As has been pointed out you don't need a high end PC to play games in 1080p res at 60fps. 600/700 dollars max to achieve this, a bit more expensive than a console but more than worth it. Better looking games, guaranteed 60fps on every game, no online fees and games can be cheaper if you look around or wait for a Steam sale.

People bleating on about high end all the time are talking about gaming in 4K and yes that's very expensive but a great 1080p experience on PC is easily attainable and nowhere near as expensive as you might think.

Answer me please :)

You don't need a 1080 or an i7CPU, nor do you need a 4k monitor. Consoles can't even do 1080p right and you're crying about 4k? Also if you can't afford 80 bucks for some quality 16GB ram, then I wonder how you even afford console gaming.

You don't need top-end equipment to game on PC. You, with a little effort, can build something that wipes the floor with consoles for $100-200 more than them.

I bought a notebook back in January 2013 for $600 CAD. It maxed out almost everything I played on it (that was "made for AMD", medium to high for everything else, and medium for hardware intensive stuff like Total War) until this past year. DmC and DEHR run flawlessly on it (both "made for AMD" games) and plenty of other games are not only playable, but perform quite well.

It doesn't do so well anymore (it's getting really old hardware wise now and it doesn't really like CryEngine all that much) but it has more than served it's purpose, and I was able to take my gaming rig on the road with me for work.

And let's not forget that PC's do so much more than just play games. That few hundred extra dollars you spend is more than worth it. Do yourself a favour and put some time into researching PC hardware, you might be surprised just how affordable it really is. And tell me this, you are comfortable spending $400 every few years for a new console? Because that's what it's going to be now.

A nifty PC doesn't cost that much. Especially if you are willing to go into the 2nd hand market - a lot of people who always like the best and latest will switch to newer cards while selling their older cards at a huge discount. For example, since the release of 1080 & 1070, 970s have become a lot cheaper to get through the 2nd hand market. A lot of PC accessories can also last a very long time. Despite all my upgrades over the past years, I believe I've been using the same set of 5.1 speakers for over 6 years.

On the other hand, if you want the best and the latest, it's only natural to expect a huge premium. For example, Titan is significantly significantly more expensive than 1080, but not significantly more powerful, and the same can be said for 1080 to 1070. Component prices tend to multiply if you want your PC to reach those last few percentages of maximum possible performance. Most gamers tend to realise how unworthwhile that is for gaming purposes and don't really go there, unless they are loaded then they can spend their money however they like on expensive PCs or Ferrari.

A lot of the stuff you put into your build really isn't necessary. While they do provide a powerful gaming experience, you dont need that power to enjoy your PC games. I bought an 1070, and I can max every single game I have played so far.

Well i got my Xbox one about 8 years after my 360. So personal experience? My 360 also still works so i could have held off longer if i liked. There isnt really a point in buying most consoles right when they release. Not this gen at least. Only games they had were ports of black flag and COD.

It has been proven over and over again that PC gaming, overall, is far cheaper than console gaming.

Up front, an average gaming machine might cost anywhere between $700-$900 (even cheaper if you are just trying to match console specs). Just on game sales alone you have access to far more games at a cheaper price..........AND every PC game ever made.

PC gaming is cheaper and far better and more flexible.

Just get a decent i7 like the 6700K (or if you can get a 4790K really cheap and save some, it's almost as good) a gtx 1070, 16GB ram, a decent mobo, psu and case and some good gaming peripherals. And you'll have a gaming experience that's substantially better than the one you get on the consoles. The gameplay is much more responsive, accurate and smooth, without that 30fps jitter during fast movements that most console games have. Better graphics, mods, more control options etc is just more icing on the cake.

I would opt for a 1440p screen if you want to hold the price down, it's fine for most and a gtx 1070 has plenty of power to get high frame rates at that resolution.

8-10 years? PS4 came out in 2013. Neo is coming out next year. That's 4 years.

And the Neo will still be well behind PC in terms of hardware power for equivalent cost.

A majority of PS4 gamers arent going to buy the Neo unless it has some significant differences. You cannot count the half gen consoles that dont change much. Thats like counting the slims as entirely different consoles even though they play the exact same titles. The neo and the Xbox one s arent necessary to continue playing this gen's games.

Can I borrow your crystal ball? There are tons of people who bought a PS4 based on Sony's marketing alone. If they sell the Neo well enough, they will adopt it as well.

Guaranteed 60fps in all games is not a significant difference? Also, 4K bluray player and better performance for PSVR. None if it might appeal to you personally but ALL of it is 'significant'.

If you buy 3 consoles (and even then you don't get close to the library of a PC), pay for online for them for a gen, buy a TV (as you want to scratch buy a PC lets do the same), spare controllers, a cabinet to house the consoles and put the TV on, buy the much more expensive but less extensive library to play, how much does that cost vs a top line PC?

Is not matter. Always you who is exagirate the PC. Good PC for game be 3000 dollrz. Stop hyding on PC, lem

Yeah it is expensive. I'm looking into building a new one and I'm looking at about 2 grand just for the tower. You can build one that is easily more powerful than a PS4 or XBone that doesn't cost as much though.

Console Online: $50 a year.

Console System: $400-500 every 3 years.

So $550-650 every three years. That is $1300 every 6 years (an average gen).

For ~1300 you can build a much better PC and have way more/better games, save $100's on game sales, better online, better BC, actual competitive gaming, mods, every W10 exclusive, and still the best version of 99% of titles for those 6 years.

It is very expensive but also very rewarding. Up until now there is only one game which can justify spending such amounts and that game is THE WITCHER 3, the next time I upgrade it will be a $6000-10000 setup to experience Cyberpunk 2077 to the fullest...

PC gaming isn't about the high end. But if you chase that, it's always going to be expensive going after those luxury parts.

But you can game very well on an i5 and GTX 1060.

PC is about scalability and choice. You get what you pay for. You can spend a lot of money and have a beast rig, or you can buy something more affordable. With consoles... you are stuck with whatever shit hardware they give you. You have to suffer 30fps and lower whether you want to or not.

No, not really, only if you are a poor bloke living on welfare checks, in other words, half of all of console gamers out there while the other half are mainly spoiled children who got their consoles from their horrible parents.

The state of PC gaming....or gaming in general you don't need a GTX 1080 and an i7 6950K to run games at 1080p.

4K is nice....but it's not like 1080p looks bad by any means.

Pc gamers really have to stretch to justify the costs, considering there are multiple people in the thread counting SLIM and half gen consoles are brand new systems that you have to buy.

It depends on what you want to use the PC for in the first place.

It can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be.

Unless you're an enthusiast, I don't see why you want to get a 1080 gtx. I game on medium/high using a 250€ card.

The money I spend more to build a Pc are heavily compensated by the deals on games at 5/10 € each for instance; so I get to afford to play more games on Pc than on console, which are usually more expensive.

Other than that, it all comes down to exclusives. I'm a Nintendo fan, so I bought the Wii U to play some exclusives, but other than that, I'm always playing on Pc.

An RX480 also runs circles around current consoles.

The GTX 750ti is about the same as the consoles (actually performs a bit better) which costs about $100

Well, when you compare the very best of PC gaming to the shit that console gaming is, then yeah, it's gonna be expensive.

Please, use some common fucking sense.

Well i didnt say its common. But technically yes. Xbox has had good to great months every month for around 2 years now. So its pretty worth it. You could buy the console, buy live, and then never buy a game all year if you couldnt afford them. That doesnt negate the wrong prices he had

The prices I had were pretty damn accurate. I was even generous by averaging the price of a new console game at 50$ considering a new console game is 59$+tx which is closer to 65$. Also, by researching properly you could likely shave off a good 100 to 150$ on the 1,000$ build I mentioned.

Also you don't own these games on Xbox Live nor PSN. You're forced to keep paying the subscription if you wanna keep playing them. They don't count. They are a nice perk but I'd rather buy AC2 at 5-10$ once rather than renting it through Games with Gold.

Most people dont buy games at full price. You have to be either foolish, or really hyped for a game to do that. Thats a fact.

And funny you mention AC2, because you actually can keep your 360 games even if you cancel live. And the Xbox One games will always be there if you renew. So you technically own the 360 games 100%. And the One games will always be on your live account.

So that adds up to 24 games you still fully own and can play no matter what.

@jak42 said:

Seems we have some people with personal issues here, inflating prices of consoles and their online services. And acting like consoles games don't get big sales (outside of Nintendo). Instead of finding other means to justify a PC purchase in a fair and legitimate way. By not trying to mislead uninformed individuals.

The most I've spend on a console game this gen is $40. And that was for a new Day One edition of MGSV with the DLC code intact, and NBA 2k16. My next expensive purchase is Destiny and its first three expansions at around $30 dollars. Everything else I have, was purchased below $20, including taxes and shipping costs for physical copies (PSN is tax free for me).

This is a rather big issue on here from what i can tell. Its as if PC gamers dont actually have any idea how much things cost. You can easily go spend 300 bucks on the Xbox One S 500 gb model and have the optimal console experience at the current moment. And the games are almost always cheaper than the day one price if you can wait a week to play something. And if you cant, it must be worth the extra money to you.

And of course they always try to bring down the price for a year of online. As if 5 dollars a month is insane for the amount of content you receive.

Not even counting the sales on consoles, which are usually pretty decent. I think we had witcher 3 with all dlc recently for like 40 bucks. Thats one of the best deals ive ever heard of, considering the DLC itself is 30 dollars.

Man, I never thought I'd see the day where people defend renting games. "You don't get to play them unless you keep paying, but it's okay, because they will always be there! You just have to pay to play them."

My god...

A1080 maximized rig is like what the ps6 is going to be so of course the best gear makes a costly PC. My 1070 system destroys consoles in every aspect except cost but I knew that and didn't care ,I get 1080p and 120fps on most games.

@DragonfireXZ95: I wasnt defending it, just saying that its not like they disappear or anything. And again, you can play the 360 games whenever you want. Thats still 24 games a year.

Gaming PC = consoles(s) + non-gaming PC/laptop. It evens out to me.

How long you gotta wait for games on consoles to drop below 20$? Don't tell me a month or I'll call bullshit. You gotta wait ages to get games under 20$ on consoles. Fallout 4 cannot be found under 30$ on PS4 at the moment and it has been out for almost an entire year.

Consoles games aren't as cheap as you make them out to be for one simple reason, unlike PC their digital market doesn't count for 95% of their sales so brick and mortar stores are still very relevant and have a huge impact on the price. If you've never bought anything for less than 20$ than you're probably buying games 2-3 years after they've come out.

Link me where I can buy console games for below 20$. Good games. Not trash released 5 years ago.

Weird.... http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR12.TRC2.A0.H0.Xfallout+4.TRS0&_nkw=fallout+4&_sacat=0

But besides the exact game you mentioned, there are plenty of cheap console games.

@Juub1990: Its ebay. Tax is not a factor. And you could best offer and likely get it as low as 20 or 22.

It is very expensive but also very rewarding. Up until now there is only one game which can justify spending such amounts and that game is THE WITCHER 3, the next time I upgrade it will be a $6000-10000 setup to experience Cyberpunk 2077 to the fullest...

Are you crazy? :(

@drrollinstein: Huh yeah taxes are a factor especially on imported items which are fairly common.

I elected to reserve my personal judgment until ps5/Whatever XBoxTwo will be, most likely the same as Windows 10 being the last official iteration. If the upgrade model continues, I dont see the difference unless Sonys ps5 will be a fully functional computer coupled with an O.S that isn't Linux. The cost would put off most developers. Further more, ahh **** it.

If they continue to just upgrade. I see no reason not to invest in a PC over a console. Yeah exclusives I guess, but seeing lack in that department already... Well you know there's always Nintendo, bleak as that might sound, currently being the company that wont fold into this "lets fucken make everything unified, and slap our brand name on it" (board room of mostly Asian, and white people laughing in unison railing lines of cocaine while hookers meekly giggle out of fear one of them has a erotic asphyxiation fetish.....bit far, but you get it, they no longer care.)

I'm still waiting until next Gen, I'm happy with a ps4, and desktop which can run most games on high at 60fps (1080p)

Work wise, the mac is beastly.

@Juub1990: But it isnt a factor on most of those copies of fallout 4 that are under 30 dollars.

This has become really off topic lol.
