the way i see it is the story, presentation and atmosphere were perfect and the gameplay was a solid "great" - also, it was engaging

for me, it was one of the best games i've ever played - but then again, i'm a sucker for a good story/atmosphere

to me it was WAY overrated, mostly because I playied SS2 when that came out, and playing Bioshock kinda feels like im playing a version of SS2 for retarted people...

To be fair tho, I can see why people like it, I just dont.

And the "art deco" did not really grab me at all, unlike SS2 it did not feel myself being sucked into the game, become a part of the world, I pretty much just walked through it all venting anything comming near...

So... I came in with expectations way too high, People who never did play SS2 might like it a whole lot more then I did.

I just thought it was poorly executed, great ideas, but in thier attempt to appeal to everyone It kinda failed to appeal to anyone (this is not really true since alot of people like it, just not any person I know IRL).

it is not just Bioshock that has tryied to appeal to a broad audience tho, I think the reason why most games this gen, somehow all are forgettable, is because they try to make everyone like it, and ending up spreading it so thing, and discarding areas that some groups of players would not like.

I wish they would simply say "this game is ment for this kind of people" and then follow it though, instead of saying "this game is ment for all groups of people to figure out and enjoy" thus making it utterly anomonus.

I think the game is pretty damn good, perhaps a little bit overrated, but if anything, not by much.

Bioshock is a First Person Shooter. I loved the game, the story & atmosphere kept me engaged throughout the enitre campagin, & I can't say I didn't enjoy the action either.

One of the most overrated games this gen imo, but if you dig the artstyle and setting I can see why people would like it, I just thought it was lame.

It was good, but a lot of its punch was softened if you had played System Shock 2.

I think it's one of the best games this generation. It's my personal favorite. No other game comes close in terms of the narrative (don't start with MGS4, that's not an exceptional story, just an exceptionally well told one), the atmosphere, the setting, the gameplay... all top notch.

It was like a movie, amazing atmosphere, creepy cool graphics, and the abilities you use with plasmids make it much more than a standard op first person shooter. It was AAA all the way for me, gems like this dont release every month.

Bioshock is overrated as a game, yes. It does many things amazingly, I don't think anyone doubt that. The sound, the atmosphere, presentation, all great and deserve the respect.

However there are major issues with the gameplay, those silly mazes that interrupt what the game does well. They are repeative and boring and should have been removed from the game completely because they don't add anything, just clicking on stuff to hack them would have been much much more effective. As well as the easy-mode rez tanks that make the hard mode easy as pie, I personally started to play it differently by continuing via save game rather then respawn again and again while slowly killing big daddies.

As a whole work of art, Bioshock has major flaws. If they fixed those major flaws then it could have been one of the greatest games ever, but they didn't, which is sad since it really could have been great. The greatest games don't have really good aspects and really bad aspects, they are paced perfectly (hence don't have flaws like Bioshock), some of the greatest games don't even have to have new aspects that change gaming... No they just have an amazing amount of polish, and that is where Bioshock falls short.

It was a decent game, yeah it's overrated. The gameplay itself is pretty blah, the only thing that kept me going was the story and presentation. After beating it once though, I couldn't play through it again. I tried, but I just couldn't do it. The gameplay is just so subpar.

Bioshock was one of the best games I've played in recent memory by all accounts. However, It's a game that like Half Life 2, recieved critical acclaim for many reasons, especially story, and also like HL2, is considered overratted by a good number of people. Why? I don'y know. Both deserved their acclaim, despite the apparent lack of "revolutionary" content.

play it on impossible (only the ps3 version has this difficulty) and turn vita chambers off, and you will see how every weapon in the game has to be utilized, and really you can play the entire game without hacking anything if you choose so i dont see the real complaint there

It makes it much less mindless, yep. Back when it first come out, mods were being released to make the game significantly harder, good to see it was incorporated in the PS3 version, gives it a System Shock 2 feel.

No, HL2 was criticised for the story. I think even the Gamespot reviews mentions it's disappointing. Only fanboys praise it, mostly because they can't make the difference between backstory and story.

HL2 was revolutionary.

BioShock is mediocre, but it has one advantage: when somebody says the RPG elements are mediocre, fans respond that it's a shooter. When the crap shooting mechanics are criticised, fans say it's a RPG.

The self-indulgent story is a bastardisation of SS2's story. Ken Levine must laugh his ass off when he reads such nonsense as "the game is a parable of your motivation and mannerisms as a gamer, doing what you're told without questioning the reasons" and so on...

Both HL2 and Bioshock excell at presentation more than actual story...

Anyway, what's so crap about Bio's shooting mechanics? Seemed fine when I played it (admitted it was quite a while ago, at the games release on the 360).

no game can be overrated, it's nothing more than a clash of opinions. What may seem overrated to you may seem underrated to others, I feel it's time to throw the whole "overrated" thing out of the window as it doesn't make any sense.

It was so boring, it had an amazing atmosphere, but the gunplay was weak and unsatisfying, the hacking minigames made me want to gouge my own eyes out, the Big Daddy fights were just irritating. Just nothing about it drew me in. I am going to try Bioshock 2 though, hopefully that can keep my attention.

JangoWuzHere

I agree with many of these points, but for me at least, they never detracted from my overall enjoyment of the game. I've yet to find a game that matches the quality of Bioshock's setting, art direction, and atmosphere (maybe the Resident Evil Remake), and that's what I love about it most.

The RPG elements come in as you slowlybuild upyour character with plasmids, tonics, and weapon upgrades. The weapons you complained about are pretty secondary to the plasmids themselves, and the fact that you can't actually equip all of the plasmids (and must therefore pick and choose for yourself) adds a ton of customization to the game. On the surface, the combat seems pretty cut-and-dry, but when you consider all the options the game gives you for offense/defense, it is actually pretty deep.

As for the game being linear, I partially disagree. It's true that the game itself deliberately funnels you through the story on a specific route, but part of the fun of the game is exploring. You'll miss a TON of stuff if you just follow the arrow from beginning to end.

Anyway, I don't think Bioshock is "teh bEsT gAeM EVAR!!!!!" but I thought it was quite good, and definitely deserving of the praise it received.

i know what you mean...its a good shooter with everything done the way it is supposed to be..but to me nothing stands out

another thing that i have the same feeling about is the ending of mass effect...it just felt like a tipical task (like the rachni for example), but both are getting sequels and i expect improvement in story and tweaking in some features
