Halo 3 and Unreal Tournament are not that disimilar at all. That goes for the multiplayer aspect. Human cannons? Unreal Tournamnet has those, guns that charge up, Unreal Tournament has those, flying vehicles, UT has those too. The only thing that Halo doesn't have is better game modes for multiplayer.

Ninja-Hippo

It's easy to just look for similar things; both have guns! :o Do they look or play anything like each other whatsoever? No.

They play very similar.

I really just played it for the SP so yeah it did, the story was, well apart from the whole Aliens Vs Humans and other little bits there was none. Still know nothing about master chief...

I was also expecting it too look great, which it did not.

Though if you are pleased its there, that is fine, as for steamrolling, you can indeed tweak the difficulty.

skrat_01

Turning mythic and blind skulls on is hardly "tweaking" anything. It turns an easy level into a borderline-impossible pit of hell.

From the time I've been here, I've seen many people bash the game instead of people hyping and praising it, but that's just what I saw. (Don't let the date I joined fool you. I just signed up and never came back a few months after.)

The game is really good and is the game I mostly play. I enjoy the way people are able to share screenshots of their best action in the game. The ranking system is ok and it still adds a more competitive feeling in between every person online. The story is very interesting and has a pretty good ending for the story IMO. I always wished the game had a more dark and gritty look instead of all those colors because Halo seems like it had a more darker(but not too dark) feeling than that was portrayed.

But overall, the game is definitely not a failure. If it is anything, it is a success. Those who hate it most likely suck at it, haven't played it, or just take jolly rides on the hate bandwagon because they can't think for themselves.

And how do they play in a similare way? One is a full-out-mach1-super-speed shooter where the other is more normal paced.

I disagree with that really. Bungie said how they make the cutscenes short and movie-like to minimise repetitivness and to stop people just skipping them; but i say let them skip if they cant be bothered to enjoy a good story. We shouldnt have to read the books to get all the deeper stuff.

I mean tweaking as in modifying the gameplay with those unlockable 'mutators', rather than selecting a difficulty level.

Its like selecting godlike for bots in UT04, then adding an instagib mutator - for instance, in a different comparison.

[QUOTE="papi_lekker"]i didnt see the hate for halo1 nor halo2(expect its ending), but for halo 3 its massive. its not even funny anymore, because halo 3 in my oppinion is the best game out for the xbox 360. even tough your oppinion may differ, there is no need for the hate the game gets, because it deserves much much better...SolidTy

You're obviously young. There was a TON of HATE for the original Halo, and ESPECIALLY HALO 2. In retrospect, they are considered better games than HALO 3, sure, but they had HATE as well.

HALO 3 failed to evolve in the same large leaps and bounds many 360 users expected. Heck, with COD4, Battlefield, and other games stealing ONLINE HALO players, it is evident HALO 3's Online community isn't as strong as Halo 2's, but maybe that's just me.

You're obviously making assumptions about people

I've said before that i'm a big UT2k4 fan. I hated UT3 though, even though when it first came out i was telling everyone to give it a chance. I was wrong. It's not a great game at all.

UT2k4 is fast and intense, however. Halo is not. Halo 3 in particular is about firefights, not blinding round a corner and popping someone's head.

I was definitely disappointed in the singleplayer. Halo 2 was my first Halo game, and I went into that with pretty low SP expectations, because I just wanted the online multiplayer. And its singleplayer wasn't that good, and the online MP was fantastic.

With Halo 3, I expected things to be different. And while they were different, and it was probably better than Halo 2, I was hoping for something even greater than that, and I didn't get it. Oh well.

But it's far from a failure, because the online multiplayer is even better than Halo 2's was, both in terms of how it plays and in the featureset. Lessening the focus on dual-wielding brings out the best in the combat, and I've seen some fantastic gametypes and such, thanks to the very mutable custom game rules, and the power of Forge to make good tweaks to maps. Rocket Race is a fantastic game variant.

Also, Halo 3 plays nothing like UT04. They could hardly be more different.

Miranda is hardly a pivotal character. I dont know why you're singling her out. She's got a lot more to her than Nathan Hale, though. And if you didnt feel the slightest bit of emotion when she died, you either simply arent paying nearly enough attention, or are expecting oscar winning drama from a videogame.

It was also quite an emotional moment when Johnson died, as well as the ending where Chief had to hold on for dear life.

I didn't play it much. Haven't touched it since I geat it for the 4th time back in December. Partially because my 360 RROD's and it took them 2 months to get it back to me. I only recently started playing my 360 again.

The level design was pretty compact to me, even when it was open space it felt longer than wider.... I just could not see what was great about it. Doing everything okay may be good enough for some but for me that kind of game (which doesn't introduce anything more than new guns and new grenades plus equipment) just doesn't cut it any more.

I think another core issue here is that most of Halos original simplicity was lost. You have like 4 types of grenades, and in multiplayer nobody really appreciates this, they just spam them. Like for example, I first played the beta and thought "well... it looks awful but no doubt they will improve that" (which they did, slightly, and only for single player), then I saw the spike grenades.... they don't do anything that plasma grenades don't already do, but just have a smaller radius.

So I established that 1 button grenade use + 8 total grenades = bad design.

The idea is simplicity and they lost that, and then they lost the decent maps for multiplayer. The new ones in Halo 3 were awful.

actually you can't close-up stick with a plasma grenade without blowing yourself up and spike grenades rip vehicles apart. incendiarys don;t aooear in matchmaking

The game was great, but my only grief is that they made the game glitch proof. That was half the fun in Halo 2... Trying to get the Scarab Gun, Super Jumps, Going outside the map, Banshee Catapults... Ahhhh the good old times

completely wrong. this isn't about opinions, it's just wrong. i recently decided to go back to halo 2, just to jog me memory on how it felt like again. i chode the map zanzibar, known as last resort in halo 3, and OH GOD MY EYES: they sky looked as drab as anything, the rock faces were ATROCIOUS, gery with bits of green which looked like plasitcine. same with everything. it was just so terrible. especially since it was ocnsidered one of the greatest lookers when t came out.it hasn'tgot half the crispness, detail, or vibrance of halo 3 at all. never say that again.

Halo 3 isn't anything close to a failure. The single player was fun and had some of the best levels in the entire series: The Storm, The Ark, and The Covenant (although I will say it had the single worst level in the series: Cortana). The multiplayer is a blast and no other console game I've played has had so much customization. Forge is incredible...with Racetracks you can turn Halo 3 into an ATV racing game that's actually pretty darn awesome. Me and my friends were making a map and halfway through decided to just play baseball by putting people on grav lifts and hitting them with radio antennas. It's got more support for user-created content than any other console game. File sharing, so many different gametypes, 4-player co-op.

Some may find aspects of the game disappointing, but you can't argue that it's the most complete single game you can buy.

P.S. Orange Box could be something that could be thrown at my last argument, but it's more 5 games so you get my point.

The core game design idea is there - weapons, death match and whatnot, but at the same time the games are dramatically different in play styles and game design execution

I see game school is doing wonders for you.

Not only has your tone become more.... "cultured" or "learned", I remember it was you that tried to make a point that Halo was just a very slow paced version of UT2k4 :P.

-----

Anyway to the thread in general, in hindsight I don't think it's a failure, commercially or critically. It's just that people expected the Second Coming instead of a sequel.

lol did I? damn, just a little embarrassing. :P Though i'd say just playing more games and trying to understand what you are playing better are resulting in a better attitude. Thanks for the compliments :) Though also learning Unreal Editor right now at uni, modding it, and previously NWN2 have been eye openers.

As for the thread in general, I agree. Alot of the opinion surrounding it, including my own is influenced by what was expected.

Yep.

They hyped it up and failed to deliver on every point.

Single player was horrible. Story sucked, horrible ending, HORRIBLE FACES, poor graphics
Multiplayer was nothing special. Horrible ranking system. Atrocious betrayal system.

Exaggeration much? I don't think you made one accurate point there, well done.

No even though I am a PC only gamer, I say it is one of my favorite games of all time, better than Crysis, COD4, and about equal to CS quality.
