I had a go of the first Halo a few years back to see what all the fuss was about, I seriously don't get the hype.

All I saw was a slow moving run and gun, it didn't vastly surpass the vast quantity of other shooters out there. I suspect it is the big fish in the little pond mentality, Halo was one of the first noteworthy shooters on Xbox, plus they pour millions into their hype machine.

I've played alot of FPS over my 25+ years of gaming... and HALO is easily one of the best designed FPS's I've played. It's all opinion... and PC Elitests will never admit that a primarily console FPS could possible be better than any FPS on their beloved PC.... so there isn't much point in debating it.

Halo gets a bad rep because the fanbase in MP is largely made up of idiots/e-thugs and little boys that sound like girls, yet have the need to talk about doing things to your mother.... things that they probably don't even understand, but heard from their older brother.

Halo is great.... fanboys = fail

Well I've always felt HALO was a pretty good FPS. Its just that I, and I'm sure many others, will vehemently disagree that its THE "WOW WOW WOW THE BEST FPS EVAR!!!!!1111". Its most definitely not. The most elitist will say it sucks but the majority of mainstream PC gamers will say its an average, pretty generic, run-off-the-mill shooter that fortunately has good production values. I enjoyed it while it lasted but it didnt leave me with any lasting impression really. The maps are pretty boring imo and the gun fights...are just a little too deliberately slow for my taste. It gets tedious for me after a while.

I think it does compare to the PC shooters of the time, but no way in hell was it AAA at that point anymore.

Halo in 2003 for PC vs. other FPS's at the time? No, not even close. Also, Half-Life 2 released a year later and obliterated Halo in every sense with its gameplay.

AvIdGaMeR444
Not at all. I've played all the Halo games and all the Half Life games and I have to say, neither are as far apart as fanboys would like to believe. I gotta say Halo is a lot more fun though since the only longevity I get out of Half Life is whatever the modding community can cook up (Ahem CSS)

Is this because of the debate over at the PC board?:P

Considering it still has a fairly large MP community, yes.

A lot of people aren't too fond of Halo in the PC boards but the same can be said to the Sony and Nintendo boards.

The problem with Halo on the PC was that it was consolized. The controls didn't feel like native Mouse and Keyboard controls, they felt like they were made for a controller and adapted to use the mouse and KB controls. Gameplay wise it was about the same, at the time tho, most PC FPS games moved faster, you seem to 'float' in halo games when you jump for example.

What the heck is wrong with you? They lock the game in 30fps just like the console version

[QUOTE="Zoso-8"]Yes, because COD4 is so incrediblyfast paced that anyone can get good at it.Zoso-8

Fixed it!

How does faster translate to ease of use in an FPS, just curious? Slower means you have more time to react, making it easier for someone with slow reflexes/reaction time.

Fast pace means more twitch-based gameplay, the kind that revolves around spamming bullets/grenades, jumping around, and luck. You know...pretty much like CoD4.

What does the framerate have to do with anything? He's right, the movement did feel a bit off when compared to other PC shooters, it didn't bother me much though. The main thing that bugged me with Halo1 was the level design.

Halo is a game that is dynamic -- it can be slow, it can be fast, and it can be so fast that you never get the chance to look around. See you tonight on Team SWAT.

60fps eqaul faster movement

:? No I don't think it does, just smoother, generally speaking anyway. Otherwise someone playing an online racing game in 60fps would have his car go faster than the person playing in 30fps. I'm no tech expert though so maybe I'm wrong, and I do know that the 30fps cap does contribute to the "odd feel", but I think there's more to it than that. Doesn't really matter though, whatever the reason it feels off.

Well, Halo was great due to it being open sanbox style, while other great PC games (half-life for example) where extremely linear. Plus, Halo multiplayer is amoung the best in any FPS ever. I think it lives up to that standard, although PC fanboys will say "bu...bu....teh graphixz...." And smarter PC players will compare fps rates, but ignore fun value.

All online games lag. Get the right server with the right people and it's not as noticeable.

So higher framerate means you move faster in the game? Yeah I recall having some old games running too fast on a new pc. Okay whatever, lets say it works like that, doesn't really matter. I've played lot of games in 30fps without floaty jumping, slow running or vehicles on ice kind of movement, also I'm pretty sure Halo on PC had an option to turn the 30fps cap off. So I still don't think it's that.

Halo 1 is one of the most lagest games then.
