I felt it was a very good game, and not the "overrated trash" that I've seen many call it. It was a stellar end to the series, and I, for one, enjoy it.
I did a thread on this subject a few hours ago, BTW...
well cod4 was a good game in its own right, but the gameplay is very different. While critically and commercially it was a success (and thus, not a failure), many here feel it was simply one of the better games of 2007, nothing more.
A lot of people feel it was eclipsed by COD 4 and Crysis later in the year.

Same genre though.
Yep.
They hyped it up and failed to deliver on every point.
Single player was horrible. Story sucked, horrible ending, HORRIBLE FACES, poor graphics
Multiplayer was nothing special. Horrible ranking system. Atrocious betrayal system.Matt-4542
What do horrible faces, have to do with anything? And the story, IMO, was, though not stellar in its own right, very well-told and well-written. Also: I felt the ending provided a solid sense of closure while leaving things open for potential tie-ins. And why, exactly, do graphics matter?

It's hard to say Call of Duty 4 eclipsed Halo when Halo 3 was the most played game on Live last week. Really, sales is the only area that Call of Duty 4 has bested Halo and considering it's multiplatform it's not somthing to much to brag about. Especially considering Halo 3 sold more on the 360.

Being multiplatform was one of the reasons COD 4 was regarded by many to beat out Halo 3, it was more widely available.
Then again, something like Crysis which sold less than Halo 3 was also regarded similarly by many (even winning Shooter GOTY here on GS).
What I'm trying to say is, Halo 3 was not the undisputed master of the Shooter genre in 2007.
No
8 million in sales and will probably hit 10 million
Still the most competitive shooter on consoles
Is the only console shooter with an active community in terms of sharing user generated content
Tons of AAA postivie reviews
IT was awesome. It just got overhyped
It is easily the best online MP game on any console....and still easily the best game Microsoft has published this gen(yes meaning I think it is a superior game to Gears, Mass Effect, Forza 2, etc)
I'd rather play it than Call of Duty 4.
I hate Call of Duty 4. I also hate Halo. But Halo has fun and Call of Duty doesn't.
Halo3 is not a failure. I played it for hundreds of hours lol.
but I don't think it's the best game or FPS on the 360 either
Being a PS3/WII owner, my opinion might not stand for much, but my thoughts on Halo 3 is that it was "overrated", but still enjoyable. I have yet to finish the whole game (once again, don't own a 360), but what I have played sort of feels like Halo 2 with additional weapons/vehicles. This however, isn't so bad, because I liked Halo 2 very much, but it didn't seem to offer much for me as far as single player is concerned.
Multiplayer is sort of in the same boat, it just felt too much like Halo 2, with a couple of little changes. Granted, Halo 2 was the best online game for Xbox, so not too many changes needed to be made, but compared to some of the other shooters that have been coming out, I felt as if I was having a whole new experience with (lets just say) CoD4, as opposed to Halo 3, which I have gotten too used to over the last two titles.
Forge was an idea that I liked a lot, but didn't add as much "customization" as people tried to say it did, but however small the customization was, I now long for this feature in every FPS I see released (was hoping Killzone 2 would steal the idea, but too my current knowledge it wont be happening).
Overall, the single player was "meh" to me, but I still get thatnostalgicfeeling when I have friends over, and we system link their 360's to play some custom split-screen matches for an hour or two.
Crysis took Halo 3 and wiped the floor with it's face. Seriously, Halo 3 isn't even 1/8 the game that Crysis is. Commercially? Someone would have to be ignorant to not consider it a commercial success. As a game? Yes, it failed. I still do not understand why so many people play it. Puckhog04Why bring up Crysis??
and BTW I never played Crysis, but all my friends say that the game isnt even that great, but overhyped.
see what I did there?

Because they were two games in the same genre released very close to each other?
PC standards vs 360 standards...Crysis took Halo 3 and wiped the floor with it's face. Seriously, Halo 3 isn't even 1/8 the game that Crysis is. Commercially? Comparing a PC game to a console game?
That's like comparing a console game to a handheld game.
I'm still playing at after almost a year, so I don't see how I can consider it a failure. It has the most active community on consoles and was a major improvement over Halo 2.
No matter how much I get pissed at it, I keep coming back and each game plays out differently.
I don't think anyone who is bashing it so much actually ever gave it a chance.
No it's not. :|Comparing a PC game to a console game?

Crysis vs Halo is a very valid comparison.
i didnt see the hate for halo1 nor halo2(expect its ending), but for halo 3 its massive. its not even funny anymore, because halo 3 in my oppinion is the best game out for the xbox 360. even tough your oppinion may differ, there is no need for the hate the game gets, because it deserves much much better...papi_lekker
The game is awesome , One of the best Multiplayer experiences this year and I loved the singelplayer. Those who hate the game ar mostly people who dont own it... All my friends are happy with the game and it didnt dissapoint them neither did it dissapoint all the reviewers out there...

You're obviously young. There was a TON of HATE for the original Halo, and ESPECIALLY HALO 2. In retrospect, they are considered better games than HALO 3, sure, but they had HATE as well.
HALO 3 failed to evolve in the same large leaps and bounds many 360 users expected. Heck, with COD4, Battlefield, and other games stealing ONLINE HALO players, it is evident HALO 3's Online community isn't as strong as Halo 2's, but maybe that's just me.
