Fromsoft is a good developer, but they are better than anything at Microsoft.

They are definitely up there with Nintendo and a few others for sure.

If you like playing the same enemies and levels over and over and over again I guess. I'm not wasting my precious time on a game I have to play for 20 hours just to get through a level and learn how a boss fights. Pretty lame concept imo.

Meh. If anything I'd say the simplistic combat is a big step back from what we had in games like DMC and Ninja Gaiden.

No, I wouldn't say so.

Their early games felt clunky (including Dark Souls - it's a slow, methodical, plodding combat system and had a bad frame rate), and all of their games have segments that felt rushed or slapped together (the final few areas of Dark Souls, the last third of Bloodborne, etc.).

There's also a big difference between 'letting players figure things out' and 'poorly explaining things'. Most players don't notice the difference, because they just find an online walkthrough that gives them all of the answers, but play their games without a walkthrough and you'll notice tons of little frustrations and missing information.

Anyway, I like their games, but people are very quick to forgive their design flaws.

No, not by a long shot. But they certainly made better games than vast majority of 'AAA' developers out there.

No way! Their games are pretty clunky. Their UIs are always horrible and archaic looking/feeling. Graphics are sub-par. And worst of all, there are always artificial difficulty curves due to cheap mechanics in fights.

Not explaining some mechanics isn't necessarily bad, but when the entire game relies on experimentation to figure out how to beat bosses and you end up having to do the fights like 3-6 times because you keep dying because of unexplained, cheap, or unfair mechanics... that's just bad design. It should be intuitive.

Best developer?...

Sorry but that would have to be a company who can do 4 things CONSISTENTLY

  • have great gameplay
  • great graphics
  • great story
  • not have performance issues

Aside from Sekiro everything else they have made is overrated trash, also From software can't code for sh**, graphics are last generation with a resolution bump, games are repetitive and frustrating and story is what now?... The best are as follows.

  • Nintendo
  • Rockstar
  • Naughty Dog

If they ever get around to putting out a new version of Armored Core, then yes.

It was blizzard but they sold their souls to corporate greed long ago. Sad

Not the best. But one of the best. I'd say the best is Capcom or Nintendo.

Two types of people, it would seem. Every thread about FromSoftware's games show this.

Some enjoy their games because of their atmosphere, challenging and precise gameplay, mysterious lore, level design, etc. And can forgive them for the few shortcomings they have.

Some dislike their games because it's too hard for them to enjoy. I promise these people would like the games more if there was an easy setting and tutorials. Some will go great lengths trying to explain that the games are "badly designed", but it all really comes down to the difficulty being too harsh for them. Anyone who knows anything about creating games can see FromSoftware's Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro are not badly designed games.

You will see complaints like the classic "you have to run all the way back to the boss killing the same enemies over and over" among other silly things. Yeah, if you die a lot. Then the game is too hard for you to enjoy. Pretty simple. All valid complaints you see about the games have to do with the difficulty.

Making the same game over and over for about a decade.

Probably the most overrated developer after Valve and with Demon Souls on a par with Halflife 2 and Resident Evil 4 as most overrated entry of all time.

If you git gud you don't have to run through them multiple times.

@jg4xchamp: who's the best developer on Earth champ?

hmmmmmm My all time answer is Capcom, and my current answer is Capcom. Tho that's technically cheating because Capcom like Nintendo is basically multiple studios into one.

I'm not beholden to: they only do one type of game - being mediocre at a lot of games is not better than being excellent at one. Blizzard makes great RTS games in Starcraft and Warcraft, but loot rpgs are universally garbage, ditto MMOs, and Hearthstone is fine for like Magic for babies. Now if you had a dev that can excel at multiple titles. That's something.

Naughty Dog's games lack depth, Rockstar's games lack good gameplay.

From Software, specifically when led by Miyazaki has been ace since Demon's Souls. Dark Souls makes meaningful improvements/changes on that game, ditto Bloodborne, and ditto Sekiro. Sekiro being dismissed as any other Souls game is bizarre.............................HOWEVER, while the games aren't by any means shallow, they don't exactly satisfy any sort of technical play.

For all their brilliance at level design, their combat is nothing to write home about when compared to actual action games by Platinum n Capcom n Team Ninja (who with Nioh has the best combat system in from software's bread n butter style no less).

Story telling is whatever, the least important thing about a video game.

The other reason used against From Software is wack. A whole bunch of excuses being made instead of just adapting to the situation.

Singular studio/team, were they not about to ruin Guilty Gear, I'd argue for Arcsys System Works, but given how good Soul Cal 6 is and godlike Tekken 7 is, I'll go with Namco's fighting game division. From Software is probably the pick if you made me cut out the fighting game devs, because you people have bad taste and don't play the glory that is fighting games. Tho I think Kamiya led platinum games>miyazaki's from software games, free.

If someone like Nintendo counts tho, then it's Capcom. They have Nintendo's back catalog matched for my money, and the difference is that Capcom's best games tend to offer more challenging/deeper systems.

Not even close. They’re too niche and don’t make games for everybody. Not to mention their online and multiplayer option are poor, at best. There’s a large segment of gamers left out right there.

Probably. There 100% has to be some sort of subliminal messaging shit going on with that game. Even my wife is hooked.

I need some of those sunglasses from They Live so I can see what's really going on here

@Sevenizz: they don't make games for everyone? What does that mean?

Also, their online component as designed with the single player game is not intended to match make like a cod game or a big MP game. It's purposefully vague in much the same ways it is for a game like journey... That doesn't have to be your cup of tea, but it certainly isn't a botched way to do it.

I like FROM Software they have some great games and i'm a big fan of the souls/tenchu series and they are hugely influential. But they seem to be relying on the same type of game at the moment (Soulslike) and resting on their laurels. They need to mix it up. They haven't reached the dizzy heights of developers past like Looking glass, Black Isle, SEGA, Nintendo, classic square, classic Bioware and classic RARE.

I genuinely believe CAPCOM are back on form as the best devs today. And they are also one of the greatest devs of all time.

I don't know about the best ever, but they are really consistent with their quality.

Every game they have made you can argue is a good game, and they went more game play focused rather than story and I think a lot of gamers respect that.
