It was the ending that killed it for me. Most underwhelming final boss ever. Then again I just finished Prototype, but I wasn't really expecting anything big like in Bioshock. Also the fact that I finished it in like 5 hours on Hard was kinda lame.

Eh, I kind of have to agree. I thought the game was enjoyable enough I just didn't think it was all that special. I guess the atmosphere just didn't do it for me. I really don't see how the atmosphere can be compared to the original metroid primes because to me it dosen't hold a candle stick to it. just my 2 cents on that.
Why does everything have to be overrated just because certain people don't like it?
heretrix
This one is. It's a fact that it's just a dumbed down System Shock, yet most gaming journalists say it has better gameplay. That is overrating, because less isn't more.
It was good, but a lot of its punch was softened if you had played System Shock 2.Danm_999Agreed. Most people who have played SS2 will find Bioshock boring. I don't get why the game got insane amount of hype from the gaming press before and after it's release.

Sometimes it is, if it's streamlined. I loved SS2 but I really dug Bioshock also and so did a hell of a lot of other people. What I said stands. YOU don't think it's all that great, but most people do. Therefore it isn't overrated.[QUOTE="froidnite"] I don't get why the game got insane amount of hype from the gaming press before and after it's release.IronBassBecause it is awesome :o Agreed. Best game of the gen. Way better than Contra 4. :P

It's extremely overrated, but kids these days haven't played better games.funked_upI have been playing games since about I was born. Started on the Intellivision. Wanna do the condescending thing again as a do over?

yea it is overrated, i personnaly think it qas a mediocre experience, the graphics where nice though
It's my favorite game so far this generation and a FPS hasn't held that title with me since the N64 days. I love the easy pick-up and play solid gameplay, the concept was brilliant, the voice work was top notch, the graphics/art direction was amazing and the environment was incredibly immersive. It's very far from being overrated to me.
is it just me or does this subject come up about every big game at @ 12-26 months after it comes out?
@ release everyone drooled over it and later guess what...your standards have changed...it entertains me that people think it's the world and how it works that has changed while being oblivious to what's going on with themselves...
It was the presentation that everyone loves about it. The insanity of the people you incounter and the world your in and it really puts you in the game but also keeps in on a steady track. The tapes give life to the city and help make it seem like the city wasnt always the crazy mess it was. It's an enjoyable ride with lots of just ok things put togeather and presented very nicely
Compare Bioshock to everything else in 07. It was pure gold. The only game that I think beats it in atmosphere is Dead Space.(which I like more)
The thing that killed Bioshock for me was its presentation. It was all so cheesy. The voice acting was just unconvincing and overdramatic. And the suspension of disbelief was broken at best.
Let me explain:
Okay, so my plane crashes, and I swim to a strange lighthouse thing in the middle of the ocean to get help. I travel down an evevator. This is all believable so far. But then, when my character finds a syringe with an almost radioactive looking liquid inside of it and proceeds to inject it in his arm without a care in the world, that was when I realized that the suspension of disbelief was broken. No one in their right minds would ever do that. Yes, I can forgive the hyper-linear levels that make up the so called "city" (more like a path, if you ask me). But when you attack the suspension of disbelief, that's when I object.
Another example:
When listening to the audio logs and you hear the guy get attacked, I found that the SOd was broken too. The mental image of the attacking is hilarious. A guy is talking into a microphone. Then he starts being attacked. Now, a perfectly normal person would drop the recorder and run the **** away. Not this guy. As he was being killed, he proceeded to lean into the recorder and scream (unconvincingly) into it. He started a recording, by golly, he was going to finish it!
The enitre world was ruined by the wretched presentation. I almost feel personally insulted (as rediculous as that sounds) for the horrid execution of genius ideas.
Because it's all about realism isn't it? Yes it's ridiculous he injected himself with that, me and some of my friens made fun of it but so what? The plasmids were more fun to use than most abilities in other FPS games around that time. The thing that killed Bioshock for me was its presentation. It was all so cheesy. My list of games that were overhyped for this gen: Mass Effect (I was sooooooooooo looking forward to this and was severely let down, so I'll have it a number 1), Bioshock (awesome game, but not as good as everyone was telling me it was), Killzone 2 (Even the graphics were just so....grey? good for one playthrough for me), GTA 4 (Just could'nt force myself to finish it, though TBH the only other GTA I've made it through is VIce City.), and Smash Brosh Brawl (Felt just like the original on the n64).

It's not at all about realism. It's about the suspension of disbelief. It's about making the player willing to believe he or she is a part of the game world, IE "immersion." Bioshock had a genius premise. But a genius premise is NOTHING without the suspension of disbelief. If the game does not effectively convince me the world is worth believing in, then the game wont leave any impact on me, other than making me roll my eyes. And that is why I hate Bioshock.

How about playing with that premise for fun? I don't have to feel convinced in order to simply enjoy that. How about playing with that premise for fun? And we were promised interview after interview the pie in the sky. We were promised an immersive world. In fact, people often cite the WORLD as one of the best parts of the game. So don't tell me that, oh SOD is not important. No, it's probably the most important aspect of a game like Bioshock. If I want fun, I'll play TF2. I'll play Wii Sports. I was promised an experience in Bioshock and I was lied to. I hate Bioshock. It is the epitome of everything I hate in gaming.
BioShock is ace. If you dislike it, then you dislike a fantastic game. Simple as that. I dislike many fantastic games, and I try so hard to flaw them up so my tastes seem like they're the definitive truth.

it says on the back of the box you will be genetically altering your dna with injected plasmids. did you not gather from that that the game might not be entirely realistic? seems a bizarre way of judging a game, by that logic you wont like the majority of games out there

The game does not have to be realistic at all. It just has to be convincing. Big difference.
Its just you. Bioshock may not be that heavily influenced on the rpgs elements, but it still has rpg elements in it. If you look a regular shooter compared to Bioshock, it looks like a regular JRPG. You have the choice to use plasmids and your wrench, or guns, or invest in hacking and physical tonics or anything there are huge amount of choices. If hacking is boring you, then shoot the hell out of turrets and cameras. and if you dont wanna hack combo locks then find the combination it willmake you feel the depth in story even more. Saying there is no rpg elements, were you playing a different game? As i said there arent many rpg elements but to say there are none you must have been blind whilst playing. There is a lot of choice and its a great game you just really need to get involved. but thats my opinion anyway.

ok fair enough but how convincing the introduction of the plasmids to the player was seems like such an insignificant detail to nit pick over when the rest of rapture was so convincingly portrayed through the wonderful art style and presentation

The rest? There ware a lot of problems with its presentation that hindered the experience for me. I gave another example of one. Here's more. Less than stellar acting. Bad level design. Terrible animation. Shallow gunplay. Gimmicky hacking system. The fact you can get all the plasmids wothout ever having to worry. These things on their own I can forgive, but all in one package? No way. If you can forgive them, great, good for you... I am glad the 60 dollars you spent on this game did not go wasted.
And with the plasmids, they could have offered the player a choice. Perhaps one would not inject a foreign liquid into his or her veins until he or she realized it's the only way to survive... having the player reach that point is much more convincing than reaching it for them.
