, they are excellent developers and the sky is the limit for them ... but let's not jump the shark with them.

RE4 and HL2 are brilliant games, as are most from software games. I kinda thought they'd be overrated before playing Bloodborne, but after that game it made me a believer and fanboy of them.

I agree on a new spiritual successor to Tenchu. Was hoping Sekiro would be more along those lines, but I was wrong about that. Still a good game, but not exactly what I wanted.

At any rate, I wouldn't say best, though, since they really only do one type of game. Maybe when it comes to action RPG games, they are the best.

Naughty Dog is the best developer in my opinion.

I never understood the hate for GTA IV it may lack the variety of SA but the physics and shooting mechanics are a huge leap forward.

It deserved the hate it got because it was bad, the driving physics were atrocious, like shopping trolley with 3 wheels atrocious. I can't think of one good thing to say about it.

@uninspiredcup: I played a couple Ys games on my vita. I enjoyed them quite a bit! They're a blast to play. Another rpg where you are more connected to gameplay, rather than just sifting through inventories.

Witcher 3 was just ok for me. I hoped it would've left me with a better impression, but I couldn't take the boredom by the end.

You know those games that you're way in the middle of but you just want it to end? That was the Witcher 3.

@TheEroica: Ya, Witcher 2 doesn't have bloat, can finish it multiple times for different outcomes and areas but it's easily about 12 hours in a single run.

At this point everyone should know that every developer is the worst ever and every game overrated.
