San Andreas edges out Grand Theft Auto III. But GTAIII was most impressive compared to its predecessors.

Vice city was the best. Since GTA4 is just vice city with better graphics and some extra features, it is MUCH better than san andreas.
well It's my favorite in terms of fun, regarding gta games I don't give a **** about the story so.....
Gta SAN ANDREAS is the best gta game ever and its more than gta vice city and gta 4 because * better game play * better characterisation * huge areas * awesome single/multi player modes *best ps 2 and best gta game ever although vice city story line is good but its graphics is out dated and about gta 4 rockstar did a great job in making the gameplay real but they also screwed the storyline so gta sa > gta vc > gta IVAmazingdave07
This is a two year old thread.
IMO, Vice City >>>> San Andreas
Vice City, the environment, just had much more personality to me. It was colorful and the characters were excellent. San Andreas had me cringing at the visuals and hating the characters, despite how well done the voice acting was.
GTA Vice City is the best.
But fun wise, nothing compares to the original Grand Theft Auto from 1998. Top-down view, inovative.. spent countless hours on that game.
SA there was so much to do i liked the story and characters.gta iv was just a huge letdown it's fun dont get me wrong but it truly just took content away and thats not cool in my book
It depends on how you prioritize features in games.
If you don't care for polish, good shooting mechanics or depth and just want to blast at government agents in a jetpack, then San Andreas is for you!
If you don't care for huge worlds or the ability to swim and like a feeling of nostalgia for the 80's and a sense of power and control, then Vice City is for you!
If you like immersion, story, realistic environments and polished working gameplay focus over insanity and varied environments and mission types then GTA IV is for you! (though Ballad of Gay tony sort of brings some the best out of San Andreas and Vice City)
Overall I preferred GTA IV. I appreciated the story and love messing around more then any other GTA game just because of the insane realism the citizens displayed. If you shot a guy in the leg, he'd grab the wound and limp away. If you plowed a car through a Burger Shot window, the customers would flip out and run away, and if you started a fight with a gang member there was a good chance it could escalate into a full on gang on cop war with you just watching.
A lot of people who hated GTA IV just didn't take the time to mess around like that I think, and personally while I like Saints Row for being more focused on crazy fun, GTA IV is unmatched in immersion and story for open world games outside of Red Dead Redemption.
It's a toss up between Vice City and San Andreas. The story in SA sucks after a wile of playing because it gets completely ridiculous. It starts out great, and if it would have continued to stay that way, it would have ben, without a doubt, the best GTA title. Vice City's story is perfect, i love Scarface, so i love this one. The city is small and isn't pack with extra stuff to do compared to San Andreas though, and the controls are more on the clunky side compared to SA also.So yeah, it's a toss up between these two.
Maximum level GTA SA did so many things, that when you hop into GTA 4 it feels more like Vice City, the controls are better on GTA 4,but on GTA SA the level of freedom and the to do list is way bigger than in GTA 4,once you fly your own plane and sky dive with a parachute out of it,going back is not an option. I played GTA SA for countless hours, even after finishing the game i was back for more, after finishing GTA 4 i drop it and move on.Many people say that GTA San Andreas is better than GTA 4.Is it true.
I don't know because my PC doesn't support it.

I think which order you play them effects alot (unless rating them based on story). San andreas I like taking over all the gang territories and I like how you can recruit up to I think 7 people. Plus I thought the leveling stats were fun so I have to say I like san andreas the best overall for me. The main missions in gta3 and characters were my favorite like the mafia guys and your friend 8-ball. vice city wins with music for me though. only thing that I liked about gtaiv was the online. main story I had to force myself to complete.
Despite the time I put into SA because it's stupidly long, I'd have to say no. I prefer 4. Unlike many people, the sole reason I played GTA games (All of them, one of my favorite franchises all the way back to the PC original) is the missions. Just BSing around has never ever been any fun for me.
I agree that SA had a lot more to do, but aside from sky diving I couldn't care less. Stupid delivery truck? Train driving? The "schools"? Diving for pearls etc? Braindead Ai turf wars? No thanks.
The gameplay refinements in SA such as the real free aiming system are what made it better to play then VC or III. But the story is a jumbled mess of nonsense, and the RPG lite stuff like eating and weight gain is more annoying then fun or useful.
4 took the gameplay refinements even further, and made the story a lot more realistic. Like a decent modern crime movie. SA is like a caricature.
Everyone says they are mad there is nothing to do after you beat 4. Well the game took me like 25 or more hours to beat. When I was done I played a different game just like when I beat any other game. There is way to many games and not enough time as it is. When I do decide to play 4, SA, VC or 3 again it will be for the missions, not finding hidden things or randomly driving something random off of something else.
