Is it a wrap for Sony in Japan?

I mean its literally getting crushed in Japan. Last week it got outsold almost 7:1 :(

The PS3's big guns aren't coming out until 08. I'm talking FFXIII and MGS4 (unless dates have been changed) By this time the Wii at this pace will have a very large lead. Lets look at it this way. At the current rate things are going the Wii is completly obliterating the PS3 in Japan. Even if the PS3 sales start to beat out the Wii on a weekly basis does it seriously have a chance to turn the tides by at one point outselling the Wii at the same margin its been being outsold by right now? If the PS3 continues to be outsold by margines of 5:1, 6:1, 7:1 its not going to beat out the Wii if it turns out to start outselling the Wii 2:1, 3:1 ect. Its going to have to convincingly beat it. How is the PS3 supposed to accomplish this against the Wii and its mass demographic appeal?

I just can't see PS3/360 even touching the Wii in Japan now. Japan has become Nintendoland.

Well, my take on it is that their are 33% HDTV's in Japan, all Sony has to do is get compelling HD Content and bam, they are back in....not to mention strong Online gaming console.

M$ is doing actually a ton worse that SONY is Japan, so Sony knowing that is going to help them maintain a strong second.

I can say that even if they don't conquer Japan, due to the Wii, Game Developers are going to gravitate to the PS3 once they have had their fun with the Wii, as it will be a completely different machine.

All Sony has to do is capatalize on Nintendo's Weakness' and get the price down. 

One other good thing for Sony, is BLU-RAY is the only major HD format out there.

Although you make a lot of since, I can't see that weighing the Wii down much, if for nothing other than the fact that it's marketing and popularity is insane. I don't see how Sony or MS can steal a lot of hype away with anything other than major game releases like Halo 3 and MGS.

It hasn't.  He's been saying this for weeks yet no gaming site has reported it.  The FF13 universe and various games are multiplat, yet the main game is still PS3 exclusive.

Doing better than an Xbox platform in Japan is nothing write home about. Even Sega could released a brick with game brick written on it and it would outsell the 360, much less Sony and Nintendo.

They didn't announce FFXIII was multiplat, they announced that FFXIII is going to be a continual series for the next 5-10 years, and that the series is MULTIPLAT.

I do realize that, my point was since the PS3 and Wii philophies are so different and radical, Developers have a completely different alternative when done with Wii games. For Developers like SE that love graphics, the 360 looks more enticing than the Wii for some of their games, however, being that the PS3 is more Dominant, that leaves Sony in a great position as a strong second(In Japan of course.).

The other hurdle, is the Wii is almost in a different category than the 360/PS3, so the Wii outselling the PS3 doesn't necessarily hurt the PS3 yet.

What's even exciting about a spinoff?
What FF spinoff has actually been a major success for ANY console?

I don't know. I stop playing RPGs after Vagrant Story. However, I will buy FFXIII because it reminds me alot of FFVII.

I agree leaving DQ series on a hand-held is not going to happen. Wishful thinking. 

Indeed. But they have to do something right ? Maybe instead they could get Mistwalker to make a couple of rpgs for them. Blue Dragon and Lost Oyssey would have been system sellers on the ps3. Curse you Microsoft. :P

I see no reason why Mistwalker couldn't make a new JRPG for Sony. They are a completely independant developer. MS just happens to be publishing two of their games. The only problem is it probably won't be for sometime as MS in monopolising most of their resources for the forseeable future.

I believe they are making a DS game though.

The problem the PS3 has is that the big name titles for Japan still seem to be a long way away. And be the time they do arrive and PS3 sales improve development resource from the big Japanese publishers may have already been refocused on to the likes of the DS and Wii.

Perhaps...I am basing this on Gaming history, and although Handhelds are on the rise, I don't see SE artists, etc. being content on the hardware. It will be interesting to see if what you say about the DS being a monstrosity is true. Either you are overstating Handhelds role for the future, or you are right, and Consoles are dying.

They said the WHOLE series goes multiplatform, meaning FF13 on 360, there is nothing to debate here, and while the rumor is around the net for a month now, Sony or Square did not come say it is not, so it is clearly coming

Of course you could be right, and the multiplatform was refering ONLY to the other titles in the series, BUT they never said anything like that, soi could be wrong but so could you, and i be right

No DQ game has ever been at the cutting edge of graphics. I also think you give to much power to the creative people and not enough to the money men. Unless your name is Kojima you in large part have to do what you are told.

We are only talking about Japan here and there is no reason to presume that a handheld becoming the dominant player means that consoles are dying.

I really don't think you appreciate the gaming situation in Japan. DS is a monstrosity and not thought of as lesser to anything.

Perhaps...I am basing this on Gaming history, and although Handhelds are on the rise, I don't see SE artists, etc. being content on the hardware. It will be interesting to see if what you say about the DS being a monstrosity is true. Either you are overstating Handhelds role for the future, or you are right, and Consoles are dying.

What? of course he's overstating it. Handhelds always been popular in Japan. Gameboy: Pocket, Color, Mini, Pokemon. DQ 10 will be on a console. DQ 9 will be on a console too once SE knows which console to port it to. If main RPGs would've switch to handhelds, it would've done it a long time ago.

The DS is so much more popular in Japan than any system ever. The main RPG has already switched to handheld it's there. DQIX is a DS game. I fail to see why there will be a miraculous turn around in a few years time.
