While critically and commercially it was a success (and thus, not a failure), many here feel it was simply one of the better games of 2007, nothing more.

A lot of people feel it was eclipsed by COD 4 and Crysis later in the year.

I felt it was a very good game, and not the "overrated trash" that I've seen many call it. It was a stellar end to the series, and I, for one, enjoy it.

I did a thread on this subject a few hours ago, BTW...

It wasn't a failure, my only problem was with Bungie. They got too lazy and stuck with the same engine which made it look and feel way too much like Halo 2. A new engine would have been a whole new experience and that's what I look for in a game even if it's a sequel.

I saw plenty of hate for Halo 1 and 2.

But no, Halo 3 is not a failure. Perople just bash it because it's a big game.

Yep.

They hyped it up and failed to deliver on every point.

Single player was horrible. Story sucked, horrible ending, HORRIBLE FACES, poor graphics
Multiplayer was nothing special. Horrible ranking system. Atrocious betrayal system.

I don't see how it could be seen as a failure even.

Unless not being universely liked by everyone is seen as failing, in which case all games fail.

What do horrible faces, have to do with anything? And the story, IMO, was, though not stellar in its own right, very well-told and well-written. Also: I felt the ending provided a solid sense of closure while leaving things open for potential tie-ins. And why, exactly, do graphics matter?

It's hard to say Call of Duty 4 eclipsed Halo when Halo 3 was the most played game on Live last week. Really, sales is the only area that Call of Duty 4 has bested Halo and considering it's multiplatform it's not somthing to much to brag about. Especially considering Halo 3 sold more on the 360.

Being multiplatform was one of the reasons COD 4 was regarded by many to beat out Halo 3, it was more widely available.

Then again, something like Crysis which sold less than Halo 3 was also regarded similarly by many (even winning Shooter GOTY here on GS).

What I'm trying to say is, Halo 3 was not the undisputed master of the Shooter genre in 2007.

Only played halo 1 and 2....and the only thing I liked about it was that it was one of the first few fps games on a consol that incorporated online gameplay very well....other than that, nothing else about them was worth owning....so I didn't bother to keep either one of them, and was never really interested in the third one either. >.>

No

8 million in sales and will probably hit 10 million

Still the most competitive shooter on consoles

Is the only console shooter with an active community in terms of sharing user generated content

Tons of AAA postivie reviews

IT was awesome. It just got overhyped

It is easily the best online MP game on any console....and still easily the best game Microsoft has published this gen(yes meaning I think it is a superior game to Gears, Mass Effect, Forza 2, etc)

Crysis took Halo 3 and wiped the floor with it's face. Seriously, Halo 3 isn't even 1/8 the game that Crysis is. Commercially? Someone would have to be ignorant to not consider it a commercial success. As a game? Yes, it failed. I still do not understand why so many people play it.

Being a PS3/WII owner, my opinion might not stand for much, but my thoughts on Halo 3 is that it was "overrated", but still enjoyable. I have yet to finish the whole game (once again, don't own a 360), but what I have played sort of feels like Halo 2 with additional weapons/vehicles. This however, isn't so bad, because I liked Halo 2 very much, but it didn't seem to offer much for me as far as single player is concerned.

Multiplayer is sort of in the same boat, it just felt too much like Halo 2, with a couple of little changes. Granted, Halo 2 was the best online game for Xbox, so not too many changes needed to be made, but compared to some of the other shooters that have been coming out, I felt as if I was having a whole new experience with (lets just say) CoD4, as opposed to Halo 3, which I have gotten too used to over the last two titles.

Forge was an idea that I liked a lot, but didn't add as much "customization" as people tried to say it did, but however small the customization was, I now long for this feature in every FPS I see released (was hoping Killzone 2 would steal the idea, but too my current knowledge it wont be happening).

Overall, the single player was "meh" to me, but I still get thatnostalgicfeeling when I have friends over, and we system link their 360's to play some custom split-screen matches for an hour or two.

It lived up to the hype to me.

CoD4 was probably better since it was easier to score kills. I don't think anyone thought Crysis was better other than in the graphics department.

I think Halo 3 could have used a bit more time to cook, but that doesn't mean it wasn't an awesome conclusion to the series. 9.5 was on the nose imo. Plus it's sold something like 8 million on a single console, hasn't it? How is that ever a failure.

there's still too much BS in multiplayer

I've hit too many people in the head with sniper rounds and too many warthogs with the Spartan Laser only to be stunned at how my opponent will walk or drive away

The extra features always reel me back though

I'm still playing at after almost a year, so I don't see how I can consider it a failure. It has the most active community on consoles and was a major improvement over Halo 2.

No matter how much I get pissed at it, I keep coming back and each game plays out differently.

I don't think anyone who is bashing it so much actually ever gave it a chance.

Crysis vs Halo is a very valid comparison.

How so? PC is capable of so much more..:?

Mods and visuals really and it has a superior interface.

No offense but saying Crysis is better than Halo doesn't automatically mean PC FPS>Console FPS

In terms of FPS games sure the interface is something to work with...but game design wise any PC FPS can be done on a console...certain games will just feel a bit more clunky on a gamepad(Unreal for instance, team fortress)

I mean it isn't like Bungie wasn't capable of making an open sandbox like environment FPS on a console....So Crysis versus Halo 3 is valid.

In core design of single player and multiplayer, yes it is valid.

Personally Crysis destroys Halo 3 from a single player standpoint.

Halo 3s story is better(but thats not saying anything)

Halo 3s mp is better as well.

The kicker for me is that Crysis had superior gameplay overall and the single player was vastly superior, the mp was the only letdown.

You're obviously young. There was a TON of HATE for the original Halo, and ESPECIALLY HALO 2. In retrospect, they are considered better games than HALO 3, sure, but they had HATE as well.

HALO 3 failed to evolve in the same large leaps and bounds many 360 users expected. Heck, with COD4, Battlefield, and other games stealing ONLINE HALO players, it is evident HALO 3's Online community isn't as strong as Halo 2's, but maybe that's just me.

I love the halo series and my xbox 360 but I thought Halo 3 sucked. Boring, mediocre and uninspired. MAJOR disapoinment. Just my opinion of course. I don't think it can hold a candle to Bioshock or Half-Life Orange box.
